"once the pretty hardcore gamers we had testing inferno found it fairly difficult, we then we doubled it" -trolololol jay wilson
Did you really just ask if Jay's post was a sign of release? He says they'll be announcing the release date in the near future! OF COURSE IT'S A SIGN OF RELEASE!..... *ahem* Got a little excited there.
I haven't got the beta, but from what I've seen it looks like Blizzard has done a great job with skill balancing and making multiple builds viable. Someone mentioned earlier about how runes "overpower" any ability, this is true, but think about it - you unlock every skill before you even get to hell (possibly by mid NM, I cba looking it all up), you only need the abilities in their basic form to progress. That's the difficulty curve and if blizzard get it right (and I have every confidence they will) then it should provide a fantastic gameplay experience and when you earn a rune for a given skill it will feel like you earned it! This should keep things exciting all the way to Inferno.
Bashiol: "We all subscribed to the idea that in an RPG you build a character, there's an investment in those choices, and that makes the game fun. We do not believe that to be true for these two games any longer, it may make total sense for another game, but for ours it does not." Why? Just because?
I think it's the whole social/softcore/hardcore player fanbase - they're trying to cater for everyone and realised that they need to be hospitable towards lesser skilled players but not patronising to the hardcore fanbase. They've been trying to strike a balance now for a while and this is something new they're trying. Whether it works or not remains to be seen.
I always thought that the new rune system announcement would be shortly-followed by the release date. This message from Jay makes me think that they intend to make the release date announcement in the next 2 weeks. That would make a viable date in early April, just giving the opportunity for a April Fools joke "announcing" the new delay in the development to 2013 along with some groundbreaking changes, such as changing the barbarian into a bard and making Diablo a playable class.
if i understand it correct we no longer have any level on skill runes?.. so we get the same bonuses as we should have got from a rank 7 rune. once a rune got unlocked?
You are correct that there are no longer rune ranks. However I think I read that all runes are now equal to roughly what a rank 4 or 5 was.
I'd agree with that timescale Roger, the April Fools thing really wouldn't suprise me either... Maybe they'll announce the release date as something crazy like 23/5/2013...
I was surprised how much coverage Bash's "expectation" comments got everywhere. When I read it I thought it was funny. I'm glad Jay stepped in and commented.
Been beta testing since patch 8 or 9 (can't remember- back when you could swap skills immediately at any time).
I'm okay with the rune system. I was excited about the old rune system because having another item to collect and improve your character meant more immediate customization. Having 6 different runes types meant you had 6 different variations on each skill as soon as you found a level 1 rune. Now the different runes are staggered throughout the leveling process, and while that means you wont get that complete customization until the higher levels, it gives you a little upgrade to look forward to nearly every new level.
I would have loved to see the original system use some kind of additional UI where you found a rune it became imbued into your character and you'd never have to worry about picking up another ever again- an unlockable item, kind of like the quest items from diablo 2 (Atmas's book, Aldor's Potion, Malah's Scroll). That way you could have the variety sooner than later, but they'd increase in power the higher levels you find along the way and not have the inventory space issue.
I understand Blizzard probably bit off more than it could chew with the original system. At this point I just want to play the game. I know Blizz will continue to tweak the content and mechanics for many years to come. I'd rather they release a watered down rune system now and maybe redo it in a later patch a year down the line then continue to noodle month after month.
Tenhi if you posted this on the US forum, Bashiok will certainly say to you that your wrong because the way it is now you have billions and billions of more builds and they are reinventing the RPG elements with this new revolutionary system, how naive can you be to eat this bs..
Not sure what you are talking about... but sounds like general QQ. First thing... what BS am I buying? Also my post isnt about "billions and billions of builds" or "RPG elements" its about the fact that having the ability to choose our runes ourselves would be way better than the way they have it right now. So if you didnt understand my Post... I'm AGAINST the auto-rune-asignment...
Edit: Just glanced through your other posts... well you are a troll. So this post is a waste and now I feel bad "Diablo 3 isnt Diablo 2 with better graphics... BLIZZ SUCKS"... yeah right.
You wasted a point, better re-roll your forum career!
On a more serious note, I understand the reason they are making these choices. Almost all of the things they are changing are to make the game more accessible and enjoyable to more people. Sadly, this sometimes means that experienced or even average gamers like the game less as a result. Yes, they want to sell as many copies as they can, get as many people to like the game as they can. Those are their reasons, they're logical and understandable, but being one of the people that actually likes thinking and games, we're the ones that have to be left unsatisfied.

No, they most certainly are not. This day and age of gaming is dark exactly because even the very people buying the games actually look at it this way. No wonder the gaming world is such garbage.

One could argue about the "Wow generation" of gamers that spend time compared to a real job playing just one game made the gaming world garbage also (not just their lives).
Don't think that a game is garbage just because it is not as it used to be. There used to be very hard games in Genesis that you lost EVERYTHING if you died once, but I think that people enjoy today's easy games a lot more. And don't lie, you didn't like the frustration of dying and doing it all over again also, sometimes you even might have thrown the controller on the ground. The satisfaction of getting through is not that nice to compensate the frustration.

What I meant was logical and understandable was that Blizzard chooses to cater to whatever will make them the most money. Logical, understandable. Certainly not artistic, but I think that people that live in a capitalistic society trying to make money is certainly understandable.
I didn't say it was 'good', 'right' or even 'moral', but those are separate issues.
hmm new runes resemble the classic LOD runes. Thats both a good thing and a bad thing. Good is that it has a similar aesthetic taste. Yet bad is that its not different as we would think it would be. Also, It looks similar but of higher quality than the LOD runes.

A hundred thousand worlds, ten hundred thousand wars. There is no respite, there is nowhere to hide. Across the galaxy there is only war.
Anyone else thinks they should just let Bashiok deals with the communication around the game? I feel he's doing a much better job than Jay explaining their choices. I've seen a lot of people losing faith in this game over the last year, with all the poorly handled PR, from "Shut up pvp guy" to "look at how awesome this game is."
All of this mess could have been avoided if they had just been better at communication. Anyway, let's hope the game lives up to the hype now, fingers crossed.
