I've have really high standard for music. and also girls (but thats irrelevant for this topic)
The point of this thread is to discuss your current likes and dislikes with Diablo3 sound tracks.
And of course, your own set of interpretation on each track. What do you think is happening in the song? I've always been told that each song has its own message (Of course ones without lyrics, no today is not Friday and I dont want get in the front sit...)
The song gives that "alone" and "no hope" atmosphere in the beginning and suddenly makes me feel as though I'm trying to break through the world of evil, but yet they are still shadowing over my body. The devil is still lingering around me although I do not see any. It can't be killed, and it will never be killed.
This is probably a really good soundtrack for a dungeon scene. Gives a "sewer" feeling to it. Gloomy liquids with heat coming from the ground. Feeling of danger, as if a swarm of demon would suddenly come marching. But yet to have any sign of them.
I tried my best, and again this is just my own interpretation of some soundtracks there are more on the web.
I'd like to hear what kind of message or feeling you might have captured listening. Enjoy!
P.S - Close your eyes when you listen to them. It really makes a world of difference
Yeah you definitely need to close you eyes to envision it.
Overture I feel as if I'm in an epic battle, slowly being weakened by the overwhelming odds, though I keep fighting. The battle pauses as an overwhelmingly powerful and evil force enters the battle and completely decimates my attempts. I retreat, and for a second am out of the battle, well knowing I cannot defeat that force as is. Than, an angelic being arises on my side, equally as powerful, the opposing forces stand off, ready for an epic face off.
Cathedral I'm entering a place which was once beautiful, and now is saturated with evil. I have an objective, so I push on, sensing the evil all around me. I can envision what this place once was, and will never be again.

The atmospheric effect of the music really resonates. I am going to enjoy playing with this music.
In fact, I think I'm going to draw with it lol.
Edit: Wow...umm Listen to this. How freakin' creepy?

It will never be D1... D1 gave me a musical orgasm at 5 years old...
But this is D3 so it can't be the same I suppose:
Isn't Overture the menu theme and was played specifically for the gameplay vid or something? Or is it maybe music that changes according to your environment?
Cathedral felt like I was watching blips of Naga swim through dark waters as I tried my best to sit there invisibly, observing the sunken city in all it's glory, more than like I was in a Cathedral. True that a Flooded Sewer would work well, with a beautifully done scary situation. But it still feels very much like an Aquarium...
Not saying it's like Warcraft with the Naga reference. It's just the first thing I thought of.
Will still be playing with music on though.

It's all been said. The pun, the not so funny joke, the phrase, something about oneself, the not so random picture.

Overture is usually like a medley of the music in the game. As you play the game, you will hear full versions of those various parts. The orchestral stuff I'm guessing will be mainly in cinematics and important story events, with more tradtional Matt Uelmen-style music in dungeons. Laurence Juber, who did some of the Starcraft 2 guitar, is the co-composer focusing on the guitar-heavy Diablo themes.
Here's an excerpt from an interview with Laurence Juber:
Although not a gamer himself, LJ was asked by Blizzard to create original compositions for the upcoming game, Diablo III. “The representative who asked me to play for Blizzard, Russell Brower, is someone I’ve known for at least 25 years. He was familiar with both my guitar playing and my composing ability. With Diablo, the original game was quite guitar driven and the original composer was no longer involved with the game, so he [Brower] was drawn to me because he knew that I was able to handle both the guitar and composition side of it.” He talks about the video game which will be released next year. “They [Diablo compositions] were original songs that captured the ambience of the original game but needed to evolve because video game music has evolved over the last decade to be really orchestrated and more like movie music. The process for me was more like I am painting a picture than as if I’m scoring a movie.” LJ depicts his time spent playing the game. “They introduced me to some of the early versions of the game so I had a sense of what was going on in terms of the characters and the avatars and all of the dynamics of the game. Then I went and created the songs and we revised it and created a whole bunch of music. It was mostly 12 string guitar and orchestra. On a couple of occasions I’ve had the opportunity to perform with an orchestra doing some of this music… Everything else is conceptual, which is part of my approach in general as a musician, which is also true to my approach as a studio musician. Once I understand the concept of the style I can then work within that mode to create something that fits within that framework but still has some of my original sensibility.”
It saddens me a little comparing it to D1. As a last resort I can just play D1 music in the background. Blizzard I know you have your reasoning but the old music was the best game music EVER. The new music is good and all but it's a symphony orchestra compared to the humble creepiness of D1. [/rant]
OT: Nekrodrac, what's your favourite piece from bleach? On the precipice of Defeat always gives me spine tingles. I love anime music.
Diablo 1 music is so much better... I mean is way way better! This overture sounds like WOW... That makes me sad.
You mean it sounds like WoW because it's a full orchestral piece unlike the stripped down scores of Diablo 1? I'd say this sounds more like LoD than WoW.
I'll listen to the background music for a couple playthroughs to see if I like it or not.
If I do, then that makes it a lot better for me, but if I don't, then I'll just throw my own music behind it, leave the special effects volume on, and pretend that the score was never composed in the first place and that it was a bad dream.
So, yeah, I'm indifferent.

