Yes he can, but the sword's damage would only apply for single hand use. I am talking about a tiny little shield that straps to the forearm and both hands are free for whatever weapon.

Those before me shall quiver in my wake as I unleash the fury within!
For another idea for D3:
1. How about different ways of holding your weapon. I don't know if it is on the master list or not. Having your assassin with a sword hold it like my avatar. When you have throwing knives, hold it by the tip of the blade.
2. Have a deadly finisher skill.
3. When you have been in many battles, show cuts on character or trophies attached to your belt.
4. Throw your weapon at monsters then pick it back up. Add extra damage.
5. Chose battle strageties. Conservative in combat, more life and defence. Less damage. Aggressive in combat, Less life and defence, more damage.
6. Sheath swords or carry big weapons on your back when in town.
7. When on the battlefield, if there are any NPC warriors going around killing monsters (like in Act 5) you can command them to stay with you, attack, right flank, go back to town.
8. When you bring in gold to town (when you buy some merchandise) the town has more available weapons and mercs. Town looks better, stronger defense seen at the edge of town.
9. More characters allowing more diversity
10. Hire more than one merc.

Another idea for D3 is there is no end into leveling. You don't stop at level 99. I think if you are able to progress past level 99, you have the power to go past that. If you are Diablo freak (which everyone here is including me) max out your entire skill tree.

1. may be hard to do, the graphics for this exists only for daggers and javelins i think
2. pretty cool.
3. cool but hard to do, characters are very big in diablo, but if the abilty to zoom in was implemented it would be a different story
4. pretty cool, but may be hard to do, i think it may work like the current throwing items, the ones with a stack only the number wouldnt go down, rather than blizzard try do animation for the item returning
5. pretty cool, not too sure how it would work though, as you kinda just click and go.

7. been said only worded slightly different
8. pretty cool idea

one thing that went wrong with d2 1.11 etc is they put too many random things in there.. for example more runewords kinda killed the game..
eventually there were so many runewords that people didnt even know what to make
