Right, so my current computer is getting quite old since I got it in ~2003. It's starting to get slow just doing simple tasks like opening video files (100% cpu, doesn't respond). So, I'll get a "loan" and get a new computer in June and work it off over the summer. Budget is still pretty low (~$550). I've settled on this, so far. Just wanted to have it checked over by others to see if anything else would work better. I'm mostly getting it because there are finally some good games coming out on the PC: Diablo 3, Starcraft 2, and Cities XL, among others. Don't want to have to run it in 800x600 res with very low graphics I have a 1440x900 monitor.
Depending on what size monitor you have I might suggest you up the video card memory to 1gb.
It's only 1440 x 900, so I figured the extra $20 wasn't really worth it.
Maybe when the prices inevitably come down in 2 months. But by then newer cards in $100 range will be out, so graphics card is the least permanent of the parts listed. I probably shouldn't even put it up.
Hopefully not insulting your computer knowledge here; I just assume that most people have limited experience building computers.
You need a bigger power supply, no? Looked at the graphics card specs on Nvidias website and says you need a minimum of 450W
Oh, and are you running a 64bit OS? If you're not running XP 64 or Vista 64 your system won't take full advantage of all 4 megs of ram
The best site I can recommend for parts in www.pricewatch.com I've used them probably 10 years now. For some reason it's down right now, but when it comes back up check it out. I've built 3 computers (including the one I'm on now) over the years buying from their site. Well, good luck!
400 watts does seem low, but since its a corsair it should be a reliable and consistent power source, other than a no-brand name 400w that produces half that much. Plus the 30 amps on the single +12v line seemed sufficient. Graphics card companies always list higher than needed power requirements, anyways, so people with 400w PSUs that are cheap and dont supply enough dont complain to them and the company loses money.
And yeah I'll be using 64 bit Windows 7.
Thanks for the input, though.
also, I tried to find the most powerful 400w to say to idiots that get 1200 watt PSUs "I run the same components on a 400 watt power supply"
Yeah, usually they are over speced for PSUs and Corsair is a fine brand in my opinion; they make a lot of quality parts. No problem on the input; I love talking about computers. Good luck, hope it all goes well.
He did mention he is on a low budget, not like he's going to be buying the highest end gear he can. Maybe instead of insulting him you could give a suggestion?
Insult him? Is something wrong with you (and him for that pretty funny little comment) ? Weaksauce isn't insulting. Even if I had said "fuck your power supply and your graphics card" it wouldn't have been insulting..since it's, y'know..HIS COMPUTER. I gave him my opinion, which is those are weak. Low budget or not, I gave my honest opinion. Don't toss around words just for the sake of tossing them around, you and him.
By the time Diablo 3 comes out, will he be regretting getting a machine now?
By then I would have suffered a heart attack from getting angry at my extremely slow computer.
That's the way the hardware industry works; you buy new stuff, and in 3 months it becomes obsolete. No matter what there will always be better stuff in the near future. But you gotta get the best bang for your buck, and with amd's Phenom II's, they seem to get it just right. The video card is still up in the air ATM, though. Was actually thinking of overclocking it a tad, since it's the most effective and easiest boost to performance. But I could also save $60 by getting a 710 and a motherboard with a chipset that isn't as helpful to overclocking. Not sure.
Also, Newegg is running a weekend deal where they upped the price of the antec 300 by $5, but added free shipping. I didn't check before, but does anyone know the usual cost of shipping it? Would it be a good idea to take advantage of this deal and buy the case now?
Problem with overclocking on a PSU without abundant power is the integrity of the supplied voltages. No steady voltage, no stable overclocks.
As for the video card, I personally would look at 4850's and 4870's. I have a 4870 and it's rock solid and will handily take care of Diablo 3. If you're dead set on Nvidia chips, go with a 260, but then I would say you would need a mandatory PSU upgrade.
I honestly would hole off a month and build then. I just wouldn't be satisfied with that system,

9800gtx+ (gts 250) beats out the 4850 in most games that i'm planning on playing. 260 is ~$210 and and on a budget if you have read. Also if you had read, I'm building it in June not now, and there will be multiple new cards in the ~$100 area that should be sufficient. Also as I've said 3 times the graphics card choice is up in the air. Sorry for the rudeness but usually your are more constructive with your posts. I expected more from you, GG

Just bought a new HDD recently (seagate 7200.10 iirc)
Come June, if there are any good combo deals that include any of the listed parts or anything similar, will probably grab that.
So yeah, any recommendations are appreciated.

If you plan on doing no overclocking whatsoever, the PSU should be fine.
Other than that, it looks okay. I can't really recommend buying a budget system, but I've always gone big or gone home.

According to your post - the one before this one - I would conclude that you stopped because of the ignorance, not the noobs.
