My favorite genre in all forms of entertainment is science fiction. This means that I can even watch a shitty science fiction movie and still partially enjoy it just cause it features outer space, starships, planets, aliens, etc. But this was not the case with Sunshine. Not only is this movie science fiction, but it was actually brilliantly done. This was not a shock to me, however. I think Danny Boyle is one of the greatest directors today. He takes very seriously whatever movie he is doing, no matter the content. But the overall story of Sunshine is not something that is contrived. It's a well thought out emotional science fiction which takes place around the 2050 about a star (our sun) which is dying and so a crew put together by unknown organizations (presumably an international government organization) to carry the largest nuclear missile to the sun and deliver it there, supposedly detonating it in such a way that theoretically could rapidly give birth to a new star. Don't take my word for the sciencey jargon itself. I'll only make it sound lame. The movie does a much better job explaining what the crew's mission is.
I totally loved this movie and highly recommend it to the rest of you. It's utterly suspensful. I don't use the word suspense lightly. It's a genuinely unnerving movie. One thing that makes it so suspensful is that many sci-fi movies such as really futuristic ones such as Star Wars and Star Trek make space look like a fairly comfortable place in which to operate. But in this movie, because it's not so far into the future, the technology isn't so advanced as that. And so when there are minor problems aboard the crew's ship, it potentially is a very huge problem. The cinematography is utterly gorgeous too. You might not think the subject of our own sun could be very captivating or mystical, but Boyle kind of makes the sun just as an important character as the rest of the ship's crew and it seems to have its own personality. You just have to see it to understand.
What's best about this movie for me, is that I know I'll watch it again. Which is rare for me. Most movies I just watch and then never look back. But this movie was so beautiful, suspensful, compelling, and even disturbing to watch, how could I not watch it again? The movie is available for rent now. To those of who you haven't seen it, if you're into the genre, you have to see this movie. To those of you that have seen it, I'd like to know what you thought of it. Minus the spoilers of course.
Haven't seen it.
Makes me remember some shitty movie about traveling to the center of the earth to try and prevent the earths middlepart from turning or whatever. (horrible movie)
Not that i think Sunshine to be a shitty movie though.
The idea itself that our Sun would be dying so soon is quite a stretch for science fiction considering most estimates of the Sun burning out all of its hydrogen is in so many billions of years from now. But the movies just takes a what if situation and shows what it could be like.

I hated the Core as well. The Core is a perfect example of a movie that from a science fiction perspective, could be fairly interesting if only it weren't done so shitty. The casting was awful (with a couple exceptions), the script was awful(shitty dialogue and one dimensional characters), and the overall direction and pacing of the film was just so inappropriate. Watch the Core and Sunshine and you'll find they are nothing alike save for the part about a crew trying to save the world.
Well I can assure you that the movie does nothing to explain how it protects itself from the sun.
Seriously though, they're travelling on a huge living space station and one half of the station is nothing but a incredibly massive heat shield that is always facing the sun.
So you can see that the ship part of it is constantly in shadow. Whether or not humans could sufficiently build such a shield from the sun with any mateirals found on Earth, well, that's where the faith in science fiction comes in.
Can't watch sci fi movies that try to take something thats completely impossible and make it realistic. Never saw The Core either because in all honesty, it's a stupid idea.

It's the decisions you make when you have no time to make them that define who you are.
