I mean, Diablo 2 was a strong, strong departure from Diablo 1. A skill tree, runes, running instead of just walking, etc, these are all things that are hard departures from Diablo 1, but Blizzard North made sure that they still kept a strong tie-in with Diablo 1 through the story and the gameplay as well as the items.
D2 was a massive departure from D1, and it still has lots of detractors who say it never captured the "feel" of D1. If a person were to go back and create a list of differences between the two games as the OP has done with D2->D3, I think the lists would be equally long.
Now the two things cited here as tying D1 and D2 together, story and items, are PERFECT examples of things that will tie D2 and D3 together in exactly the same way.
For the first two games people were largely ignorant or in denial of the Prime Evils and what was really happening in the world. I'm interested to see how people are acting in this game now that it seems people can no longer ignore the reality of the situation.
Devs have stated that the people of sanctuary have largely forgotten about or where never aware of the events of D2 in the first place. I would expect the same or higher levels of ignorance and incredulity from NPC's in comparison with the first games.

What does Diablo 3 share with Diablo 2 then that makes them similar? Trading? Not really. Game play? I don't see it. Skills? Not at all. Only thing I can see that make them similar is the lore and the fact that it's top-down perspective.
Diablo 2 and Torchlight have more in common in my opinion. (Then again, they were made by the same people. )
Imo D3 felt like an sequel before the skill systen and AH change.
Now everything has changed. The game will not be about building characters and collecting items (theres no more builds, only short term strategies, and the game is never about something you can officially get with your wallet).
The game will problably be about getting achievements (the banner thing) and how to strategically pick your skills to defeat certain bosses. This is not bad, too be honest. Achievements tends to be quite challenging and i like strategy more then anything else. But the game will feel more like a Hack n'Slash Guilwars then anything else.
I think we can pretty much rip off the RPG tag of the game. D3 looks like a strategy-action hybrid...
All three are still in the game and all improved upon. This is what makes D3 a Diablo game.
Hack & Slash - New robust AI and deeper combat mechanics
Loot- Moar!! Each class with their own look plus dozens of new affixes, 18 tiers of armor, ...
Randomization - quests, areas, dungeons worth going into

The lore is interesting indeed for D3. For the first two games people were largely ignorant or in denial of the Prime Evils and what was really happening in the world. I'm interested to see how people are acting in this game now that it seems people can no longer ignore the reality of the situation.
Wow nice man +1up i notice this in d1 and 2 but had not conciderd the fact that the overwhleming forces of hell are much more out and about in 3.... intressting.

I'm so tempted to use a lot of time arguing with you, but it's pointless. Mark these words; You will love diablo 3 when it's released, youre just to blind to not see how they have changed something that is artificial and "cheap" into something useful.
