There's no stat randomizing from what i've read, but stats are automatically assigned to your class. For example, you're not going to get a bunch of intelligence on your barb, and you're not gonna get a bunch of strength on your Wizard. It will work like World of Warcraft, where you get stats that match your class.

Stay.
You don't always know where you stand,
'Till you know that you won't run away.
There's something inside me that feels...
Like breathing in sulfur.
but every char is the same its so stupid...... why would you want to put anything into str or dex if your a straight up caster... why would you waste any points into mana if your melee... its just makes the control over your char less and less...

You just proved the points of so many people.

haha so yea, if you didn't have auto-stats, everybody would have the same stats anyway.
With auto-stats they won't be the same because of the skills and all, but you didn't bother read my post.
haha so yea, if you didn't have auto-stats, everybody would have the same stats anyway.
No, because they will receive varying amounts of stats depending on the type and quality of their gear.
Not that it made a difference anyway. In D2 everyone went for the same stats, except what the Str requirement on gear was a bit different which SLIGHTLY changed the Str/Vit ratio from player to player, and not having any greater impact on the game than wearing different items does.
There was no choice in stat assignment. There was only optimal and less optimal way to do it. Whichever the case, it restricted you forever in what gear you can wear.
The whole auto assigning was to make the game challenging. What they need to do is incorporate a system where if you were a constant melee in your battles, that stats like vita and str will be gaining the most of the attributes...and if you were a person to cast a lot of spells, that vita and magi will gain the bulk load of attributes.

Those before me shall quiver in my wake as I unleash the fury within!
expected hardcore mode, but was relieved nonetheless for its confirmation
i hate side quests but realize im in a minority on that.. just hoping their not too painfully long or neccessary for character development
i liked potions and i'm sad to see them go... using potions and rejuvs made a lot of things possible that would have been tedious and annoying otherwise. (for example mana potions vs standing around waiting for mana regen)
and on hardcore especially they gave you a safety net that allowed you to play more aggressively.. a playstyle that i prefer over going slow and careful
like everyone else i think 4 players is too low so i'm hoping that they can realize their 8 player ambitions.. (and also hoping that the public list of games and "hostility" are also incorporated in that "easier join system")
and i don't like the auto assignment of stats; i liked the system in d2 where you chose your stats and those choices shaped your character and allowed or disallowed you to use gear; it created a lot of options for character customization that wouldn't have existed otherwise:
you want a melee sorc?
low vita high mana, eng shield sorc?
want to look different than most people at the expense of some str?
want to have a 10k life barb/4k selfbo vita paly?
330 dex (max block) spirit shield asn?
etc..
your skill choices, stat choices, gear choices, charm choices (merc choices) all together shaped your character. removing one or more of those as a variable option removes some potential to choose how your character ends up.

serving only to ensure absolute vulnerability to the pain of their inevitable absence.
Some guy on diii.net made a very good argument for autostats:
Stats depend directly on skills and gear worn. There is no different way to assign your stats for the same skills and gear worn. E.g., stats are automatic already with the choice to screw up your character. There is no uniqueness here.
haha so yea, if you didn't have auto-stats, everybody would have the same stats anyway.
Yes. So why add in a feature that doesn't do anything?

Yes they would. For every skill setup there is one and only one correct stat setup. End of story.

No, you wouldn't be better than me. First of all, you'd put those points in there just as well, and you have when you just began the game. Second of all, eventually people will figure out all the bugs, write up guides, and everyone will follow the guides, which is what Diablo is right now.

ive never followed a guide before, i just use them to spark ideas for other chars... like my fire druid or my psn javazon
yeah when i first started i put points into str and dex, thats because i was a noob..... when i smartened up i never put anything into dex or str, for most chars....

Yeah, and, obviously, most people go through that noob stage... why have it at all? In a year or so everyone will know what to do and it will be gone. Auto-stats offer absolutely nothing but a paradox inside the game that noobs will fall into. I see no reason for that. Blizzard agrees it was a design flaw.
Fire druid and psn javason are not your ideas, trust me.

why would you want people who suck at the game to stand a chance to be an equal....
people are supposed to suck and people are supposed to get picked on, thats why we need pk and micro and dominating items.
i never looked up my chars i just made them, they were my ideas....

I do not associate noobishness with sucking.
People are all in different groups.
Some people just want to be totally best at the game.
Some want to be the best but fail to be the best.
Some just want to have fun.
Those are who developers cater to. Sucking is really a silly concept, anyway.

PK promotes assholish attitudes, we don't need those. Anywhere. Micro? Go play Nox. Dominating items? Sure, as long as they are not duped like crazy.
But, there is no reason to fool a noob. Good players should not be distinguished by the amount of time they played the game. They should be distinguished by the effort they put in the game. A game needs to be balanced well for starters, and have a steep and hard learning curve to separate the amateur for-fun players against the more serious. See StarCraft. It's very simple to start, very hard to master. Diablo II is sorta like, hard to start, easy to master, lol.

That's sort of true, but then I invented the shock paladin! lol
Diablo II has a few stats modes. Shield, Vit, and Glass Cannon. No matter what char you build, you go into one of those three. And for every skill combination, you choose one particular stat allocation mechanic in accordance to items and skills. There is a mathematically perfect model for every skill combination you pick. There is no such thing as two mathematically perfect models. In other words, you cannot make your character unique using stats, because there is only one way to properly allocate them, and the options to allocate them improperly. Hence, stats are useless.
Strange cause the exact same thing can be said about skills, items, actually pretty much any game ever made which makes use of any sort of stats.
Any unbalanced game, maybe. Balanced games have trails that result in moderately equal results. Diablo II has hammerdins, but that was certainly not intended. Still, you can choose to make a zealot, hammerdin, auradin, or whatever. Stats? Not really. Hammerdin with a lot of Energy? Hmm?
Quote from "Doppelganger" »
But still, that makes your previous statement still a complete paradox seeing that you praise Blizzard for doing what you deem to be paradoxial, which you also state to be a design flaw. Doesn't make sense.
Oh, that's a mistake. I meant stat allocation not auto-stats...

They won't have the same items, they won't have the same skills, they won't have the same runes.
"Being good" is shown when you are alone versus monsters.. not when you click on a big + to add to your strength.
You can still PLAN because you still have to choose what talents and passive skills you want.

No potions = so fun, people can kill mobs to heal the party, so you need to use skillz, and anyone can be a healer. AWESOME.
