I see a lot of the higher dps monks not using any Life steal on their weapons. Curious of how do you stay a live without life steal? I play a DH, but once i hit para 100 i am switching over to monk and bringing my DH's gear with me. So i have decent gear i will be starting with, just looking for any tips i am missing! Thanks!!
My guess:
High DPS farming low MP wouldn't need any LS.
High DPS just to show off on Diable progess wouldn't need LS.
High attack speed with LOH on rings and amulet could provide enough healing for mid level MP runs.
My Monk isn't super high end, Plvl 51, around 98k DPS unbuffed while wearing my Hellfire Ring (104-106k with my real ring), wearing only crafted and found gear (I hesitate calling him self-found, as that feels like HE found his gear, and it's not true, some of his gear was found by others of my characters). He has a bit of Life Regen, but other than that, no Life Steal or Life on Hit at all. Zero. Not necessarily a conscious choice, if I could get some for him, I would...just haven't gotten around to it.
But I get around the survivability issue by leaning hard on the Transcendence passive. I've tried going without it, I suppose I could if I used lots of potions, but I really like Transcendence.
From what I've seen of Monk profiles out there, barely anyone uses it, but I've found it really fun to keep my Spirit nice and high, bashing away on enemies while managing high Spirit Spenders to fuel Transcendence and keep healthy. Much of the time, for me, it ends up being a race as I watch my Life orb go up and down, especially when fighting elites that lay down Molten trails or Plague pools, add in a bit of careful retreating, sometimes even kiting if I'm feeling bold and threw on Pillar of the Ancients for strategy.
Obviously, if Transcendence is a way you might consider going, you'll have to make sure you generate a lot of Spirit, and keep enemies at bay long enough to generate more. One of the cooler methods I've found (I discovered it myself, but I didn't invent it or anything, others came up with it first) is using Way of the Hundred Fists - Fists of Fury while buffed with Breath of Heaven - Infused with Light. Even a larger Spirit Gauge with Exalted Soul will fill to the top in only a second or two (especially if you have high attack speed), giving you plenty of Spirit to spend to get Life back with Transcendence. It's not 100% reliable (sometimes it poops out and you don't get ALL your spirit back), but it works most of the time, best when you're either surrounded or have a few enemies in front of you at a time since Fists of Fury has a small (but noticeable) area of effect. But there are other ways to get more Spirit.
My Monk carries a Skorn with almost 500 Dex, so if you get a good 2hander, Guardian's Path combined with the Templar's Inspire skill helps generate a small amount of Spirit much quicker to at least get one high Spirit spender to fire and give me a jolt of Life and maybe enough time to regroup. Mantra of Healing - Circular Breathing and Sweeping Wind - Inner Storm are also good together, especially if you're using Exalted Soul. When Inner Storm is stacked to 3, those three skills together give you 7 Spirit Regen per second, which doesn't sound like a lot, but if you choose some effective Spirit Generation techniques, it all comes together well.
Also to keep in mind, the Inna's Set Bonus on 4 gear pieces gives an extra 10 Life per Spirit Spent, so that will definitely help when I find more Inna's pieces. HOPEFULLY, if Blizzard somehow makes rare Daibos viable enough to compete with my Skorn, I'd love to get one with Life Steal AND another 50-60 Life per Spirit Spent.
Anyway, sorry for the rant, but I couldn't help but throw my insight into the ring. Hope it helps.
If they are not using any life steal at all, there's pretty much one reason. They are diabloprogress chasers, just trying to get higher rankings there. Which is pointless to me.

Maybe you didn't see my wall of text? I feel like my Monk is doing fairly well with only found and crafted gear on, and I'd hardly consider my Monk's progress "high end" yet. I'm no ranking chaser, I'm just doing what works for me.
Transcendence still allows me to survive in MP6 and 7. A few more good gear upgrades and I'll be hitting the higher MPs. :-)
Cardinal u should stop giving your opinion on things. That is all.
Now for the more rational part of the thread.
If someone has 400k dps unbuffed or smth ( monk ) and no life steal, its pretty much just diabloprogress chasers. They actually have 2 LS weapons, or just 1 but when they log out they log out in full dps gear.
The problem with diabloprogress chasers has bugged me for a while. I want to compare my monk to a top geared monk that wears gear that he actually uses to play. I'm not looking for advice on how to gear myself because I know, I just simply want to see the stars so I have something to aim for. And I'm curious to see. I have around 200k character pane dps unbuffed. The highest dps monks on diablo progress have like 500k unbuffed dps, but no LS, maybe ~500 LoH, no LaK, no more AR than me, etc. Do they simply use orbs then, or are they indeed chasers that never play the account? I can see how with 500k dps you can down enemies in MP10 and still live off of globes, no?
So anyway, can someone link me a unbuffed 300k+ dps monk with a set of gear he or she actually use to play with, and possibly if someone has such a character themselves, they could comment quickly on their strategy for staying alive (saying "I use globes" or "I die all the time" would be of sufficient depth)? Would be awesome.
Preach you can take a look at mine if you like. It's the normal gear I run with. Dual LS, 638AR, 53k life, 301k unbuffed. I've been considering dropping that EF but i'd lose at least 10k with any rare I can afford.

Do any high mp Ghom fight (its quick, right next to way point in quest 3) and see if you can sustain without LS/Loh. You can't.
