I re-subbed when I bought it in Dec, then I canceled again in Feb. So it seems accurate to me. I don't think it'll make Diablo 3 come out any slower though.
This display shows the average player activity per faction per week for the specified server. It only shows the averages from entries from within 'prime time' which is considered here between the hours of 6PM and 11PM GAME TIME. The hours are based on the IN GAME time, not EARTH time.
Well, it doesn't mention regions (well, it does show EU at some servers and i assume the rest is US - how about the asian servers?) which doesn't make it look too credible - at least globally.
But i do believe it's kinda valid since many people returned just to check the content of the new expansion (such as myself) and then went off again. I don't see that as a threat to the Diablo III release plans. On the contrary, if it shows something is that WoW isn't getting any younger. We (players) know it. Blizzard knows it. And they want to send some stuff to keep us (the ones that don't bother much with WoW anymore) interested till Titan is out.
It doesn't seem like that particular chart shows it, but I'm sure that if you looked at past expansions there would be a similar trend.
As Scyber said, in the 20th anniversary video they said they want their other other franchises to steal WoW subs, as otherwise they would be stolen by some other company.
Think of it this way, if a game (like D3 or Titan) that Blizzard makes takes 1 million WoW subscribers and sells 5 million copies in total, thats still 4 million net fans for Blizzard, and that also means that those 1 million lost WoW subs probably would have let for another game if they hadn't left for D3 or Titan.
I'd bet my left nut that the new MMO isn't out before 2018.

I'd give it 3-4 years to be released, depending on when they announce it. If they announce it in this years Blizzcon... it should be at around 3 years tops.
Too bad Paul Sams (COO) said its their next big thing after D3 will be Titan, so it'll probably be out after HotS or the toss expansion for SC2.
Oh, it will be out after them. Long after.
When are they going to announce/beta/release the next wow xp, anyhow? Any guesses on it? 'Emerald Dream'?
Emerald Dream won't come as an expansion. The Old God that was responsible for the Nightmare will be killed by the end of Cataclysm (it's Deathwing's boss). Plus, Malfurion is already awake. Only place i can think of is (yet another) demon expansion where we're going to explore the Draenei home planet (home to the Eredar now) Argus and even the Legion home planet. Return of Illidan (we're used to revivals) and to kill Kil'jaeden and Sargeras. Then it most likely is going to be "the end".
I'd guess they'll announce Titan sometime soon considering they've become more comfortable talking about it. If not this Blizzcon maybe the next.
As far as the next WoW expansion, I have no idea where it'll take place or anything, but they announced Cata about 10 months after the release of WotLK, so it could be announced some time this summer (aka Blizzcon.)

'Back to space' is probably a good guess. It won't be the end - they'll still do XPs at least until the next MMO ships. Ten is a nice round number.
Interesting yes, surprising no. I'm sure you'd even see similar patterns for content patches. When theres new stuff to explore of course there will be more people playing.

I watch that chart, and don't recall anything like the horde year-on-year dip in the past three or four years. I'm just wondering if the title has peaked in terms of market saturation - seems like I see an ad for wow on every third webpage. "Hey, granny, you're the only one left in the world that hasn't played WoW for a few years and maxed out at least two toons! NOW IT'S YOUR TURN..."
Haha yea I'd agree with you there. Everyone knows about WoW. It holds about 60% of the MMORPG market. And I would guess a more accurate tracker (as Don said, that site only records people who actually have that addon) would show similar rises and dips for every xpac and content patch. As the game ages and more people become more familiar with its content I'm sure the dips would become more dramatic, as less people would want to play after exploring whats new, but the overall trends would probably be similar.

I also wonder if the content itself is getting a little less inspired and focused as the senior folks move on to the new MMO. I definitely get the impression that B has put all of their new-IP energy into that one basket, making a culture already geared towards retreading decade-old ideas that much worse.
Well I don't know about less inspired, but, as with anything, more and more of the same universe tends to feel stale to some (or most). I wouldn't agree that a large, well, cataclysm that somewhat reinvents the map of WoW is retreading the same territory (as you probably assumed while you were writing that).
Yea I got tired of WoW. Kinda boring. 45 min que dungeons only to get fail group that does not get anywhere.

Honestly I think they killed themselves with cataclysm.
Honestly, they killed themselves slowly with WotLK and Cataclysm was the final blow.
They both made the game go down instead of up. They have some good things, but frankly they never actually sat down and bothered to work on so many things in the game that needs to be fixed and enhanced. Its still the same broken, limited MMO and has lost most of its appeal by now.
I'm not sure what this says about the global picture - but it could be a trend. How much bearing this has on :olddiablo:, we'll see.

Wow, quick responses! You guys are starved for news.

But, as a few have said, the methodology is far from perfect.
It just seems interesting that numbers are weak year-on-year just 3 months after an xp.
