Im looking to buy a new computer for work and d3 but i have no idea where to start. So i was wondering if any of you computer literate people can give me a hand and point me in the right direction.
I wont be needed a monitor, keyboard etc.. just the computer itself.
I was planning to buy a MAC but was thinking i could prob use the money to buy a heaps better PC..
Im looking to spend max $3000AUD (approx $3.2kUSD)
Ill need it to run programs like MAYA and all the other 3D design modeling programs.
So where should i start looking? Thanks guys in advance!

I am unfamiliar with Australian stores, but I will look into ausy stores Asap.
A comp that would suit you is a
Intel i7 2600k
Asus P8Z68 Deluxe
16GB of DDR3 1600 1.5v RAM
Crucial M4 SSD
2x 1TB HDD
And the rest will be chosen once we find an Australian store... as availability varies.
Sadly, we won't be able to spend 3k on a pc... without being stupid... so you should have around 1.5k left over.

CPU and MOBO are good
for RAM try Corsair Dominator 1600+ 12->16GB
since u be doing other stuff, go for 2x1TBWDBlack Raid-0 (for storage) and an SSD for gaming/windows (here u want 120GB+)
for ur Card go 6870x2 or 580x2
for Case buy nothing else other than CoolerMaster (antec is aight too)find the model u like cuz all CM cases are 4.5****+
Good luck mate.
1000W+ dont forget (here u wana go Corsair)
If you are doing maya work, you should probably get a good workstation graphics card, Quadro or Firepro series. And you'll want alot of ram because the amount of pixels you can use is dependent on RAM. 8gb for me sometimes is too little, and that's when working in Photoshop on a 1920x1080 canvas. You can get the most ram by choosing a Xeon workstation mobo and cpu's, or a core i7 first gen which aren't bad at all and are still better than any of AMD's solutions. It is easy to get 24gb on a core i7 first gen cause of the triple channel memory. I suggest either 4 1TB Samsung Spinpoints or WD caviar Blacks in Raid 0+1 or 2 1tbs in Raid 0 then a separate 2 2-3tb drives in raid 1 for safe storage, with an SSD to boot and for games/ important work applications like maya and max. all should run fine under a 800W-1K PSU Corsair is extremely nice, and has load of options.

What state/city are you in? If you are in Sydney check out MSY and macotechnology.
I recently got myself a new machine (end of financial year bonus :D).
2600k cooled by a h70
16gb ripjaws
crossfired 6850's
intel SSD drive
I suggest you get yourself a nice gaming screen. I am running the BENQ 120hz 24" xL2410T. The 120hz is a big difference compared to a regular LCD screen. I used to do all of my gaming on a CRT (sony G520 @ 144hz) because I could not deal with the LCD delay but then again I was playing FPS games competitively.
My setup seems to run everything fine. The Crossfired 6850's seem to be performing very nicely for the price.
Regarding MAYA and other 3d programs: How big are the scenes/projects that you are working on? Is this your day job or is it just for a uni subject? I had to do some 3d modelling as a random elective that I chose during 1st year of university which was about 4 years ago. The dell workstations at the university computer labs ran MAYA with complicated scenes just fine, any gaming PC build today would totally destroy those workstations that we were working on.

Coolermaster cm 690 II Advanced ATX Mid Tower Case Black 4X5.25 1X3.5EXT 6X3.5INT *No PSU*
Got all this for about 800-900$ shipped including taxes.
I gotta say, I love my new PC. Runs smooth, runs every game in an appreciable way and didnt cost me 1500$.
IMO, SSD can be a great add on, but count 250$ for a good one (Crucial C300 and C400 are rocking right now and 128G can go out for 250$)
But for the rest if you idiots (not saying you are all idiots), don't suggest him to go AMD, AMD is currently crap, and is just out dated. The 1100T is easily beatin by a 2500k EVEN IN MULTI THREADED BENCHS. So.. in theory the 2600k is like 2 1100Ts..
Also, please don't suggest that 8GB of RAM is overkill, I mean in most cases it is, EXCEPT in any type of rendering programs, and modeling programs. Trust me, he will use 10GB using MAYA and his other software, and since he is using an SSD he won't be able to have a 10GB pagefile, so he better have enough ram. This build is obviously not going to be your average web browsing PC or gaming machine.
Also, unless he is doing stuff for NASA, you don't HAVE to choose a workstation grade processor, as often those only have 1 use. The difference between workstation vs gaming cards (or to my understanding) is workstation cards strive for accuracy/precision, where as gaming cards strive for speed.
I think that was well done, I was going to suggest he make a post there.
"If you are spending 3k you can buy whatever you want. AMD is just generally cheaper with about the same speeds and quality."
No, AMD is not about the same speeds and quality at all. An i7 2600 does beat the 1100T in all benchmarks, and it overclocks like a beast. If you're spending 3k you want a fast computer, and intel is the only way to go for the fastest speed.
I say you should sit on your laurels and wait for bulldozer, the new intel 22nm chips, nividia new range of graphics cards. Or basically: just wait a few months for new hardware to come out before buying. You don't want your fastest gaming computer ever to become not as fast as possible in just a few months. And with the release of new tech old tech becomes cheaper so that is one way you could save a few bucks. As this is a work and gaming computer you have to make a decision on just how much it's a work or gaming computer. If you're going to spend most of your time gaming on it then it's probably worth it to get a gaming graphics card while you're going to spend most of your time working on it it's probably best to get a decent work grade card.
I don't want to spend the time necessary to think about a 3k computer for you, but you should reply with some answers to the questions about how much work you're going to be doing vs gaming.

"A lot of fellows nowadays have a B.A., M.D., or Ph.D. Unfortunately, they don't have a J.O.B."
So so sorry for the late reply. Been super busy with work and all!
Well firstly, thank you everyone for your suggestions! They were really useful especially now i know which direction to start looking in.

As to work ~ gaming, i would say its pretty even. I do have a rig at work, however i am trying to make a computer a lot more powerful, capable of running a high polygon rate. Hopefully pushing 3million+ even though i know im not supposed to. With gaming, it would mainly be D3 or BF3... I dont usually play many games that require a crazy graphics card, although i would like to think that my computer would run it if needed.
So in answer to that question, i would say a more work related computer would be better since im sure it will still run D3 and BF3 on highest settings.
I hope that further answers some questions.
Thanks again guys! if theres anymore suggestions, please feel free to post them. Thank you so much for the time!
i will definately let you know what i end up buying. Maybe waiting a few more months is worth it..

I am assuming you are comfortable building your own PC? You can read more about it here: http://www.diablofans.com/topic/25644-computer-help-thread/

Have a nice shopping, I know I enjoyed mine
But if you are going to be working with graphics, then buying a "gaming video card" probably isn't your best bet.

If you are spending $3,000.00 on a PC and you go AMD, you are crazy.
Just trying to save a few bucks. *Shrug*
Also, Omega want's to take Hpnot1q's status as the new Chaos Dragon. Lol.
I think that was well done, I was going to suggest he make a post there.
