Along with playing as a monk and continuing the story of Diablo, the thing I'm most anticipating in D3 is gems. Why? Because with so many gems and the ability to combine gems as you wish and upgrade them to stellar levels, gems open up a new level of gameplay for me because I've always loved ridiculous goals; leveling up gems to their highest prestige is one of those goals. And, apart from that, they make an excellent end-game option for me.
Now, taking into account that the higher a gems quality is, the better the effect it will have on your weapon, I also want to know if there is even more incentive to leveling up gems when it comes to augmenting weapons. Which is why, along with leveling up gems, I'll also be trying to make the most powerful weapons with gems alone to see what possibilities there are when it comes to augmentation.
So, how far are you going to take gems? Are you going to use them to their utmost potential or are you going to push them aside with all the other useless loot you find?

Even in D2, its just part of my fun to gather gems, put them together and get better gems.
I don't know why. Its just fun. And I really like what they did to gems in D3 as well. Its just that, you know.. you collect them, and they get better, and you keep collecting them... simple and addicting.
Seeing as I'm sure Gems will be very valuable, both in strengthening your character, and as a trading currency I'll be picking up every gem that ever falls of my screen. Even in D2, where they were.. Almost useless, I picked up every chipped gem I ever found, I at one point had a whole mule of Perfect Topaz.. lol.

I did the same with entire mules just full of gems. I remember back when I played online, 80 chipped gems = 1 high rune. It's how I got my first MF gear. Back when one of the patches had just added a new cube recipe to reroll charms with chipped gems.
In D3 I said both because I will use them for powering up items, but also collect them for the future or trading. As long as I have extra storage, I will save every gem. Plus I've heard there are ways to upgrade gems with crafting mats when you don't have 3 of a kind.
I'm confused by the poll. If you are going to take the time to collect gems, why wouldn't you use them to augment your weapons? With the blacksmith being able to socket, you should be able to at Least place on gem in five different items. The jeweler can remove gems so there is no reason not to place one in a socket. So, why would I collect gems but not use them in items as well?

I don't think it will cost that much. Blizzard has said the biggest design flaw with gems in D2 was that nobody used them so they could hold on to them to upgrade them. They also said they want players to be able to put a gem in an item. When they got enough to upgrade, they can pull it out, upgrade and resocket. I doubt they would make it expensive enough to repeat the same problem they recognized in D2.
Off topic: I don't think respecing will be that expensive either. Respecing won't be a whole wipe like they added in D2. It will most likely be one skill for each use. I think there will be other limitations to it than cost. They have said that if you want to re-roll a whole new skill set, it will be quicker and easier just to start a new character.

I want them all! As high level as i can get them, into every item i use!
That's something i used to do in WoW with enchants and gems aswell. Same deal with D3. And since we'll be able to remove them from the items without consequences (other than paying gold), i'm sure to do so.
I will hoard them like a mofo. I did so in D2 and will certainly do so in D3.
The problem I had in D2 with using gems is that it sort of felt like throwing them away. Well, when you didn't put them in stellar gear that is. I mean, putting a normal ruby in a random rare sword is something I never EVER did. It just felt like a waste, you know?
Now with there (apparently) being an option to remove them for gold I might use them a bit more. But if I don't need to use them I won't, saves me money.
I didn't mean collect as in, "I'll save these gems for later to augment my items;" I mean "collect" as in, "here's my collection of Radiant Star Rubies that I worked over two months to create."
And, also, if you were to choose the "both" option, you could be saying that you would use high level gems to augment your items as opposed to augmenting as you go. I did a lot of that in D2 because I didn't see much use in leveling up gems since there were only five qualities. Now that we have 14 or so, I actually want to level up my gems to see the extent of how gem benefits increase.
For example:
A chipped ruby gives 5 fire damage
A radiant star ruby gives over 9000 fire damage
I want to see those benefits. It is very much a goal to collect gems, but I also intend to use them to augment my weapons once I feel comfortable with using them. Until then, I'll just keep collecting and leveling.

Ah well, I just like to collect all that stuff. My favourite thing to do in Minecraft is dig. Dig Dig Dig Dig: just removing stone all day long and hopefully find some iron or gold. Or perhaps even diamonds ^^. I don't do anything with it, but I like to collect them...
The same goes for gems and items. Since I've been using PlugY I saved all set and unique items I found. I just want to... catch 'em all? Speaking of which, that's my goal in my current game of pokemon blue (which I haven't touched for over 2 months but that's beside the point).
Why would you have radiant stars in your stash and not use them, instead displaying them to onlookers, like a teenager with self esteem issues?
It's not even that. I just think it's a good goal to shoot for. Taking into account that you need five of each level of gem to achieve the next level, you would need an extraneous amount of chipped gems to create a radiant star.
I mean, shit, at least it's not CoD.

Ideally I want to use gems but I'm a little worried they will end up being like D2 gems and really useful.
Mind you I may change this idea if i find you still need 3 of a kind to make the next gem up and seeing as only the first 5 I, think it was, actually drop I may ditch the idea for more inventory space. On a side note in the artisan video the emerald (little out of date I know) didn't appear to to have a weapon damage augment like in D2 i.e. poison. Any Ideas on that?

Where did they say that you needed 5 of one level to make the next? I thought it was just that, before, the highest level dropped was level 5.
As far as the OP, I plan on getting as many Radiant Stars as possible.
I don't recall they ever did say how many gems you need to make one of the next level. But it was already said that just 3 of each means it would take a ludicrous amount of gems. Only if you make recipes take 2 gems would it become in any way realistically achievable.
Well recently Bashiok said that levels above 5 will drop in game. He didn't say how many levels though, but either way it significantly lowers the amount of droppable gems needed, even if its only level 6 that drops.
If gems are going to be reasonably powerful, and they probably will be with 14 levels, then I can't see anyone finishing the game on hell difficulty without them. Blizzard will balance the game expecting you to use them.
Also it probably won't cost much to unsocket them.
Well they've said that Artisans would be optional, so it would entail that either you don't need to level the Jeweler to combine gems, or you actually don't need high level gems.
I could've sworn that I read that back in October.
Never mind me then. You'll just need a shit ton of gems to get those radiant stars.
I think Bashiok also said there might be ways to skip ahead a few gem levels with the crafting system. Say from level 6 to level 8 or 9 with one recipe, only one gem required. If they do this, the recipes will probably be pretty expensive or time consuming to limit their use. It's supposed to be an option in cases where you are getting really unlucky for a long time. Like if you have a level 6 ruby for a month and still haven't gotten enough other rubies to upgrade.
