Unlike most of you, I have not played D2. Made my way through Titan's Quest and loved it. This said, I was pretty much winging it - didn't have a good handle on which abilities/etc worked best together, didn't have a good sense where I should be putting my level up points (strength, dexterity, etc) and in what ratios. I am really not sure how well my character was built; probably not very.
I'd like to try avoid this for D3 and have a decent plan upfront. But honestly, while I really enjoy these type of games, I don't seem to have much of a head for how to best build up a character.
My style of play is to insert myself into the middle of a horde of bad guys and swing for the sky. So I'd like a build that can dish out the damage, but also can take a beating with the best of them.
Any suggestions on a character build that can meet this criteria and is newbie friendly.
honestly, I'm not sure that I would see my self playing through the game more than once (if that makes any difference), but you never know.
Also any suggestions on where to put skill points (or whatever they are called) and in what amounts would be appreciated.
Well first off, there are not skill/talent points of any kind in D3. I think they felt most people would just plop them into their classes best stat, putting little to know thought into it, so they took them out.
As for a build, the beta is pretty limited as far as the amount of abilities/runes you unlock. It's kind of hard to make a 'good' or 'bad' build.
What I can say from beta experience is that pretty much all of the abilities are amazing. And if the base ability isn't the greatest, there's usually a rune that will make it that way.
You probably won't even have to worry about your build until Hell. Maybe in the later parts of Nightmare, though we cannot know for sure. But by that time, I'm sure there will be a magnitude of build guides out there that will help you refine your own build.
play whatever build "you" feel is right and fun and doing good for you thats a problem in games today there is no bringing yourself into games anymore its all let me look at other ways people play. Honestly play for you bro
Man, good thing about Diablo 3 is that you don't have to worry about build. You can change from build to build in 15 sec. And you will be changing it depending on your gear mostly. If you get good high dmg bow as DH you will pick some high demage skills for it. On the other hand if you get a fast one handed set of xbows you will probably use some lower damage skills which suits fast weapons better. And so on. Don't worry, wait and be happy.
i recommend gamers like you just to play the game, if you find an ability you like and you think its fu*king awesome... use it! the game is made to be played kinda how ever you want. play to have fun!
once you learn more and get more experienced you can start optimizing. but thats really not so important in the start, it will come automatically! when you really stop and think... "hey... what if i use these skills.. then i can use that combo and get more use of this skill" then your on a good track.
The game is built in sutcha way that you get 1 or more skills and runes every level giving you change to test them out and then make your own choices.

edit, adding more about my way of thinking:
I got some ideas of how i might want to built my characters, but who knows? maybe i need more stun skills, less area of effect skills... i don't know! i got an idea that i might follow, but will do whatever feels awesome.
Some good advice. I am glad to hear you can change your build on the fly - takes a lot of the 'stressing' over a build out of play. I will just play and pick what I think is 'cool'. Just a little over a month to go. Ya!
As others noted already, try to use what feels cool, but keep in mind that as you progress into the game, just bashing things as hard as you can will stop working. So try to keep a healthy mix of damage/survivability/control,

Pretty much a newbie here.
