He [Necromancer] went off hunting for some ghost and was mortally wounded in the process. You watch him die as the ghost comes out and then you get to kill it.
... ... ... I officially hate this game. =[

Be it through hallowed grounds or lands of sorrow
All in the Forger's wake is left bereft and fallow
Is the residuum worth the cost of destruction and maiming;
Or is the shaping a culling and exercise in taming?
The road's goal is the dark Origin of Being
But be wary through what thickets it winds.

Heroes rise and fall in the Eternal Conflict. The Warrior, Sorcerer and Rogue that ventured into Diablo's cathedral in Tristram were all turned; the Sorcerer took up the mantle of the Summoner in Lut Ghulein; the Rogue, Bloodraven, became a vassal of Andariel; and Aidan the warrior became a new host for Diablo.
What about the Barbarian, Necromancer, Assassins, Druid, Sorceress, Paladin, and others from Diablo II? Do we know what became of any of them in the past 20 years?
I know I could wait for players to update the wiki. But I'm just too impatient to find out.

Well they did leave open the black soulstone. Since it kind of just falls off into the clouds in heaven after diablo disintegrates.
Actually if you watch the final cinematic, you can make out the Black Soulstone dissolving into dust, meaning the Prime Evils are probably done. Which saddens me. I liked Mephisto. =[
Though I swear I see a pair of eyes in the upper-right as the clouds break.

Lazarus had been exposed to Mephisto's Soulstone at some point prior to arriving in Tristram. He was initially corrupted by the Lord of Hatred before being sent to Tristram as representative of the faith of Zakarum. While serving King Leoric, Lazarus encountered Diablo's soulstone beneath the Tristram Cathedral and was compelled to free Diablo.
The how and why of the corruption is moot. The Prime Evils had discovered degrees of latitude while being imprisoned within their soulstones; they could only influence individuals physically close to them, but that influence could be very strong.

I've been watching some videos, trying to piece the entirety of Diablo 3 together. I've watched the cinematics, and am trying to get the whole thing revolving around the Black Soulstone.
So the heroes journey to Caldeum and defeat Kulle, taking the Black Soulstone. However, as he charges it, it seems to draw into itself the souls of the dead lords of Hell spontaneously. It's later "revealed" that Adria "marked" the demons' souls, allowing them to be drawn in. Is this ever elaborated upon? How did she "mark" them? And how does the Black Soulstone destroy them with Diablo's "final defeat"? It seems like they'd simply be banished back into it, their essence waiting within.

Both Angels and Demons resemble humans. Most demons are humanoid in appearance, and Lilith and Andariel look particularly human. Angels are also humanoid, though their "essence", I guess we can say, is contained within their wings. In fact, the way Metzen talked at the Lore Panel last year, he said the wings were the literal manifestation of an angel, with the body and armor being akin to hands.
When stripped of his wings, the wings fall away and leave behind its "hands". Perhaps this is simply an aspect of the overall entity that was once Tyrael? His being is now sundered, substantially weakened. The Wings may have transcended or become one with the Arch again, leaving behind his memory and will in the "Hands."
What's the purpose of all this, if he's only becoming weakened? Well, his actions in Sanctuary were reduced both because of laws governing Angels in the mortal realm, and restrained by his own kin. Stripping himself of his angelic raimant weakened him but allowed him to guide humanity directly.
I'm still disappointed by this turn of events though. I was hoping Imperius would imprison Tyrael's spirit within a human vessel. =[

So Wirt's resurrected as Kantwirt, Asmodan's manifestation of the Deadly Sin Greed?
Y'know, it might be interesting if all of Asmodan's Lesser Evil lieutenants were enslaved to take on their designated Deadly Sin roles. Though I'd think Gheed would be a better choice for Greed.

I'm fairly confident that it's just gameplay, just as Town Portals and waypoints aren't part of the lore in any way.
Actually, I'm pretty sure a reference is made to them in the first manual. Scrolls imprinted with a special, crystal-infused ink are relics created by ancient mages that make use of waypoints, and can be used to identify objects. They are one-time use objects because any magical current completely destroys the delicate crystals in the ink.
Yeah, it's kinda lame, but it's still an explanation, no matter how small.

So Blizz recently came out with this announcement on the Nephalem Valor Buff. At level 60, your character gains a buff / aura for a duration upon defeating unique mobs or monsters. What do you suppose this means for the lore? Is it a purely gameplay mechanic, with no bearing on the storyline or nature of Sanctuary?
I personally doubt it, and it probably has to do with the resurgance of Nephalem-level power among humanity. It'll probably be explained as warriors finding this innate strength deep down at the core of their being when faced with overwhelming opposition. A limit breaking, I suppose.
Would that make your player character an Edyrem once it reaches level 60? That's the point at which the buff is accessible; and Edyrem are those humans who have awakened their inner nephalem power, as stated in the Sin War Triology.
It makes me wonder how the Nephalem Cube is linked to the past of Sanctuary. Who made it? Did it inspire the Horadric Cube? Why does it only destroy?

Actually, come to think of it, the tale of Aidan, Leoric and the others of that family is strangely elegant in its tragedy. The sins of the father are passed down from one to the next to the next. I mean, we're dealing with three generations in the lives of a cursed family. That one retcon behind the Dark Wanderer's identity was pretty moving. That sort of ennobles the Dark Wanderer in my view.
