i found these from beta videos so the totals are for lvl 60.
barbarian
attack (10) +2 every level = 128
precision (9) +1 every level = 68
defense (10) +2 every level = 128
vitality (10) +2 every level = 128
demon hunter
attack(10) +2 every level = 128
precision(11) +2 every level = 129
defense(9) +2 or +1 every other level = 98
vitality(9) +1 or +2 every other level = 97
monk
attack(10) +2 every level = 128
precision(11) +2 every level = 129
defense(10) +2 every level = 128
vitality(9) +1 every level = 68
witch doctor
attack(10) +2 every level = 128
precision(9) +2 every level = 127
defense(9) +2 every level = 127
vitality(10) +1 every level = 69
wizard
attack(10) +2 every level = 128
precision(10) +2 every level = 128
defense(8) +2 or +1 every other level = 98
vitality(9) +1 or +2 every other level = 97
Keep in mind, these numbers are nothing compared to what items will have on 60. Seeing an item on lvl 13 could have an easy 50 attack.
To estimate: Fully equipped with endgame gear the base stats would account for 5-10% of your stats. I wouldn't be surprised if its less.
So these base stats are just 'for show' and do not really differentiate the classes from each other, nor do they add much to the game. I doubt you'll feel more powerful when adding +2 attack each level...

The little boat gently drifted across the pond exactly the way a bowling ball wouldn’t...

I mostly agree with this, I don't think that those stats are high enough to be the majority of the stats you have at high levels. On the other hand though, we don't really know exactly how that's going to balance yet, so the differences between the classes could still wind up making some difference, but there's absolutely no reason to pick a class based on its attribute selection.

I agree with your assessment but it puzzles me why they bothered to include them at all in this case. I realize they basically use D2 as a "what happens if" answer machine - and with stats it pretty much became "minimum here, here and here to do x, y and z and dump the rest here".
With most of the stats stuff coming from gear if you want a wizard with 4000 attack you can go for it - but if it really IS such a small factor by mid game why not just drop stats with levels entirely? There must be some basic accounting reason but it is, for the most part, entirely ignorable from the players perspective.
