Whats the point of a monk when you a have a paladin or a crusader ( a highly god fearing class MADE for fighting).
Sorry guys but lets think here. Monks (nor Buddha) fight.ever. now stop trying to contradict their relgions
What are you on about? Monks fight in many fantasy games.
This has nothing to do with Buddhism, that was a different thread. I'm not trying to contradict anything. Martial arts is for self defense, and if the world is in danger of eminent undead and demonic Armageddon why WOULDN'T the monks that worship whatever faith stand up and fight?
And monk rather than Paladin to mix things up a bit, we've already had a holy shield class.
Monks - don't - fight (Monks are peaceful and against violence- sorry to you bullet proof monk fans out there) and any game that has a monk class ( guildwars) usually is boring. and Diablo3 isn't going to be boring.

Well, I guess there really isn't any other name for it. I don't know why it bugs me, really. It's kind of one of those unexplainable things.
It would be good, though, if you could be successful with the character if you focused on a single aspect. Like, it should be diverse enough to function as a casting-only, melee-only, or combination character. Why? Well, I just like casters, and that's my opinion
Who wouldn't want to see holy magic flinging all about, casting down the minions of evil at every turn?
Psh, no one

This isn't real life. Monks have been used in DnD and RPG games for countless years- they are different than their real-world counterparts and will stay such. So, let me reiterate that- these are not based on RL monks.
And if they're boring to you, well, that's your opinion. Don't degrade other people's ideas unless you actually have a factual basis to back it up.

I don't think you're getting it, this is a fantasy game. Like Magistrate said monks have been used in many fantasy games. Even DnD. If you find them boring, then that's your style. You must not have liked assassins either because they used Martial Arts.
fighting, cutting themselves and threatening to set themselves on fire doesn't sound peaceful.
Very nice a video showing how monks should be on Diablo's side.... but not on ours.

This idea just makes me think of Jade Empire, which in turn makes me think of it's upcoming sequel (Jade Empire 2). God I want Jade Empire 2.. The first one was such a fun game, first oriental themed RPG I can think of with martial arts and demonic transformations., but I suppose I'm just getting lost from the topic, lol.

If you're not going to provide a valid logical reason as to why this idea wouldn't work, you can feel free to leave this discussion at any time and just say you don't like the idea.

Not all monks are peaceful, especially in games.
I dont think your getting it. they ARE boring. Their monks.
how can u say i dont think martial arts? and assasins? your not reading correctly.
assassins actually know fighting martial arts.
Most monks don't, they Strive for quiescence of body, mind and intention, using Taijiquan
Shaolinquan leap monks are only trained in strength and force to help boost stamina to keep healthy.
get your facts straight then contiue to talk. Im glad blizzard wont be implementing the monk class in Diablo3
Hail Paladin the proper and logical holy warrior.

Umm... I like the aura, healing stuff but im not a big fan of the staff tree and the name is a little too generic imo but it's definitely an idea which we could build upon!
You know when a child is growing up how things that they first hear are the most dominant in their thoughts? Like, for instance, if a child has heavily racist parents, that will leave a permanent psychological impression on him/her? Well, at least for me, the first time I ever heard the word "monk" was in a Catholic monastic light of view- the bald guy in a robe that fasts for a month in a dark abbey translating Bibles.
Now, of course, I know there's other kinds of monks. However, that will leave a permanent subconscious footprint on me so that, even though I know there's another truth, my opinion has been saturated, already. Does that make any sense? Because I don't think it does. Oh well

In your nonfactual opinion, which, while not wrong, cannot be forced on other people.

I don't think you're getting it, this is a fantasy game. Like Magistrate said monks have been used in many fantasy games. Even DnD.
We're discussing FANTASY monks, who study to obtain complete perfection of mind, body, and spirit. Who worship whatever god the fantasy setting allows.
Such as DnD monks who had the quivering palm technique and could stop someones heart with it.
It's not like there were ACTUAL martial arts assassins in real life either.

The monk in guildwars was the only class which could solo high level areas.... also they were exremely not boring in PvP, to be a good Monk you need to be on your toes the entire battle, it was actually my favorite class because of the fact that without you any team would be useless and just having a good monk could make a team really good.
I think a monk class could be awesome in Diablo, they could have holy skills which either kill or prevent killing, just as the Paladin. I think monks could easily replace the Paladin...

Dream as if you'll live forever, and live as if you'll die today. "James Dean"
since were looking at a martial arts/holy character, why not have a Samorai/ninja influenced character
Have a stealth tree/ assassination tree
Have a holy tree/ defensive tree
and combat tree/ specific weapons skills
Specific weapons can include:
Katana
some sort of double bladed sword
daggers/knives
polearms
throwable weapons
etc.
There could be some badass death animations for monsters like cut a monter across the belly and entrails just fall out.

Well to be fair monks are ascetic. Which means in practical terms that they foolishly believe that the pleasures of this life are irrelevant and useless, and the most devoted of them wouldn't care one whit if this entire planet was destroyed tomorrow. They'll be "attaining nirvana" or some shit in the afterlife anyway.

Definitely, the monk was the lowest class of the Catholic Church. I have no idea why he would essentially be an assassin.
It's the decisions you make when you have no time to make them that define who you are.
Well Asian monks practice martial arts and staff fighting. So maybe think of the Asian influenced ones instead.
Not that there is an Asia or Catholic church in Sanctuary anyway.
Not all Monks are Catholics?
