Torchlight 2 had some really interesting things going for it, but going from Diablo 3 to TL2 just felt awkward. I didn't have the same control over my character, it was clunky and it just didn't seem polished enough. The itemization was cool and I love the artstyle, but when the basics are shaky, it's hard to keep interest.
I honestly felt like Torchlight 1 had better movement and combat mechanics (as well as overall better enemy placement and more meaningful density) than TL2.
It could be my memory playing tricks on me, though.
Nope, I felt the same way. The first 10-15 hours of gameplay in Torchlight 1 was among the most amazing experience I've ever had in > 20 years of gaming. I was just blown away, nothing could've stopped me from playing in these first few hours. It was simply amazing. Well, until you hit level 50-60 and find out that they completely forgot end-game, but it's a different story.
Torchlight 2 never had that feeling for me. It was always clumsy, cumbersome, somewhat strange. Can't say why, but after a playthrough I switched to D3 and was blown away, it's like switching from Space Invaders to Half-Life 2.
And yeah, like overneathe said, +1 Kaoskadosk. It sums up perfectly why you can bash Blizzard for so many things they don't get right, but the essentials of a game's core are just something they can master like no other company. And like he said, those are things you can fix, and their games usually last for ~10 years and not ~1 year like many other games. Besides, one should keep in mind that many authors of complaints about D3 spent hundreds of hours playing this game. 99% of PC games don't even get you there, they're uninstalled after 15 minutes.
Edit: Holy crap, two amazing posts here. I'm gonna bookmark Kaoskadosk's and SexyShane's posts. They should be extracted and put into a disclaimer before you even sign up. Awesome.
What Blizzard in my opinion always manage to do is to get the fundamentals justa right. Say what you will about World of Warcraft, difficulty levels, "casual-appeals" and whatever, WoW still has something that other games don't, and that's a flawless core. Combat, movement, interaction, it's all so finely tuned and crafted to the point where everything else just feels awkward. Whenever I try a new MMO, the first thing I do is compare the movement to WoW. Why? Because I've never played a game that has such "comfortable" movement as WoW, the fluidity and feel is just perfect.
And the same goes for Diablo 3, the core is fantastic. The visuals, the combat, the sounds, the feel, it's all there, and the other games just can't live up to it.
Path of Exile is a really cool game in terms of theorycrafting and class builds, but it falls flat in terms of actual gameplay. The world is dull, character movement looks awkward at best, animations are flat and combat is horrifyingly sluggish. PoE is more of a puzzle and a mindgame than an action game. The mathematical complexity is mindblowing (for good and bad), but it's not fun to play.Yes, yes, it's a free-to-play game and it has a small development studio, but that's just an excuse that players make to make up for the major flaws their favorite game has.

