Hi everyone, so I'm new to d3. I'm just about to enter Leoric's Manor on Nightmare difficulty and I'm looking for some advice.
I found Normal really easy... and Nightmare has been just as easy. But then I found out that you can set MP in every difficulty. I had ramped it up to MP10 and fought an elite pack which was the first time I faced a challenge. So now that I know the game offers more of a challenge I have a renewed interest.
Even though I enjoy a challenge, I don't want to be running around like a derp, ya dig? So basically I'm wondering what MP level should I run for my leveling and is there a better build I could be using?
Well MP10 offers the biggest challenge and the most XP. Do you use the AH while leveling? If you're constantly getting / buying upgrades I'd just stick with MP10 for awhile, but if it's taking you ages to kill anything then lower it. Literally depends on your gear =D

I haven't purchased anything off the AH yet and I'm not sure what counts as taking ages. I finished act 1 last night and it took me about 7-8 minutes to kill The Butcher, but I didn't die! (thanks to those refilling health tubs.
Some people level up as fast as they can. They will use every means to empower their character with the best gear, the highest dps builds, the shortest leveling routes.
Some people enjoy the theme, stories, characters, and quests. They take their time exploring every nook and cranny. A ten minute boss fight isn't considered time-consuming, it's thought of as an epic battle.
Some people dabble with one character class only to swap to another ten minutes later. They might spend more time trying out different skills than they do questing.
Find out what works for you and do that. There is no right way only your way.
Personally: I limit myself to using the Auction House for only one character. My alts level up with only what I find in my travels. It makes for a more compelling gameplay. To me, being able to buy anything you want cheapens the experience.
So working my way through act 2 I'm noticing my Templar and dogs/Garg are dying quite frequently. So either I reduce the MP or use another build. Any suggestions there? I'd rather use another build since the one I'm using is kind of dull.
Also to note. I have yet to kill any treasure goblins I've come across since I set it to MP10. They always jump in their portal with about 1/4-1/3 health left.
Your pets (Dogs/Gargantuan) can survive better if you get more Armor/Resists (although these are not available in Nightmare iirc) and more health in general.
Your Templar can also survive pretty well if you get some regen and very defensive items
Your build looks ok. You could swap out your pet spells (and passives) for DoT spells like Locust Swarm and Haunt, or Pyrogeist and Spider Queen, which you can cast and then proceed to spam other spells. You could also swap them out for more defensive spells (like Horrify, Spirit Walk and Mass Confusion).
Effiienct MP10 pretty much requires optimal gear for a certain gear level, so you'd probably need to spend a few thousand gold on the AH to get close to that and do MP10 comfortably.
Playing on MP 7-8 should be enough of a challenge without any frustrations.
