I like it! But I don't think the Battlenet feed is necessary. I'm thinking all that info can be displayed when you enter the chatroom, like it did back in the day.
If you know anything about online chatting, a prominent chat window like this will never, ever happen - especially an unmoderated chat window. Oh the horrors.
This post alone led me to create a acct on Diablofans just to say.. you NAIL IT! Love the idea that this would be the screen everyone boots into. Would love everyone booting into a general chat and going to other channels as they desire.
The look of the chat is spot on and hits on about everything I hear people like.
Saw this linked from the official forums and I felt compelled to come here and show my support. Great job mocking this up...it looks fantastic and would be a welcomed improvement to the antiquated chat system we've been shown in the current patch. I sincerely hope Blizz sees this and takes notice to how much it would be appreciated.
I like it a lot, however it looks a bit cluttered with stuff. Maybe expand the chat aspect and have navigational tabs that take over your screen with the various thing like stats, or w/e and you can switch between the tabs. So everything is organized and on each screen your only focused on one thing. You know what I mean? Like the chat window is mainly focused on the chat aspect, can see peoples characters, expanded friends list, etc.
Somewhere are some tabs with things like stats, etc and you click on one and instead of the chat window you bring up the stats screen where the chat screen is no longer visable, all that is shown is the stats screen. You click on the chat tab and it brings you back to the chat screen. Anything that makes it less cluttered up would be great, still awesome work though.

Really great job man!
Fair enough. But yeah I'm not really caring about specifics like that... we shouldn't have to. Blizz can figure that out
My formatting isn't the best either, and clutter/buttons, centering, etc... I didn't put as much thought as Blizz would, so criticisms are valid haha.
OneTwoSC, would you be willing to try to make a few more iterations based upon the feedback from this forum? I realize it takes up your personal time, but from the feedback that you are receiving here and on the D3 forums, I really think that it might help to convince Blizz. Just a thought. Thanks again for this awesomeness!

Maybe? It's hard to push revisions once the original is already popular. Honestly if I wanted to go further it would have to be a flow chart (if I actually wanted to be serious)... and that would take far too long lol. A lot of the criticism on my design is based on what they're seeing IN that image alone. There's so much I can't convey, like how the chat wouldn't be initially open, but rather it would be manually opened by the user if they wanted. Or how the chat avatars get replaced by party avatars when in a party.
And on top of this it takes a long time to think through what people would want and how to make it look nice. ie a lot of people don't care for the stat window down at the bottom, and I think that's fair... I just threw it there for fun. But what could replace it?
And is there something better than a crude lineup of avatars? Maybe there is, and I'd really have to think that through, so the people shouting 'you're all just nostalgic of D2' crowd can quiet down lol.
Edit: Though I may give it one more try... we'll see.
Really, them using their old system just updated and such with better graphics and more functionality would be a far step above what they did with Starcraft II. Watching a video someone posted on the warcraft III battle.net and discussing the features made me realized that so much has changed I wish they would take a step back.
Sure, make great games, but there is more to it then that. You could share and stream live replays on wcIII/sc, clan support, etc, all things people want with scII, but don't have. I hope they have a better system with their Diablo III battle.net. Would be a shame to ignore such a good service they had back in the day.
I'm no designer but I thought it would be fun to shuffle stuff around and see how a new D3 bnet (once you logged in) could look... I tried to go off of Diablo 2's Bnet.
The chat itself could probably have tabs or whatnot. Also, I imagined that when you join a party or create one, the little 'avatar lineup' at the bottom would switch to your party's avatars (since there isn't much room behind your guy anymore lol). Then you could use the tiny arrow button next to "Monk Chat (1)" (which would say "Party") to switch back to avatars in the chat channel.
Also not really sure what "Leave Chat" would do... maybe or maybe not downsizes chat window, but it would take you out of the channel, leaving you to still type to friends/party.
Edit: V2.0:
Better than Blizzard's current set up. Not just better looking but more user friendly. It also captures that good feeling we get when we get see people's characters and our own and compare and such.
I really like this design. My only real concern would be people playing on a standard resolution instead of a wide screen resolution. The UI would need to be able to support that.
Also, for party, it could probably just use a tabbed view where the chat avatars are. A tabbed interface for channel, party, guild, etc could work.

Great Job.. now hopefully Blizzard will listen.

imo the "main game screen" had a lot of wasted space...this makes much better use of UI real estate

I'm guessing the chat/news side could shrink?
