im sure all these people against the darker diablo theme are all wow fans. and are probably clueless to that amazing dark mid evil/ lone wanderer feeling of diablo that makes it addictive and re playable.

What made it addictive was the loot and story, not if a statue was happy or not, but I guess you wouldn't understand that.

What does liking WoW have to do with anything? Just cause I like Wow doesn't mean I want all games to look like it.

Then you won't mind if they improve graphics towards realism.:)

They havent even said making it more "gothic/dark/detailed" would make it look any worse.
yep, we just want improvement.
No one said Diablo 3 is complete garbage.
I like fluid animations, spells, skills, familiar monsters, huge bosses, etc.
But the graphics still need improvement. They look like something from 2002 FFS.

No. We people are most like the reasonable people that think the game is not finished yet. Looking at the HD version of the gameplay trailer I could see many of the graphics are very fuzzy and surely not finished yet. If it is 1-2 years to release I bet they didn't put up the final version of the graphics to the game yet just to remake them closer to release since it being already a bit outdated. So I'm pretty sure it will change.
If not I think they should improve it a bit since some parts looked like too smooth.. the grass outdoors was really undetailed.. when I watched these things it really felt like they weren't finished yet.
Sorry but Diablo 3 looks just like World of Warcraft, the art style is the same and they really need to change that, all the Blizzard games are turning to a cartoonish art style, that just cant happen in this one, it's not right.
So why did you close the poll?
Seems a little premature, or did you get the result you wanted?

yes, you're right, textures are smooth.
Have you seen WoW textures? I don't think i need to post more pics, just read the thread.
WoW textures have always been hand-painted/cartoony or "smooth"
One of the developers even said "there's plenty of room for both WoW and Diablo".

( First post btw, but I'm a hardcore Diablo fan )
You make a good point Ultra. A really good point. Diablo2 had amazing graphics, both dark and realistic. I would go so far as to say some of the best graphics ever made for any game. First of all, since most of you wanted 3D, there is just no way you could make as realistic looking of graphics in 3D and have the game run remotely well. Diablo2 was also technically developed by a different studio, who thought independently from the central Blizzard art philosophy. Notice how similar Diablo, StarCraft, and WarCraft all are beginning to look. It's the new "Blizzard" style. Think of Blizzard more like Pixar now, they are a closed-off community, no longer two independent studios ( North and South ). Blizzard is more commercial, they are more generic, trying to be less offensive, and going with something "safe" that is proven to work for a broad audience which guarantess more sales. I'm as sad as you, but think of it as an inevitable change. First of all because the original studio is no longer intact. Secondly because Blizzard is becoming larger and more commercial. It's what happens to all games once the company expands and becomes more corporate. The grittiness disappears. Think of the original C&C (Westwood) as opposed now to the modern C&C (EA). I applaud your efforts, but I doubt they'll do anything to change the style.
To get into the specifics, the backgrounds, as always, look incredibly detailed and overall look really good. But yes, there is too much saturation, not enough darks. Overall, however, the backgrounds look really really good. My main problem is the characters, which you can't do much about and here's why: You can't shadow dynamic characters well in 3D, leaving the character fully lit. This is horrible for a Diablo game. A fully lit character ( enemy or hero ) isn't gothic, it's cartoony. Combine this with low poly counts on the characters, and you get a really cartoony style. Sure, you could change the hue/saturation/contrast to make the backgrounds look more gothic, but the characters are still going to look cartoony. I would guess that this style is also just the result of the limitations of 3D graphics.
The solution to the cartoony character problem would be: Dynamic Ambient Occlusion like in Crysis and higher poly models. This would add tons more lag, and this is against Blizzard's policy of making games that run really well.
This sums up my thoughts on the matter, well said.

everyone know the facts but no one said that the character models of the game should be detailed like ACT games or FTP.
your are losing understanding of what we talking here..the whole thread is talking about the art style..
these armors above its looks so comfortable with a little lighting around the surface of the helmet(scalp?)..no exaggerated no big scrap iron..this is what we taking about..the game should be more realistic..about what?..not about ploygon but art style.
oh,by the way..I think the polygon of Pounder's armors above are less than the grils of my sig bellow..so we gota additional momery for the others just like

DIFFERENT ARTISTS MAKES DIFFERENT GAME!!NEW CLASS of WoW above.
Hey how intense will diablo 3 be on my system because I don't have a gaming computer. Try to compare to some other popular games pls. I'm worried i'll have to spend extra money to play but I have no choice I have to play this game.
But on the topic of art, I like the new diablo look and I suspect it will go through many polishes before it's in our hands. But I always felt the awesomeness of the items in diablo 2 came from there subtle but very noticeable differences and the fact that weren't cartoony nor overly realistic, hopefully the creators will be able to find that same kind of niche in D3. I suspect however that diablo 3 is going to have a lot of items and a large range of looks seeing as how there were so many textures which, require a lot of time and trial and error, in the game play demo. They have shown us peanuts compared to what we'll encounter playing the entire game I just hope it's really fun because when it's all said and done the game can look like a piece of shit but if your going to want to play it every second of everyday who really cares what it looks like.
At first I was defensive on blizzards behalf, I liked the game play trailer and thought it looked good, but now I agree that it is too colorful, it should however not be too heavily drained of color, I'm sure there is a great medium which will look awesome, after looking at the screenshot edits I have to admit the darker ones say Diablo far more than the actuall ones. But some of them look to drained like the one with the chandelier and arch with two statues on each side, the outdoor edits look awesome. I am sure through these complaints Blizzard will find a happy medium, and I know we have only seen 20 minutes of gameplay, but still the color can be greatly improved.

I'm more concerned about the goofy squishy sound effects every time the barbarian killed something. What happened to his powerful aggressive cutting sounds???
I am SO relieved to find that most people on these forums agree with me, that this new Diablo art style and graphics are terrible. Watching that 20 minute preview made me feel like I was watching a WoW battle from a bird's eye view.
