I have no doubt that MF will be more useful, its hard to say how big of a role gold will play in the game at the moment, gold will probably be quite useful in softcore but it will be very useful in hardcore, i will aim for a bit of gold find as well, but magic find takes first place for me, its more fun getting higher quality items and identifying them then just picking up more gold as well

I can potentially see Gold being the leveling up stat of choice and MF being the max level group gear. A Gold set will ALWAYS come in handy though, just slap on that gear, go to town on a few mobs in hell and then repair.
Mf pretty much buys you more tickets in the lottery. You might get lucky and cash in, but there are more people that are not so lucky and wont cash in.
This is how I feel.
Let's put it this way.
Let's say you have a 1/1,000,000 chance of finding a valuable item. You get +100% mf gear. Your chances go up to 1/500,000. That's quite the difference! However, the chances are still very slim that you are going to find a valuable item at all.
Now with gold find it is different. Say you can make 10,000 gold an hour. With +100% gf gear you are looking at 20,000 gold an hour instead. Long term this is a great difference... 2 million gold is a lot more than 1 million gold. Giving up that gold find for magic find is essentially paying for that difference.
Just a note… say everyone does GF stacking, and then there is more gold available... what is the result? Inflation everything becomes more expensive because everyone has more gold, you don’t necessarily improve your chances to buy gear if people raise the prices, but it will help more with gold sinks and crafting. MF will still be big for finding the actual items (even if it’s a small percentage).

Playing Diablo since 97. I know nothing and having nothing good to say, I be a troll.

It is a simple concept, you have MF to get more blues/epics/rares and possibly uniques. Gold to get...Gold for repairs, crafting and AH stuff. Gold Finding will not raise the prices because gold is hard to come by...they will already be greedy long before getting Gold Finding gear.
I don't think you should have either magic find or gold find until end game. Once you play through normal to hell in leveling/DPS gear then start farming for gold/gear. End game will give better loot anyways. I think it would be best if you have a full group that trusts each other. 3 people will be in full DPS gear while the last person is in all magic/gold find gear acting as support. But the game isn't out yet so I don't know how feasible it is to carry one person through nightmare.

It's the fastest way to level up your crafting, and the repairs are more then what you will earn running through a dungeon, so Gold Finding is well worth it imo.
guys, what's about having fg + mf on your items. It's assumable you'll have items wíth both stats. this was common in d2, and If I remember correctly I have already seen this 2 stats on d3 beta items.
You will not have a larger number of items drop.
The base quality of the item will not change (normal, nightmare, hell quality).
What will change is how "magical" the item is. You have a better chance of getting an item to be magical or better then white.
After thinking about this I think I agree with most of the posters here, gold find will initially be more useful because crafting gear is a much more reliable source then drops. Also this will give you more money for the gold auction house.
There are some variables that need to be considered for endgame because we dont know if there will be some higher end dimishing returns or what the gold to dollar trade rate will be. I'm guessing gold will be seriously seriously undervalued once the market starts to stabilize.

Ok so for example. Its me and one other person. I have mf they don'tm
we would both get say 6 drops. He would get 5 whites and 1 magic and I would get 3 white and 3 magic because of my mf.
Same quantity but my item quality was better (3 magic to his 1)

I should clarify what I stated. When I say it improves quantity, I meant the amount of magic items you find, but not the quality in which the magical item will be, meaning it does not improve weither you will get rare/unique or legendary, only that you have a very slight higher chance of one dropping.
You can craft a legendary (if that is possible) faster then one will drop probably, according to Blizzard they will be that rare.

That makes sense. That's what I was figuring.
I loved mfing in D2 but I feel I will go GF first in D3
Won't we all want to MF first to get the best GF gear possible? Probably not since the difference between moderate gold find gear and high gold find gear maybe isn't that substantial? Or maybe it is when you consider you'll want high dps gear with high GF or MF? Really interesting topic. I don't think I'd thought about it that extensively until this post. Does the impact of GF or MF gear change if your only dealing with a Gold auction house in the Hardcore mode? Inflation would be minimized quite a bit in hardcore with character death. For myself I think it'll be a reasonable mixture of both as playing Hardcore (which I will play primarly) will necessate surival and dps stats over the maximum GF or MF stated gear.
Magic Find and Gold Find on it's own is very nice. But to understand it fully you need to know how it is linked to killing speed. Killing speed being whatever ways/stats your character spec uses to get more kills per minute.
Magic Find and Gold find on their own give you a better chance or find more magic items and gold when you kill a monster. But because these 2 item affixes do not add any offensive stats your killing speed is slower. This is important because each kill is a chance at nice loot. So this creates a dilemma.
This dilemma is if I get better loot and gold per kill but less killing speed with Magic Find and Gold Find, then what is the solution. It all boils down to a simple formula.
Your MF or GF X your killing speed = the amount of good loot you can get.
The formula is not meant to be an exact numerical science. The reason for it is it show players that killing speed and your % MF and GF both are important when determining your total loot quality and amount. So the best players will work out the right balance of MF or GF gear on their toon and killing speed to they get lots of drop chances at high loot.
Diablo 3 is different to Diablo 2. Bosses are no longer the king of loot drops. Rares are. But 5 minutes (number taken hypothetically) killing a rare mob would roughly equal 5 minutes of trash mob killing. As in sure this is one kill vs many kills. But the quality of loot you get over and actively killing period will be roughly the same.
So in conclusion the main points are:
To get better loot you need to have MF/GF and kill fast. So you need to balance MF/GF as well as your dps (or kill speed). Finding just the right balance for your toon will maximise the quality of loot dropped for you and ensure you have a fun time playing Diablo 3.
You need to decide if you want to focus on 1 or the other.Dont try to focus on both.Make seperate charcters for each if you want because they both are going to have an extreme amount of usefulness in d3.With magic find gathering gear to sell or keep for ones self and gathering gold if needed to fuel your crafting. Each are there to benifit you thru your journeys through this upcoming epic gaming experience.

I thought it improves quality not quantity?
