Hey all, I am a long time reader, first time poster. After playing through the beta on every character I came to a realization rather quickly, that in general, the crafted gear was much better than the gear that dropped. I believe I found one exception to this rule...but. This was a little disconcerting to me. I started to look into the issue and I found an older video where Blizzard introduced Inferno mode. They showed models that they said where "from like a end of normal" or " middle of hell". I wonder if this is referring to crafted gear or drops.
I know those two points do not entirely go together, but I hope you can see the connection.
I loved running through Diablo 2 finding new gear and hunting for set pieces, I hope that dropped items still have a place...other than just to be turned into parts so that I can make the best armor in the game.
If this has already been addressed, I am sorry and would appreciate a link. My next class is about to begin so I did not have time to search the forums.
This is something that's likely to be tuned and balanced up to (and long after) the game's release, with big changes potentially coming in with expansions.
Given how little of the game is accessible in the beta, particularly the lack of the flattened-difficultyInferno, we can't draw any conclusions today.
I think adding crafted items to D3 was a mistake and I agree with the OP. Crafting such as adding gem slots to items is fine, but making entire items from scratch takes away from finding gear on the field. Either one or the other will offer better gear which would make one or the other less desirable. Crafting should have been a supplementary functionality to the found items.

But when your crafting ability pretty much depends on drops of various items... Then it kinda solves the problem doesnt it?
I think that the crafting system is an excelent replacement for the gambling system in d2 and a great addition to the drop system as a whole. Your ultimate gear will probably consist f both crafted items and dropped legendaries / sets.
Blizzard has said crafting is designed to supplement item finding. Allowing you to create an item you need until you are able to find it. They have stated repeatedly that loot will be your primary equipment still.
I really don't feel you can compare crafting in the Beta to what it'll be like in the full game, for the reasons Mesija said. The Beta ends abruptly very early on gameplay-wise, and your only option is to out level content by 4-5 levels. If you kill the Skeleton King at level 7, you really don't have access to the more powerful crafted items until you continue on in the story and head to new areas. I'm certain there will be a linear curve to the gear you find and the gear you craft, especially after the big changes to crafting in patch 15 (14? can't remember) when they removed and increased the level of many of the items you can craft.
Unless you decide to farm the Skeleton King 10-15 times after you beat him when you have the full game, you aren't going to hit that brick wall where there is a void of useful item drops because all the monsters are level 5.
I see myself spending a lot of time and gold attempting to craft that perfect item(s) for each class I have at 60 (eventually all I imagine).
I always liked crafting in d2 with the cube, but this system seems much better in that it has generalized ingredients rather than relatively quirky ones.
I imagine that the potential will exist for a crafted item to be BiS, but that the likelihood of you actually crafting it will be equivalent to fully gearing out 9 other characters.
Beta ends at level 8-9 monsters (skellies in crypt).
Blacksmith level 8 items are not that much superior. They help if you have the money, which you don't have a lot of a first playthrough to both craft and upgrade the blacksmith.
You cannot compare level 10-12 items to those that drop out of level 8 monsters.

The level on crafted items have been increased by quite a bit in the latest beta build, crafted items in the full game will be a good starting point, but its more of a gambling system, you might get extremely lucky and get close to a perfect item, but in most cases they will just be "melted down" to their raw materials again.
The game is more or less designed for capped characters. I could easily be wrong, but I think the npcs like blacksmiths etc are mainly there to help you gear up for upcomming content with a few exceptions as well as a sense of character progression, whereas the vast majority of the best items in the game will be rare (legendary etc) drops from inferno farming, otherwise there would be no point to farming and there'd be even less point to inferno mode.

^^^ This.
I believe crafted items are there to help you get up to speed on your items if you have had some bad luck looting a certain type. Imagine you are ready for inferno, but your best shoulder piece is a level 49. Time to do some crafting of the best shoulder piece available until you get something you like. Also, it gives you something to do while you are farming for said shoulder piece. Its basically giving us a game mechanic to keep us entertained with if we don't want to use RMAH to gear our characters. I don't expect everyone to reach level 60, unlock inferno and be ready to start killing there. There will be numerous options at that point for us: craft, farm, or RMAH. Once we get a character ready for inferno, thats when the real loot begins to drop. Inferno drops should be better than anything craftable until an expansion which will just move the finish line further away not changing the fact that the best items in game will still be loot drops, not crafted items.
All of your *good* items are going to come from drops. Crafting just exists so that you can use your resources to fill in slots where you haven't had any decent drops for.
Hm. I'm not entirely certain that we've seen all the crafting recipes. The ones over on Bnet might not represent the final game, just like how the drops are represented properly in Bnet as well.
There might be some incredibly rare recipes out there for sets/legendaries that make some pretty decent items. You never know! Until release.
I agree with PantheraOnca, I see crafting as something that is going to be done at lvl 60. And even that is a little fuzzy due to Inferno Mode.
Well, I'll be crafting gear for each of my characters until 60. I doubt I'll be crafting _after_ it. That way the game will be easier until I get all my skills and runes at which point I'm in grind mode and all that's left is the challenge and hunt for even rarer (:P) items! But as I said, there might be such rare recipes as well. So I might be crafting at 60 as well.
We just can't really speculate that much when we can see about 20% (if that) of what the BS can do and about 1-2% of the entire gaming experience in D3.
The Jeweler on the hand, is safe to be assumed absolutely _required_ pre- and post-60.
If you check items, crafted and legendaries and sets on diablo 3 blizzard's webpage you will see that crafted items are just for those who didn't have any luck yet and are not even half (or 1/3) as good as legendaries and sets.

That's what I thought!
