I have found that it is better to save the inventory space for blues now. There are so many whites that drop that you run out of space pretty quick. That coupled with the fact that most gold drops range from 10-45 a piece and those only sell for ~4-5 each, its not worth your time
Blizzard commented on this a while back. They said they don't expect people to pick up everything, they don't want people to. They have adjusted the prices items sell for so that players aren't going to pick up everything. The reason all this useless stuff drops is because Blizzard likes the feeling of loot explosions. They want you to kill a mob and a whole bunch of crap drops everywhere.
In Diablo II, there were some white items you really wanted to pick up anyway, just because they sold for a good chunk of gold, but I'm not sure if we'll be seeing that in Diablo III.
White items will not be worth the inventory space. No one will pick them up. If people start picking them up we'll reduce the meaningless amounts of gold they already sell for even further. We can address these things if they happen.
i pick up whites when i do sk runs, but drop it for room for blues. it amounts to a little over 50 gold in sales with a full inventory. not a lot but its not much trouble to pick it up either.
This discussion will never come to end at this rate.
I think it's safe to say it (based on the various posts) that it doesn't matter whether it's 'worth' it to pick up the whites gold wise.
I think it depends whether it's worth for you to pick it up or want to pick it up. This whole thread is based on preference. No, gold-wise, it's most likely not worth it.
But it depends whether you find any worth in picking it up, for whatever reason. Do you prefer to pick it up or leave it? That's the worth of the item to YOU. Not to anyone else.
To me? Yes, it's worth it. Because I like getting things from monsters I killed and yes, I'll go sell it or drop it for a better item along the way.
I managed to find +40% damage dagger with no level req and 10dps (came really handy for starting new chars). Blues may be "the way to go" later with proper chants, but I can see good whites being better than crappy itemized blues.
Right at the start yes but later on once you have found some rares or are able to craft decent armor and weapons whites will be a total waste of time.
I don't see how picking them up for gold can be worth it either. They are practically worthless, at least in the BETA. I am not gonna waste my time and inventory to run around and pick up items I can sell for 2-5 gold.
The thing is that it doesn't take any time really. I wouldn't run out of my way to pick one up but if it's right there, why not? It's still gold.
Fun little fact about white weapons in the beta...
As of the beta, "Balanced" versions of White weapons are some of the best DPS available when dual wielding. The reason being that +Decimal APS on one weapon gets applied to both weapons.
So if you have 2x "Balanced Hand Axe" each with +0.19 APS, each Axe actually gets +0.38 APS. Add the 2-4 DMG +5% APS Rings from the vendor and it's the highest DPS you can get dual wielding.
+Damage scales ridiculously well with faster APS so those rings and "Balanced" white weapons are insane. Find the fastest "Balanced" weapons you can!
Glad somebody else posted this on this thread. I'm using a pair of Balanced Simple Daggers on my Monk to get to a total of 2.41 aps and he is doing only 10 total dps less than with much higher damage rare Shivs. Daggers deal 3-7 dmg and the shivs 5-13, 8.5dps vs 14.2dps. I THINK I saw something mentioned about this being a bug in the betta, not sure.
In my 2 days of playing beta it only felt worth it to pickup whites to stock myself with gear, once i had white shoes i wouldn't pick any up till i found a magic 1. I am not a fan of selling stuff for gold too much of a nuisance for me and not fun at all. Kept every magic though i didn't actually try the crafting with the black smith.

Man I wanted to say that!!
Basically this. Bash also commented on this with something in the line of it is just there acting as confetti for the blue/gold/orange/green items that drop with them. And think about it, if you kill a huge mob of demons and not a single item drop, it will feel like you you accomplished far less than if 5 grey items drop.
Maybe later in the game if you're really strapped for gold you could consider picking up white items with good affixes. This will depend what the value of item is, you'll have to balance that decision out yourself. I don't think picking up most white items will be a good idea.
White items are in the game probably as a clear developer message "if this white sword has better numbers than your legendary one, it's time to move on from that, pal". They're most likely there as a "baseline" reference of what's the absolute least you need to even be marginally effective at a given point in the game.
It's possible we'll have to change rare or magic items for better "white" items every now and then (if you're not getting lucky and you just spent all your gold on the auction house, so you can't get better stuff from vendors).
I'm sure a useless "white item" on Hell is better than a lot of mid-tier Nightmare legendary stuff, and I hope we keep seeing them.
They make me feel like "aw man, I got kinda lucky and got an item drop, but not lucky enough for it to be blue/yellow".
White items aside from maybe weapons would never be an upgrade once you get past beta levels.
Why is this thread 2 pages long, lol. The answer is simple,
NO!

One is never hurt by being given additional choices, only by taking them away. A QUADRILLION MAGIC FIND is worthless if you can't kill shit!
I have watched many streams that leave grey and white items on the floor, are they of any use? If this is in the wrong section i am sorry, i did not know where to put it.
What I usually do is pick up white items at the start or until my inventory fills, then dump stuff. When I go to town, I want to maximize my returns.
Originally I was just picking them up to sell them. But when blues (in beta) sell for 60+ and whites sell for 4-6... its really not worth it to pick it up. So later on you have to imagine... blues maybe selling for 4-500? (possibly more) and whites might sell for 10-20? if you are about to TP back to sell it might be worth it to sell, but otherwise really not worth it.
Digging around at d3inferno it seems elite whites sell for ~25g
there are some exceptions. Archon place sells for a whopping 26g
Not worth it. the curve starts at nearly worthless and gets worse from there. Not at all like D2 with class whites and some elite whites others still valuing in the thousands.
I usually pick them up then dump a whole bunch next to the waypoint, so I can sell them in town really fast and get on with playing...I never had enough gold in the beta, there was always something I wanted to buy or craft so gold became kinda like crack for me. I would sell the whites I had piled up but it wouldnt amount to much...
Whites are a waste of time. Only useful on your first ever character that doesn´t much on him/her.
Whites are only there till fill in any empty slots at the very start of Diablo. After a couple of levels you will have enough gold to buy some blues. Whites aren´t even worth carrying to sell later for gold which at most in the beta is round 2- 5 gold.
