Every time i see arguments about online only i start saying stuff like "oh shit only % of people so ans so"
i couldn't find a similar poll so i just wanna get some statistics right
if in fact there was already such poll, plz link it
Tbh, I think the Diablo II system was the best. You could do either, on-line or off-line. The "what about if an off-liner wants to go on-line after X months of playing" sounds to me as a masked way to enforce the piracy "protection" on-line mode provides and to ensure the $AH has the most potential customers possible.
Right now, if you ask me, I'm fine with on-line only, because it was the way I was planning on playing the game. When I get an internet outage and cannot play my game, I'll probably be pissed.
The way D2 was set up did allow for all the dupes and hacks, though, which was an obvious downside to it.
Not saying that it couldn't be re-done with better protection, but I have nothing against the new strategy since I have a rather stable internet connection and at least half a dozen neighbors' unprotected wlans available from my computing room.
lol WLAN, i was using unprotected internet for almost a year now, but right now it gives me 200+ ping in every game so i finaly ordered my own service (tbh mostly for d3 and LoL)
When D2 was released over a decade ago, one of it's cutting edge features was the client-server online protection. At the time of release this was top-shelf security and it took quite some time before any real cracks appeared in it. However, with enough time and effort everything can be cracked and now we have to current botfest of D2.
Now they wish to make D3 as secure as possible at release. If to get a high level of security so that bots/hackers/dupers/asswipes don't ruin my gaming experience I don't care if they force you to breath into a tube to get the program started. If it can keep my playing experience fun for as long as possible I say do it.
Whats even more ironic/moronic is that I bet 90% of the people who played D2 did so online or at best played offline only when forced to. Lets get real, in todays broadbanded world will being connected to play really be a problem? The only time I'm not connected is during a power outage, which tends to cause a serious degrade in gaming experience by itself. Get real and find something realistic to bitch about...
Ya, let's be real. I enjoy single player just as much as online play if not more so at times.

Totally indifferent to it. Never played the Starcraft II campaign offline either. Always been online. Other than my first character (till around level 30) I can't say I really played Diablo II offline either.
As long as the overall gaming experience is good and there aren't lags and other battle.net issues, I'm a happy player.

I look forward to every single one of your posts. And I'm never disappointed. You're like a microcosm of entertainment. +1
I think at this point it is worth mentioning that the percentage of neutral/indifferent and people ok with the online only is about 78%. 18% are unhappy but will still buy and play the game. Leaving only 4% not willing to get the game over this issue. Of course this is a small sample at this time but felt tallying up the totally would be worth noting right now.

I'd like an offline mode as an option, where you could not use those characters in the real game.
Will it effect me? No. When do I not have internet? Only when I'm on the road. So I really don't care, and it won't bother me. That said, I do not see why an offline-only mode is a problem. I wouldn't use it, but I'm sure somebody would.
I've played games online since 1996, maybe earlier. The fact that Diablo 3 requires i be online really means nothing to me. It's just another PC game related witch hunt that'll end as soon as D3 releases, or shortly after.
I'm sure the hitler videos will come out, the online petitions, the huge threads about the online component (all of which by the way are online only), but in the end, this too shall pass.

There is a vocal minority for everything online and blizzard titles tend to draw a wider assortment of players than most. It's no suprise then, we get mega-threads over things as insignificant as "which pvp mode do you like?" and "online only," which in practice won't effect the gameplay of the vast majority one iota.
I honestly don't understand what motivates people to rage about such trivial issues, but you can rest assured someone will make even the smallest mole-hill into everest.
I submitted that "I'm neutral about it" but really I'm torn both ways.
I completely understand the reasoning for it from a security point of view (and I for the most part understand why Blizzard thought that this would be a non-issue for most players), but MAN I really hate it when the internet goes out or I'm on a trip and just want to hop on and start a new character.
Hmm. Assuming I don't care for online play due to the RMA and the fact that I don't like Hardcore, explain to me what my motivation is for buying a product with DRM designed to shit on paying customers again? I mean, half the time I play SP games it's because I want something to play in my MMO downtime due to SPECIFICALLY the "online only" feature of MMO's. o.O
I'll have to stick with Torchlight and wait for Grim Dawn, I guess.

Ah but thats what message boards are for, to allow people to express their opnions about whatever they hold dear. And while I don't agree with many opinions I respect everyone's right to their opinion (even if their wrong cuz I'm always right)...
Without all these differing points of view we would be almost as useless as Congress...
I never said they shouldn't be allowed to do so. I'm all for freedom of speech. That said, flaming thrednaughts that come up with nothing useful don't accomplish a lot. But I do agree, they're terribly amusing.
I voted for "its better this way", this isn't the first game that wants you to be online (hello quite a few steam titles).
The benefits far outweigh the negatives in this case and i believe most people see it this way, at least those that spent a lot of time in Diablo 2 and had the economy/game ruined by dupes and hacks.
here a quote from dewpdoop which sums it up quite well
For those of you who aren't familiar with game development/how games work, here's an important fact: an offline mode would require all game data and much of the server code to be stored directly in the game client.
One of the most important things about having no offline mode is that the client/server architecture can be constructed in a way that ensure the client gets very little information, and most of data is stored server side. I imagine things such as items, all player related data, abilities, stash, etc. to all be server-side information that the game client (user) only receives the bare minimum amount of information. This makes hacking, reverse engineering, etc. much more difficult (notice I said difficult, not impossible), as well as trackable/detectable by Blizzard.
You may tout is as DRM, what have you, but this decision was not made to prevent "piracy." All signs point to this decision being made to ensure that D3 is as secure as possible from hacking, botting, etc., and to prevent Auction House abuse. And really, this is no different that Guild Wars, or (the old) HoN, or any of the myriad of other Buy-To-Play multiplayer only games.

So while a small minority may be hurt about not having an offline mode I think it's for the best for Blizzard and the game.
Oh, and I'm sure there will be a less legal way of playing offline if you really only want to.
