I don't see anything sad about it. If some guys someday didn't make the Doomsday engine, I would still be stuck with the good old shooters all on DoxBox (any Doom fans here?). I'm thankful to guys like these that update games. I think it even looks a bit better than Warcraft.
Since I always kept with variations of Riven... my common nick was RivenIXBT because no one ever had it (any google link from it is me). But I guess you don't support those?

You got it a bit wrong. The part "Dima" is a common Russian name, short version of "Dmitriy". Or, if you skip the D, "ima" looks like "im'a" which would stand for "name". The Russian word "russian" is "russkiy". Both of those start with "rus". But Dimarus is a very common name. It mostly comes from Dima + rus - many Russians on the internet name themselves this way. How do you like Svetarus?
I found AoM pretty lame compared to AoE II. Well, I didn't like EE either (overpowered, if you ask me, way too many ages). AoE III was sort of OK but it was way too different. I just stick with AoE II, the Random Map makes the game infinite.
Gears of War is a TPS, right? Is there enough shooting, or is it devoted to jumping, too?
I'm waiting for that and also for Turok. The old Turok games were awesome, except the first one, it was way too primitive...
Still, there is no better genre to put it in, and so that's where it ends up.
Well, actually, most places Diablo is mentioned as an Action RPG or as a hack&slash or as action-roleplaying... which is enough for me to distinguish one way or the other.
no need to get technical. both are still RPGs. i always tend to gategorise games by their base genre type; RPG, RTS, Fighting, Sport, Racing, action/adventure ... and i guess MMORPG counts as a seperate genre.
hardly anything in common? i always figured that had quite a bit in common not a lot but there are some similarities. both have swords and sorcery, a medieval fantasy setting, a great deep intriguing storyline, interesting NPCs, similar classes, mulptiple chars to choose from, great free to play online multiplayer, good single player, similar enemies but i could be wrong lol
Well, I believe that the major genres are not enough to distinguish games (and you forgot TBS and simulation and FPS!), I stick to the sub-genres. Deus Ex is RPS (Role Play Shooter/Slasher), and Alien Shooter is Hack&Slash (a great game, by the way)...
If those distinctions that you mentioned are enough things to call a game an RPG then heXen is one, because, you know what? It has classes and fantasy setting and storyline, and long lines of text instead of NPC's (considering there is no dialogue in Diablo it makes no difference). Still, heXen is RPS at best, FPS with RPG elements, rather. You are, too, getting technical.
Currently I'm playing NWN 2 / DII / SS 2... enough games to cycle through.

Diablo 2 LOD is too boring to be played for such a long time.
And considering games similar to Diablo, they are: Nox, Titan Quest, Sacred, pretty much it. All other games, including NWN, Baldur's Fate, and other have nothing to do with Diablo's genre. Which means it doesn't matter what genre to pick, really.
But elfen is right, we need to pick games that are somewhat simular to diablo.
I don't really see why. There isn't many Hack&Slash out there... Titan Quest... And even if we do, why nobody is proposing Nox? What does NWN has to do with Diablo?

Heretic II? It is a shooting game. At least, more shooting than most TBS these days. But it's old. 2000 You can dl it at old games... I myself am trying to find a good TBS, but I didn't see anything farther than Lara Croft or Prince of Persia, all those jumping and melee games...
You don't need a legal game to play with friends, you only need Hamachi - that's what I'm talking about. Currently, with old games, it only makes sense to play with friends or on private servers like PGT, because all other places, hacks everywhere. Even StarCraft! WCII and WoW work, but I play neither, so I can only wait for Diablo III and StarCraft II to buy, so far, no multiplayer for me, unless I get a friend who plays Diablo II/StarCraft...
The bad thing about Blizzard is their support of old games. I bought Diablo 1, could have as well downloaded it - after I went to the multiplyer, people in there were copying items, giving themselves 99999 health, casting apocalypse on level 1, etc... impossible to play properly.
Well, I think Blizzard won't let us down. Add a few classes, redo the old ones, change damage calibrations, add something new in, Blizzard always had wonderful ideas. Of that, I do not worry.
