Hmm, I seem to have forgotten what clan my ancestors were in *sends email to dad*.
Oddly enough, my brother and his wife can trace their families back to the same clan. Everyone is related if you go back far enough, but it seems kind of odd that they can see just how far back they need to go before the family trees connect.
Yeah, when we first found out I teased them about it plenty.
I heard back from my dad and apparently there are several clans we're related to, but the most prominent ones are the McDonnels of GlenGarry (not MacDonalds) and the Lemmons.
So, my ancestors were a part of a big christian tribe in the middle east, 300+ years ago. That tribe "ghasanians" or something like that, got split up into several tribes, one of them was "khlefians". The Khlef tribe traveled all over the middle east untill it arrived in northern Palestine 300 years ago. They settled down on a hill that was near a main road that went to the northern part of Palestine, and mainly to Nazareth, and then to Lebanon and Surya. The tribe's main income was the acts of thievery, mugging whoever traveled north. After 100 years they finally went to Nazareth and settled down there. My grand grand grand grand father built one of the big churches in Nazareth. And the Khlef tribe got split up to 3 families which exist till today. One of them is Rizek which is my family name and which means a gift or a blessing from god. In 1948, there was no battle in Nazareth and although some of my family got stuck in Jordan and Lebanon (because the borders got closed on them) most of my family stayed in Palestine and became Israelis. So, i got born in Israel and i have an Israeli nationality but as you can see, im a Palestinian christian Arab living in Israel. Oh and im a human being too xD
By the way, i got family in Lebanon, Surya, Jordan, USA, Canada, Trinidad, Chille, and uhmmm i forgot. But mostly in the US.
I didn't like Highlander when I saw it. (The movie that is). It bothered me that Sean Connery - the only Scottish actor with an important role - played a Spaniard.

For such a small country - 2millions only is quite impressive for thousands of people to travel along with their team and cheer them up.
Canada is hockey country, so are we. *Stands proud*
I wasn't saying you aren't good fans. Just not the best.
Oops I forgot to unsubscribe from this thread...and I got the emails and read them. Amusing to say the least.
Man, nationality itself is quite a ridiculous concept but ancestry? Now that takes the thing to a whole new level.
I remember my gran-dad going on about the purity of our lineage. I was 15 back then and my brain was working and so...I just laughed at him. I really did.
And the next best thing happened- he laughed with me, ruffled my hair and told me to keep my head straight and the same attitude.
I suppose he must have been offended a little bit anyway, but he was a man who lived in his time and fitted to perfection the image I had of what a wise grandparent should be.
And so he is dead now and I do miss him.
My parents themselves never cared about ancestry though their marriage was actually sealed by looking up my dad's ancestry. Mum has 'higher' and purer' blood/heritage apparently.
I am almost sure that ancestry doesn't really matter to any of you, but it still amused me seeing you all bang on about clans, tribes, heritage and lol royalty.
Must be pretty cool all that stuff.
So while I have been told a bit of my own ancestry, I never bothered looking up the details. I do not see how it is relevant in a time where most countries are withing reach from the rest of the world.
Still, I had a few friends who did bother. One found he was actually descendant of slaves from the early 1800's. Must be cool they kept records of the good slaves from back then. Anyway the guy was disturbed by it all. Yep...even ashamed.
Being a naturally cruel bastard, I seized the opportunity to actually make fun of him...and lo and behold, the guy was actually deeply offended. And pity not being one of my best attributes, I didn't stop. I was unbelievably entertained. Yes I was and not least because two other people having the same ancestry as our poor victim were actually making fun of him. These two people really didn't give a fuck about their ancestry.
So I have met people who looked it up and were ashamed of their ancestry, people who looked it up and were somewhat proud and others who looked it up and did not care. And last some who just didn't give a fuck at all.
I guess I met all the possible categories there.
Of course if someday the definitive link is made and we all discover we come from the same monkey bitch, and there were ways to retrace further up our bloodline I betchya that people will still find some stuff to rant about.
Ya, my monkey-clan invented the first hammer.
My monkey-clan had the most powerful and ambitious monkeys.
Or my monkey clan were the toughest warriors and could survive by eating their own poop.
So 'beautiful' the ways that we try to make ourselves stand as unique.
Wow that was a long post.
Oh before I forget, Jet, your reason for not liking a movie must rank among the top 5 of the most ridiculous reason I have ever heard.
Maybe Sean Connery realized he's an actor before he's a Scottish.
How could he play a Spaniard though? Outrageous. Oh please give me a break...

K.. You do realize that was not the reason I didn't like the movie, yeah? Just something I have always thought was odd about it.

Errrrr....really? There must have been some invisible lines between you not liking the movie and Connery playing a Spaniard. My bad, my bad.

PS: Nice crazy-person rant, thar.
Oh thank you. The monkey-clan reference must have hit hard.
I'm in a generous mood today, so I'll offer a translation from crazy-rant to maybe-understandable rant.
The reason my grandparent and parents are mentioned is that they are all the 'ancestry' that matters to me. My roots and origins do not go further beyond for two reasons-
1. I know/knew these persons personally and know their true worth.
2. They took a direct part in bringing me up and instilling the values and morals by which I live my life.
Now what is person looking for by searching his ancestry? Most want to see a famous/prestigious name somewhere in their blood line. Others are just curious.
Both pretty pathetic reasons, according to me.
You are curious about someone who lived way before your time and who you don't know what they really were as a person? Who won't influence your life except maybe give a little boost to your ego or as in the slave-descendant case make you feel ashamed...
You live right here and right now. Spend time knowing people around you rather than than learn about people 100 years before you. Btw, this not an advice, just MY VIEW on this matter. I am not telling you what you should and should not do but rather how foolish you seem to me just like how I appear crazy to you.
I still respect you and all the users and posters in this thread. And I still find the ancestry part pretty pathetic.
History is not irrelevant. It's such thinking that gets the world into a lot of the trouble it is. Learning from our own history is incredibly important. If people spent less time living only for the moment (and I do stress only) and spent a little more time reflecting on the past, I think we'd be a little better off than we are right now.
Still, you're entitled to the opinion, and this thread is not meant for the debate of whether or not ancestral history is important, so let's cut it off here now that we've both had our say on the matter. (Unless you'd like to start a new thread, that is).
PS: I guess I just assumed people wouldn't think I was that shallow about liking a movie / not liking it. For the record, there are many movies with Sean Connery in it not playing a Scottish character that I like. The thing I didn't like was the fact that he was the only noteworthy Scottish actor and was one of the few people not playing a Scottish character. It just felt odd to me and was, admittedly, one of the things that turned me off from this movie.
We can learn a lot about the history of our race indeed. We should.
However, what extra wisdom you will gain if you knew you were related to Hitler or Mahatma Gandhi eludes me.
Learning of history and retracing your bloodline are two very different things in my mind.
But this is indeed a discussion for another thread.
And I was never thinking along the lines that your reason for disliking the movie might imply shallowness on your behalf, friend. Just to clear any possible misunderstanding.
Peace out.
