Well I have just spent some time looking for d2 clones since I'm ready to quit d2 again (again for the 10th time). I played titan quest and it was pretty good but ill probably start up guild wars again for a little while. anyway thats not why i made this thread
I was just looking through screenshots for these d2 clones and thinking that they must have all been high on crack when they decided it looked good and was laid out well. I've been pretty critical of blizz about even small things in d3 because i know they are capable of the best.
All said and done, blizz has never been pressured to release something until its good and ready. something other game devs obviously have experienced since i cant figure out any other reason to release the garbage that they do. so let this be my formal hurrah for blizz since from here on out it will prob just be bitching and moaning until release.
Thank you blizzard!

Apparently freezing yourself is fatal. HOW ARE YOU PEOPLE COPING?!
Just wanted to say (since you made this thread already), some people on here do not agree with you on the definition of Diablo clone, and some also enjoy and play the games you call Diablo clones, even like them more than they like Diablo, and do not consider them pieces of crap.
Me being one of those people. I understand this is a Diablo forum so everyone is madly in love in Diablo, but you should still be careful about putting down other games that some people like just because YOU don't like them and it would be wise to NOT attribute YOUR preferences or the preferences of a large part of this forum to ALL Diablofans of all types.
Btw, low quality of certain "clones" does not make Blizzard look better or worse in my eyes. I don't really compare games between games (doesn't really work), I look at the enjoyment of an each individual game.

Ofcourse comparing games between games works, it works perfectly. You look at the enjoyment. Someone else looks at the graphics and another one at the lore. Why would anyone a clone of diablo. Which has better graphics, but terrible gameplay. When they don't give a crap about graphics. You will get little enjoyment of this game, and thus you wiill step back or forward to other games which have more enjoyment(COMPARISON).
Titan Quest plays really good in singleplayer (havnt tried multi). Well worth the effort of trying ot out once.
There are ofcourse other games that classify as a clone. Sacred2, personally i find game really bad.
Blizzard, and their nearly 10 year old game beats every game in its genre. And probably will until D3 releases.
Thank you Blizzard!

Enjoyment depends sorely on your subjective view of a game. Except people don't realize that. They start taking elements and saying how they're "good" or "bad" and not realizing those elements are subjective, and often those very people are biased towards DII elements and unable to accept anything different on new, sometimes not even seeing it.

Opinion. Gameplay is subjective. If a game has different gameplay than that of Diablo but same genre, chances are, you're not going to like it.

I don't even know what you're trying to say here. You may or may not enjoy any other game, it's irrelevant. I do not come back to old games that much when I'm disappointed in new ones, I honestly just drop gaming all together and wait.

Sacred II is not a clone. Diablo fans do not like Sacred precisely for that reason. It's so different in every aspect.

I disagree. I think Nox is much better than Diablo II, from circular releases, and I enjoy playing SII more because it, I believe, functions better as a conveyor Hack&Slash in SP (whereas DII's SP is undersupported).
Your opinion is just that: an opinion. Doesn't mean you can diss the games other people play or claim they are clones when there is no basis to your argument.
Yeah just that this is (as you point out) a d3 forum so...
On top of that, I have actually played most of those d2 clones and thats how I can say they suck. As for varying definitions, I dont quite get it. Its a game that was *strongly* inspired by d2. Titan Quest is probably the closest in that its almost identical but actually a pretty good game. You even have to collect 2 parts of a staff in act2. I could recommend it.

I don't think any of the so called clones are bad, I just have to force myself to play them through more than once. Where as when it comes to D2, I'm always rearing to go.

Alright, let me rephrase it.
If you compare a game with another. You might compare it in a way at how much "enjoyment" you will get out of it. Or whatever element you like in a game.
You're speaking of elements, and what not. If you play a game, and you don't like it. It's not becouse you refuse to give it a chance, or accept it being different. You just don't like it. And that might be becouse youre a D2 fan, and like the gameplay alot. Or it might be any other reason.
Basicly what you're saying, every other game is good in its own way. And that people should understand it being different and like it for that reason. Now thats confusing.

Guild Wars, huh? How long have you been playing? Maybe we can chill sometime. I don't play anymore, but that's because I have no reason to. All my friends quit.
Since release here, though. (My Warrior almost has his 4th year birthday present).
I was just looking through screenshots for these d2 clones and thinking that they must have all been high on crack when they decided it looked good and was laid out well. I've been pretty critical of blizz about even small things in d3 because i know they are capable of the best.
I think this falls under the category of "judging a book by its cover."
But in all seriousness, is that really all you did? You just looked at screenshots of some diablo clones? What clones may I ask? Perhaps "Diablo-inspired" would be a better descriptor, but I digress. Screenshots can hardly portray anything about gameplay besides user interface and perhaps one battle that was snapped for the shot. I just find it odd that everybody wants games to be their games. Perhaps the games you play must meet the standard of "every screenshot must be brilliant."
Anyways... Blizzard is able to do what it is doing because of its prolonged success in its previous games. Many other game producers either do not have the background experience or they do not have the time leniency or manpower that Blizzard does. Blizzard can afford to push back release dates and have ridiculously vast production times when many other second-rate companies must work to a deadline.
Long story short... I'd recommend actually playing the games you're rejecting before passing judgment.
[EDIT] You say that you have played "most" of the games you're referring to - perhaps you're just looking in the wrong places. Try Sacred 2.
I think I made it rather clear that "diablo inspired" gameplay would be a much better descriptor. Cloning implies identical replication, in which case no "diablo clone" is or ever will be.
Sacred 1 mirrored many more aspects of Diablo 2 than Sacred 2 does. I view Sacred 2 as an evolution - and, by the looks of it, Diablo 3 will be incorperating at least some of the aspects that were unique to Sacred 2 such as skill modification. Albeit the means of modification is different, the principle is the same.
Anyways, inspiration can make a game go in many directions. Sacred 2, in my opinion, provides a very similar feel of ultimate Diablo-style gameplay yet allowing for much more than what Diablo 2 ever could have given.
[EDIT]Quotes of Equinox are not canon. One can easily equate similarities between the two and make the "diablo-clone" assumption. It is based on perspective and I see many cross-overs between the two games. I also like the two as complete separate games. In other words, they can be treated as mutually exclusive but one may also view it as a clone. I prefer to see it as a mixture of many elements and you can take of it what you please.

This is one example of why being your own publisher can reap incredible rewards. It can really mean the difference between an ok game, and an incredible game.
I think most of us here can agree that Blizzard is one of the few game developers that pay attention to their games and fanbase to such an extent. Another developer that comes to mind is Valve, as they update their old games to this day, just like Blizzard is about to release a new patch for Diablo II.