Blizzard have become masters at getting the fundamentals right. All the way from Warcraft to Starcraft 2, I've never had an awkward feeling when playing one of their games. Way too few game studios spend enough time to capture the essence of the game. It is by far the hardest thing to fix once your game is released.
Where Blizzard fell short is in the "superficial" things. End-game content, itemization, class balance etc, but that can be fixed. It is much, much harder to fix a broken core than changing the surface of a game. Diablo 3 has an amazing "skeleton" to build from and I'm sure Blizzard will get the other parts right in due time, just as they've done in every game before.
Thank you.
This echos exactly what I said earlier on in this thread, but you really gave better narration to the sentiment I was trying to convey.
All this 'sky-is-falling'....."tear it down and start over" bullshit is being taken too far, to say the least. The issues with itemization are not only fixable, but I would go so far as to say the potential within the area of itemization has a VERY high ceiling.
If they had goofed on the core of the game, the combat mechanics, this game would not have a chance.
I feel the next 6 months will be HUGE for Diablo 3.
I've never really understood why people watch someone stream their game play, especially if they themselves play the game. After I actually wasted 10 minutes of my time doing it, all I saw was people spamming for free crap or trolling eachother in the chat channels with the streams.
Both of these players are not revolutionary, special, or anymore knowledge than thousands of other players that just decide to keep to themselves or their group and not stream bull-crap all day. Finding exploits or playing builds that people have already made isn't anything special and pandering to the masses is certainly one simple way to generate streaming revenue. It's popular to hate on D3 I suppose, I myself have done it and I've taken breaks from the game simply because a lot of stuff about d3 pissed me off...and the other half would be because new games have come out. I think the changes I'm seeing now and the way their taking the game post Jay Wilson are going in the right direction and they seem to be taking user feedback into account much more these days.
Other streamers like Kungen or Athene (or pretty much the majority of streamers) spam their video stream with TOP DONATIONS and DONATIONS OF TODAY etc.
...
Athene spams his youtube channel with videos of Razer and other product placement rather than interesting gaming videos. You can even hear hidden product placement in form of staged conversations in Athenes stream between the characters behind the camera: "hey man, have you heard of X?" "No, i use Y, whats X all about?" "oh man, you gotta try X, its so cool blablabl". Its quite pathetic. People like Kungen and Athene also goes to the game that yields most profits, such as Leage of Legends.
I'm not a big Athene fan (don't visit his youtube, never even watched his stream), but doesn't he actually use some of the money he gains to promote himself even more, and such insane self-promotion turned into a crapload of money to charity?
Again, I'm not a big Athene fan, so I can't discern facts from myths about his figure. What I do know (99%+ sure at least) is that Kripparian never donated a cent to charity, or made a charity event. I wonder if he even buys food with the money he makes, since sometimes it looks like he barely eats/sleeps (very pale skin, tired eyes, sluggish talk - we need a doctor to analyse these symptoms though, I'm not one).
Take what you want from this, but i dont think its right to point fingers at kripp and say hes out for the money when his behaviour clearly shows that he doesnt care about it. Any smart businessman who wants to maximize profits would call Kripp a dumbass, he could easily tripple his income.
Any smart businessman also knows that as soon as they change their business from "x" to "y" he can literally risk years of investment.
As soon as a free informational stream becomes as ad crowded as your television, I'm sure quite a few people (many of which already don't like his personality at all judging from comments in the chat, but watch his stream to find out useful stuff/information) would simply stop watching/following his stream.
I doubt Kripp does that out of the sheer kindness of his heart, it's way more likely he's afraid to lose his only source of income.
Kripparrian was never about money, he never advertised shit, and he never called himself elite or claimed to be so. He shares his builds, his knowledge (even when he used to play WoW) and he gives constructive criticism about the games he likes. I just don't understand the people who are calling him elitist, money grub etc. because he's the furthest away from it, and ofcourse he has his opinions, but he never claimed his opinions were more important than any other player of that game, he likes to speak out about them and rightfully so, but to call him elitist just because of that it's a bit over the top. Get your facts straight before making judgements about people, and if you're judging him just from 1 video in the OP then you're not qualified at all. I never got the feeling that he's elitist when watching his videos, some of it may be sarcastic, but if you didn't get the sarcasm then its your own fault. Peace out.
PS. And no I don't watch his videos because I'm his fanboy, I watch them because he makes a lot of sense and is not biased when giving out criticism, he speaks the truth.
Well if you're playing games 24/7 and streaming them, you gotta make "some" money at least? How else you gonna buy bread? Just because he's trying to make just little bit in order to keep doing what he enjoys doing you're comparing him to a business and speaking of such things as kindness of his heart, money grubbing, maximising profit etc? Seems a bit harsh
You just completely contradicted your own post. So what is it? Does he or doesnt he make money off what he does??

What he meant that he has to make some money for survival and while he could make much more money he doesn't.If you think making money for survival is cash grab and all then you won't understand.
And also by survival i don't mean he makes money to barely survive against this harsh and cruel world. He makes enough money to live comfortably while enjoying games.
^^But that doesn't make him an authority in gaming.

Thats the whole point of what people are saying. He does this to make money. You said it yourself. He doesnt do it for free he does it to pay the bills so of course its about the money. No money means no "Living Comfortably".

This, plus Athene is a satire of all other streamers. He's essentially mocking everyone else and if you watch some of his stuff, like when his mother (or some other old lady pretending to be his mother) comes in and goes like "yeah you motherf****r" you should realize it's all just a show. Whoever takes Athene seriously also believes in news from The Onion. Besides, I don't like Athene either, but that's because of some other reasons. Still my props for raising more than a million dollars for charity.
Kripparian really *thinks* he is the best player and the only one who knows everything, while everything coming out of his mouth is pure crap.
Love him or hate him, mentioning his name draws flies like shit. You can't buy promotion this good. No wonder this website is constantly besieged by wanna-be streamer celebs trying to bribe people with frees just to watch them play a game.

