not a poll. What is it that makes Diablo so awesome to you? what are those qualities that stand out and really appeal to you? What IS it about that game that makes YOU love it so much?
For me. its 2 things.
1. The story. i love the idea of a twist on heaven vs. hell. along with the bible its always awesome to imagine an ACTUAL war fought over human kind in the most epic way, the accounts(this is just my opinion) in the bible of the angels and demons for some reason are really fascinating to consider the text as actual historical relevance.ya know? and all the lil religious/biblical allusions placed all throughout the game and its story are awesome.
2. The style of Diablo. My very first experience was with diablo 1, walking in my friends house as he goes through the second floor of the dungeon. it was sooo creepy!!! i loved it haha! and the style didnt change in diablo2! it REALLY captured that feel that the creators were going for. I hate how some rpg's look, too..something..and diablo isnt like that, its look is pure classic for me.

I agree the plot is very intelligent and well written, hopefully D3 can keep that up.
And there is this kind of not to sound corny, magic I guess in playing the diablo games, theres just something about them that everyone knows is there but cant really describe. Its that feeling that will absolutely make or break D3 when it comes out.
my thoughts exactly, something about that game lol

What makes Diablo, Diablo to me?
Well... Let's see...
Killing undead, demons and beasts, checked.
Killing lots of undead, demons and beasts, checked.
Killing somemore undead, demons and beasts, checked.
Killing Diablo, checked.
The gameplay is unparalleled IMO. It's simple and brilliant at the same time. I think it's especially noticeable in the online play, which is where I think that Diablo II really set the series apart. It was brilliant the way it was incorporated, and it worked so well. Especially during the games heyday, there were games all over the place, players and in-game conomy were booming. Everyone was looking for better and better items, it was just awesome. You'd be fighting demons and fighting the prime evils, living the story, while at the same time competing to get better gear or discover an item that nobody else had gotten, or get an item and brag about it to all your friends.
A lot of games have tried to mimic this gameplay, but they don't have the awesome story and storytelling that this game has. I can't play a game and not feel like I'm doing something for a reason, other than that "kill this because it will give you stuff!" which is essentially what all the spin-offs are doing. Fuck that, I want to be saving the word and stopping the prime evils of hell and their hellish minions from taking over the world, WHILE collecting items and getting shit to show off, WHILE playing with a massive fanbase that's competing, and discovering new builds and runs, etc.
1- Gameplay: I loved Diablo from the first moment I put my eyes in the game box. From the moment I first played it I knew it was a classic: very intuitive basic controls but at the same time, very challenging to become expertised with.
2- Concept/Story: I believe these are the main reasons I love Diablo even though I put them in second. The idea of battling demons very similar to some idealized by some of the biggest religions was at the time the breaking of a taboo (in games) and at the same time a great idea. The way the storyline went was marvellous and actually could be truthfull (as concerning how they influence the world) if you took the way these religions portrait and empower these demons so in a way, making it a game to make you imagine it "could" have happened in our world.
when i first got into it, one thing stuck out after a few weeks: the PVP.
I discovered that i LOVED PVP, ive been GM, BM, and used hacks, and i love every method, from being nice and doing 1 on 1s, to being a total douche and using every trick in the book (and im talking 1.09 hacks, not noob shit in .10) against the "Top hacking pvpers" in useast.
no game has ever come close to the PVP aspect of DII in my opinion.
second, the PVE, if you want to play through you can, and itll be a blast, if youw ant to rush right there, you can, and itll be FAST, balanced perfectly (until 1.10...) imo
and finally, the last thing to draw my attention (sad to say but its true) is the story, after 1.10 came out, i read up on the story, and became a lover of it...its just so awesome!
I think the items and builds. You have quite a large amount of different builds per character that you can try to create. I was set into finding how many gfg builds i could do and I think i got up to 17 in one season.

Those before me shall quiver in my wake as I unleash the fury within!
For me, it always has been and will be all about the items. I've spent sooooo many hours running the same bosses, sitting in trade games, etc.. The constant drive to upgrade your items (even if only from +19 stat to +20 on an anni) was what made me fall in love with the game. I used to get so excited when I was lucky enough to trade an Um and Pul for a Mal... that would pretty much make my day. The tiny little steps and little bargains that I would be able to make to slowly build up riches.... man oh man.
Sure, the simplistic gameplay was a huge factor (else I wouldn't have been able to play it when I was in fifth grade ;)) but for me, the item system is what always had me coming back for more.
What makes diablo good for me is that the story and atmosphere is very well detailed and it fits what you want from a game like this. When I played this game when I was a little younger, I kind of made an emotional connection with the people in the town(Diablo1)s(Diablo 2). Those people almost felt like family. Maybe it's just because it's an RPG, but I made a correlation with those folks. I've never gotten the same feeling from any other game, except Grand theft auto.

I like the life I lived, because I went from negative to positive.
You know very well who you are, don't let them hold you down, reach for the stars.
I actually found the atmosphere of Diablo 2 really toned down compared to the first. Even going through the monastery to fight andy really didnt compare going to level 5 of that cathedral to face that damn butcher.
For some reason I think they wanted to make the boss with the malus to feel like the butcher but failed.. "I will make weapons with your bones!" to "ahh fresh meat!"
diablo 2 seemed a little lighter than diablo 1.. and im sure blizzard will fix that in diablo 3
ya dude..i dont think many ppl remember the first diablo fight NEARLY as much as tht crazy butcher lol, tht guy is so damn scary!!!there shud be like a secret butcher lvl in d3 wer u do the d1 part again for 5 lvls till u fight the butcher again along with a resurrected cow king lol. i would like tht
