One the Diablo forums, someone asked what would happen if they were to die in Diablo 3

Before I get in to what we are doing let me go over some things we want to avoid with a death mechanic.
We want to separate being in town and being out on a quest/adventure/dungeon as much as possible. Leaving the safety of a town should not be a decision you take lightly. We don't want to remove the sense of suspense and danger by making town something you're always going back to pretty much whenever you like. The intent is to create a greater separation from being in town, and not, and to make your time away from town a lot more tense.
On that same note we also don't want to remove the player from the action. Throwing them back to town for every death really breaks up the action, and not in a fun, interesting, or necessary way.
So, with these things in mind we've found that a check point system works really well. Throughout your adventures, and generally at the ends of each "floor" of a dungeon your character is saved to a checkpoint. When you die you're dropped back at the last checkpoint with a small amount of health, and the rest regenerates slowly. It's obviously a very forgiving system as it is. It's just too early to put a ton of thought in to what penalties there should be, if any, added on top of it.
Regardless, potential penalties aside, this is the death mechanic we're currently using and it's working really well so far.
I was thinking that if people just die and get sent to the beginning of the floor with the only penalty being having low hp, then some will probably just dive into mobs since the only thing they lose is health and get placed at the start of the floor.

Yeah but your party mates can't wait for you forever, and that is why it will be wise to clear everything on your way as you progress through dungeons. Ingenious.
I would like that exp penalty would be applied as well. I don't like the idea of Kamikaze. And don't dream about the value of gold in D3. Diablo users got used to the trade system the way it is in the former versions and I don't think this will change regardless the effort of the designers.
So you will just spawn at like a graveyard at the beginning of that floor? Doesn't sound like much a difference to spawning in town and going through a WP. Except, what if monsters were already crowded around the checkpoint...would you spawn-die like 5 times and then it decides to bring you to the one before it? Or is the checkpoint under some sort of protection? Sounding kind of lame.
Also he says they want more seperation of town and 'out of town'. Does this imply no TPs and possibly less WPs? Or TPs have a long cooldown? Or...? Could be fun to not always have the choice to just TP out whenever you want.
Let's face it. In 90% of cases people just restarted the run if they died because the chance of recovering your body is slim. This way at least the action can go on.
Somebody said anything about Town Portals? Portals are back, we've seen one in the gameplay trailer!
I have a weird feeling that these checkpoints are actually "neutral" zones without any monsters in it, and that it is also the only places where you can use a tp. Ever noticed the lack of mob in most dungeon entrances in the previous Diablos? Sounds like an ideal place to put checkpoints.

now that you mention it, that makes a lot of sense. I mean, why else would Dekard Cain drag along with the barbarian and wait until they got to the other entrance/exit area of the dungeon before using the TP?
if they did incur a death penalty like exp + gold loss then yea it would not be worth it to keep dying, but he said that they didnt want to add such things.
He said the way the checkpoint system works, is if you die, you go back to the begging floor of ur last checkpoint in the dungeon. What im wondering is, what happens when you die and your not in a dungeon? Where do you spawn?

I would help the homeless if i only knew where they lived
^^ at the beginning of that place or after crossing a certain section I suppose.
I just have 1 wish... that it won't be possible to do things like "countless Baal runs", they truly defy the sense of the game and take out a lot of fun...even tho going from lvl 1-80 in a couple of hours is fun but is definitely not intended.

The Diablo Series is one of the only games with such a crazy fanbase and no game can top that!
making things like boss runs finite will only kill the replay value. some games are 1 time through, good story games (bioshock), but they have no reason to keep playing it.
^^ I didn't mean to make it finite...I meant to make it harder to perform instead of 1 every 5 mins, make it 1 every 20 mins or something...so people won't "spam" them and leveling will have more meaning.

I liked someone idea that went something like...their are monsters that randomly spawn in a game, anywhere (almost) that are the only monsters that can drop a certain item. That would make it so people had to explore and fight things other than just the bosses.

Besides everyone knows the main reason Diablo is so popular is the loot. W/O many easy runs, this aspect would be much harder to pull of.