I am saying that gaming is his job.And whenever you do a job you will want to live a good life. Its natural. After all who wants to live poorly even if they have the money to live a good life???
What i am saying is kripp could earn a lot more if he wanted if he did those razor crapfest mouse ads and all stuff. But he doesn't.
And im not saying he's great and all.All im saying is he could earn a lot more.I wonder why he doesn't do those stuff.
Look im not a kripp follower or something.Just stating the difference between those 2 quotes you quoted.

Sad but true.Even when people hate kripp they keep discussing. And when there's a long discussion going on no one can resist the chance to get his/her own voice in.
People should treat this the same way they treat trade threads about items they don't like. That is ignore.

I don't mind him making money. Never said that in my post, you did.
Could he make more money? Maybe. Could he scare off his followers if he tried and break his own business? Maybe. Do I care? Not at all.
Let's just not spread false truths about how he is such a nice guy for "not trying to make moar money", and putting him and Athene on the same spectrum - because they're not, whether you like either of them.
And he's hardly being judged by just one video (at least from the smart people here). His stream is all about his juvenile prick-like attitude, he seems to actually enjoy being an ass on all his comments, it's all about him praising his own magnificent self ("hurr durr I'm not even trying and I'm winning all dem races"), ALL of his youtube videos have that same "yo dude, I'm better than others" attitude. It's sad when you realize how many people enjoy that (not the informational part of his stream, but the "hardcore gamer" personality).
I guess you can't expect (or teach) humbleness someone that narcissistic. Whatever.
So what you're saying is that it's totally OK for Kripp to publish a video that bashes all Diablo players, but it's not OK for the people he took a shot at to bash him back.

Could you possibly be a bigger hypocrite?
They are not bashing the player base, but rather the game and blizzard, the video in the front page was also not posted by kripp =D.
Everything they said is technically true though, you advance faster with gear by playing the auction house because the itemization still hasn't been fixed yet.
Blizzard decided to nerf everything in inferno, you no longer need the Best of the best gear to beat Diablo. Barbs faceroll farm mostly everything with the most minimal amount of gear, which is the class both of these guys played( I love you barbs, but lets be a little honest here you do faceroll a lot of the time). They actually discussed how the game is salvageable, which are all points everyone could agree on.
Not sure where all the hate is on these guys, Alkaiser paragon 100 world first, he has the right to say whatever he wants about diablo3, as a customer and gamer. Every time I have ever seen Kripp he has some excel sheet with like a million numbers and equations on them, so I'm going to guess he has an idea of what hes talking about.

It is a dream that the greatest (athlete, gamer, entertainer, programmer, etc) is humble. It doesn't exist. I know people believe they are close to these guys in level of play but it just isn't true. What to take from this is that the greatest Diablo gamers have pretty much moved on. And why does it even matter?
I feel PoE is a much better game than D3 but I don't have a problem playing both if D3 improves. They've been taking steps since release but are far from what I'd call an enjoyable game. Every step they have taken is them admitting Diablo 2's developers did it right. I'm fine with that.
I don't know how people still play D3 or what else exists in it since Paragon levels were introduced. Does it have a social aspect? PoE does. I know Blizzard is working on it in D3. Broadcasting was way overdue!
I wish Blizzard would have just dropped the Diablo name from the game. It isn't D1/D2. Totally different developers behind it that had no intention of making a game like D1/D2. If this game was named "Fast Food Hack n Slash" I think it would have still sold and not had as much heat from the Diablo crowd.

It's not hate. There was clear contempt for casual players and Blizzard. He came off as an asshole. There is not a single thing he could ever say that I would find interesting or pertinent I do not care if that is just a snippet. What he and I want out of a game are completely different things. If I can play a 60 dollar game for a reasonable amount of time its a good game. If I play it over a thousand hours it is mindblowingly awesome because playing something you don't like or appreciate is moronic. He played it for more than that and he says how terrible it is. It is my honest opinion that he is stupid or has some sort of condition that we do not know about. I do not mind bashing him at all as he bashes others, he opens himself up to criticism by doing so much publicly, it is part of the deal.
So what you're saying is that it's totally OK for Kripp to publish a video that bashes all Diablo players, but it's not OK for the people he took a shot at to bash him back.