I must go back to watching good ol bleach again, minus the filler episodes. Naruto was also good. I could talk about anime for ages but better not derail the thread.
The Diablo 3 music is good, but I think overall Blizzard has really lost their edge for writing awesome music since the old days. Here's the original Tristram theme:
The music starts out calm but melancholy, a depiction of the hard lives of the village townspeople. The chord change at about 10 seconds in gives the listener the first hint of the dark corruption that is to come. All throughout the start of the song, things get bleaker and more evil sounding. It switches between being sad and being ominous. At around 1:12 it kicks in more. Hope hasn't vanished completely, but things are going downhill. Then is slows down again, more sadness. Things become more confused and psychedelic at around 2 minutes in. Different emotions drift in and out, blending together, perhaps representing the onset of insanity, or the sad remembrance of a nice life that is slowly vanishing. Things get a little repetitive for a while, but then at 4 minutes in the song takes a turn again. Here the onset of doom seems much more certain. This part of the song seems like the final acceptance of the trials to come. At 4:53 things really start to get dark. Around 5:10 the song portrays an emotion of being thoroughly worn out and devastated. The song then goes into a phase that sounds much more corrupted and defeated than before. Now the hopeful tones are much more of a memory. Things become more discordant in general. Any ray of hope is immediately followed up by something evil sounding. Then, the rest of the song really seems to examine the situation from the standpoint that a tragedy has occurred, and reflects on the terrible things that have happened.
While the Diablo 3 music is good, it just doesn't seem nearly as deep or interesting in comparison. I also think that the new Diablo 3 music isn't as technically advanced as the original music. There are much less cool experimental techniques, just a generic sounding orchestra. The skillful and creative play of the guitarist is absent from any of the orchestral stuff.
The Starcraft 2 music is almost a complete failure in my opinion. The Terran theme in SC2 is OK, but it borrows all the best parts from the SC1 music anyways. The Zerg and Protoss music in SC2 fucking sucks though compared to the original.
It just seems to me that Blizzard's old songs really described a long and intricate narrative, as well as featuring a lot of great experimental techniques that are just uncommon in general. Nowadays Blizzard songs either seem like they're just amped up to max intensity from start to finish, or that they're just really ambient and boring.

I don't want to rag on the Diablo 3 music completely. There is actually one song from Diablo 3 that I quite like, which is the music featured in the second b-roll video from Blizzcon 2009: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-oeJaDVrBag
This music really captures a great set of emotions for me. Even though it is slow, there seems to be an extreme intensity within it. When juxtaposed with the gameplay footage it gives me a really great image: that of the human heroes battling against an endless horde of monsters with all of their strength. They continue to push forwards, crushing foe after foe, and yet never get closer to their ultimate goals. Their apparent success is like a tease as the clock continues to run out for sanctuary. Despite killing and killing, there are just more monsters swarming them and the defenseless people they're trying to protect. The music does calm down a little bit a few minutes in. The listener is serenaded with chilling solos from the classical plucked instrument (anyone know what instrument that is?). The total bleakness of Sanctuary's future slowly sinks in as the song simmers darkly.
I like what I've heard from the D3 music, but I hope there's a lot of variation. Well, I just hope there's variation. From D2 I really like Act 2's music, so I hope part of that djembe-influenced music returns.
I don't think it's fair to compare our emotions when listening to both games' songs. This is because for Diablo 1, we associate the song with some very intense game moments. When hearing the song, those memories are triggered in the background, adding a whole lot of intensity.
Whereas the Diablo 3 music is still just music. We listen to it without the attached memories.

This^^^
I'm not sure how sold we would have been if we had been given the OST for Diablo 1 several years before playing it and expected to derive inspiration or emotion from it beyond it's natural melodies or dissonant tones.

Hmm this isn't completely true. I had just as much fun (if not more) playing Diablo II and LoD, yet I didn't enjoy the music as much as the original. I'm sure we can find people who have never played D1 and make them listen to the Tristram theme, and the song will still be highly praised. The music from D1 was Matt Uelmen's best IMO.
Well what he's saying pertains more to the D3 music, as obviously we have a large amount of nostalgia when it comes to D2 as well.
As for D3, we have no idea when/where the music will be used. Even if you listen to the Overture (or whatever one always reminds me of 'This place is thick with the stench of ghouls') as it plays during the WWI 2008 video, it seems a lot more epic than just the song by itself. Imagine if you were the one playing it with the music. Obviously you would attach it to whatever gameplay moment there was as opposed to it being just music as Veggie pointed out.
I loved the D1's music and how simple it was. Hopefully D3 can capture some of this but I highly doubt it.
