From what I understand, SecuROM can send information to EA. There has also been reported issues from it.
Really, its as bad as any virus. Its put in your computer without your consent, is not removed upon uninstallation of the game.
It doesn't really do anything particularily harmful, most information that it actually sends is probably limited to simple things like your computer specs. Otherwise it can check for things like Virtual Drives and prevent you from playing the game if there is one.
Many problems have been reported all over, from program malfunctions to equipment damage. Most of it is probably just myths.
Still, its one of those program that just can "potentially" annoy legal users, when the funniest thing is, Pirate get through it once (and quickly), use a crack and they don't have to ever care about it again.
There is something bad about the program, otherwise there would never have been a lawsuit against EA for including SecuROM with Spore.

True story:
During the middle of the Sims 2 expansion wave, Maxis eventually had to deal with the whole SecuROM mess. It was also during that time when I had installed a notorious expansion that contained SecuROM. A few days pass and then my disk drive just stops working. It won't read anything at all. I know I can't connect that to SecuROM, but it does seem pretty sketchy that I install a game containing SecuROM and, within the proximity of a week, experience a disk drive malfunction. And my disk drive never recovered, it essentially died.
Edit: EA is a shitty company, but I will admit that Battlefield 2 is still one of the best FPS games I've ever played. I can never forgive them for what they did to Sim City though. Those sons of bitches...

I hate the way you cling to ignorance and pass it off as innocence
Actually if you look at the official thread again, it has calmed down after a bioware representative gave an explanation. Securom was used to check if the release date had passed, thus unlocking the game, and being automatically deleted afterwards. This is also a completely different product from the so feared securom-DRM.

I used to do trouble shooting over the phone for a ISP that offered PC tech support. Few months later I did Phone tech support for a PC manufacturer when I left the other company.
When Spore was released I did get quite a few calls on the ISP with customers not getting any support from either the game company and the pc manufacturer. The game company complained it is the PC and the PC manufacturer stated it was the game since the computer works fine when it is formatted and only has the issues after the game is installed. Most of the issues with secureROM is with the CD drivers but it could also interfere with other programs. Those other programs would either crash or have performance issues.
It is sad that a pirated version of the game is better than the original one.
I do not know of any equipment damage since the hardware worked after a format.

On Strike and supporting Fallout 4 Mod Makers
Some fallout 4 mod makers have had their mods stolen and uploaded and downloaded on Bethesda's site for the Xbox One.
I never plan on buying anything from EA. I do not pirate from them as well. Most of the games that have been released in the past decade did not interest me.

Actually Veggie50, what I read was that it DIDN'T go away after the release date. That's the whole point. And it was based on SecuROM, so it probably opens up most of the same security exploits, as well.
Some passive files (meaning they don't run in any way) were left in a temp folder. If the name on it was anything but securom, nobody would have cared, ever.

And a topic in the official forum clearly showing you that they are lying about it:

I just used a SecuROM removal tool and this is right, I had SecuROM on my computer. If the game refuse to run, I'll crack it.
This is illegal and they can get in trouble for this. And I sure hope that they do.
