Half of the untrue Diablo 3 rumors up until this announcement centered around Belial. Now that the real McCoy is here, I'm still seeing way too much of him for my tastes, with claims that he is the main boss, or even that he has been Tyrael all along. At the risk of being flamed by Belial's faithful worshipers, I have to ask why? He's a lesser evil, similar in power to Andariel and Duriel. Reading Legacy of Blood, I gathered two things about Belial: 1. Most people haven't even heard of him. 2. His war with Azmodan has been going badly. I've got nothing personal against him. I'd love to see him in the game. I'd love to kill him within the first 2 acts and move on and fry my bigger fish.
P.S. While Belial was indeed a demon prince in Hebrew mythology, the word also meant worthless to them.
As far as I can tell, there's not much reason to rule out Diablo, Mephisto and Baal playing big roles again. Doesn't it stand to reason that destroying the soul stones would simply release their souls again? Maybe I'm wrong, been a good bit since I've played/read...
I'm all about having Diablo as our main baddie again... to me nothing rivals the buildup from D1 of those last couple levels before you finally see that fucker. I know 8 year old me had nightmares that night!
Personally, I believe I've read a couple hints dropped that the heavens might be involved, whether through a corrupted Tyrael, or someone bigger we've not yet met.

Even if he own 80 legions, Diablo owns all of Hell! Thats quite a bit more!

I personally never quite understood how the "prime" evils were over-thrown.. Just confused me how this major evil characters were tossed from hell.

The prime evils were not waging any wars. Belial and Azmodan took it that they were just weak and tried to overthrow them. The prime evils succeeded in decimating 2/3 of the legions in hell before they were forced out into the mortal realm.

Ah.. well one can only imagine what it was like when all Mephisto and Diablo came back with their tail between their proverbial legs.

I don't see Azmodan or Belial taking a place of power. Most likely still a lesser evil and will play a minor role if anyone in Diablo 3. And besides, the monster in the trailer looks so much like Diablo is obvious. Its not named anything else, so Diablo is STILL the main man.

How do you know this? Which books (If any) are you learning this from?
I learned it from Elfen of course.

How does he look like diablo? Because he is a demon? Thats the only resemblance I see. Do you even listen?
He does look similar to Diablo... I'll say similar.. but the whole three heads deal kinda throws that one.

Since some were predicting maybe something worse than the 3... Is there knowledge of anything worse than those guys in the canon?

I personally think Belial might play a minor role, maybe a big one, I don't know.
Amen to both. This is not the place to discuss the 3 header.
Now, back on topic, I'd like to set the record strait on a few things. From the Diablo Classic Manual we learn Azmodan and Belial marshaled the ranks of hell onto Diablo, Mephisto, and Baal, on account of the fact that the Primes were more interrested in mortals than fighting Heaven directly, whilst Azmodan and Belial wanted to take the fight to heaven. Azmodan had the bright idea of sending the Primes into the mortal realm to distract the Heavenly hosts so they could press their attack. The Primes took out 2/3rds of the traitors demon army, but were banished. However, instead of executing their plan, the two lesser evils resorted to a very long civil war, ruining Azmodan's plan (this does not reflect well on Belial, or Azmodan). From the book Legacy of Blood we learn that the war has gone poorly for Belial. Furthermore, we learn from Izual in D2 that the Prime Evils, upon capturing Izual and obtaining the intel on the soul stones, planned their inprisonment, thus they most likely planned their banishment.
That said, I don't think Belial is as cool as people give him credit for. I expect him to show up as a boss in the first two acts, someone who will be killed and then left behind as we move on to deal with real problems such as the Primes, not squabling lesser evils who fail to recognize the potential of humanity, and who come up with a decent plan (even if they were manipulated into it), and then blow it on a petty rivalry.

Again I say, Diablo 0 Belial 80. That demon looks nothing like Diablo, or any other prime evil for that fact. Belial is the lord of lies. 20 years of peace? How could there be 20 years of peace when the gate that held the burning hells back was broken? I'll tell you why. Belial is like a master of puppets, hiding in the shadows till his followers become the majority. Dark Cultists anyone? I'll stir up some evidence, just give me a sec.

Interesting. With no prime or lesser evils to keep him down he may and SHOULD have flourished. Actually Belial should be the lord of Hell now.
Maybe there is some sense with all this talk about Belial.

1, 2, 3. Not Diablo.
Not JUST Diablo, perhaps.