Kripp did not publish that video. I think this is where most of you are misstaken. You seem to think that kripp himself is making videos like this and starting threads about himself. What you dont realize is that he has NOTHING to do with it. Its OTHER people who are doing it. They are taking small segments from his stream, make threads about it, and people hate kripp for it. People accuse him of having a big bloated ego when he actually just sit in his own stream all day long, he rarely posts or dicusses anything on forums...its OTHER people doing it, he has no control of that.
What he does have control over is what he says when he is being video taped. He does have control over the level of contempt he shows towards the casual player. He also has control over the level of hate he spreads about the game he himself has invested thousands of hours into. But if he does not control those things then what more can you expect from his fanbase?
I was hoping for some mature discussion here about pros and cons of each game, but last 2 pages were about hating others and insulting people for whatever they are doing.
My last 2 cents. I would try to point out what i have learned from about 600 hours of playing each of this game.
1. There is a myth that PoE is complex and require allot of theorycrafting, but in return it gives you great freedom of builds. Which is obviously false, if you want to know why i would recommend you to find my few last posts in this topic. I won't repeat myself
2. PoE is developing faster, devs are more userfriendly and open for new ideas. That is half true. As PoE "develops" in terms of new skills it still stand in same place. For a few months they didn't implement anything that would change the gameplay. They add new skills but most of them are useless due to issues of melee mechanics in the game and how phys dmg works against armor mitigation of creeps. Also they did not change anything about mechanics itself, so even if we got like bunch of new skills they cannot be used on higher levels. On the other hand they are open for new ideas, they even implement some of them in the game not only talk about it and discuss.
3. Itemization is better in PoE. You got vast number of items to chose from and all of them can be usefull. That is false. This game base on RNG as well as D3 does. In d3 till end game every item is usefull, same with PoE. But at the end of the day, when you hit maps (77 maps) you will see that there are only few preffixes and affixes that are useful, and getting perfect item is same as it is in diablo. Require hours of farming to either buy or find the item (items worth 30 exalts are like Diablo 3 - 2 billion gold items, nothing else)the. On the other hand using alterations / regals / trans to "craft" your items is allot more fun than crafting in Diablo 3. This is what I miss the most from PoE.
4. PoE is for hardcore players because it is so hard and D3 is easy. If you lack excitement in D3 try going Hardcore MP10 all the way to Diablo inferno. It is way harder than building perma freeze / dual totem / minions templars and witches. In PoE you can die even on lvl 94 (hello Kerkrom) with best gear ever on lvl 77 maps, but it's same with D3. Getting freezed by Chargers in A4 with some -75% healing debuff and Succubus curse will cut you in seconds.FAND YOU CANNOT LOGOUT like you do in PoE. In PoE you just Alt+F4 and you are fine, nothing happened you are still alive. You can make the biggest mistake in your entire life and still Alt+f4 out of game to regret nothing. Diablo 3 is way harder and you have to think about what you are doing.
1) PoE is more complex than D3, denying it just makes you look like you havnt played both games. Not saying it requires deep theory crafting but its way more complex than d3. The amount of changes you can make to items and skill builds trumps d3 anyday.
2) PoE is developing more quick and while most skills are useless, they continue to add useful skills as well. Plus the developers are looking to be the best. Thats the mentality winners need to have. Always looking to improve and make sure they live up to it. Plus they add new items which completely can make a new build of some sort. Sure they might not be the most effective build but the added content is what matters.
3) I agree with you.
4) Youre highly mistaken and youve been watching a bit too much kripparian. Sure you can alt f4, but if you make a critical error you die much quicker in poe than you do in d3. There are higher penalties all around the game and trust me when i say this, d3 was piss easy. First time i played D3 was at release and yes i can link you my profile if you want proof of pre nerf inferno clear and i remember them saying that i will spend countless hours in inferno dying. I did die ill give them that but i think i finished inferno in a week max. Path? Heck idied in cruel, i died a lot in merciless.
Anyways im just pointing out how you are being biased towards d3.
d3 positives - WAY better gameplay and animations imo.
Well if you're playing games 24/7 and streaming them, you gotta make "some" money at least?
What I would point out is that if you play games with every waking breath, you will get burned out on them quite fast. Which is what I meant earlier when I said the average gamer cannot relate with him. Didn't he quit WoW, D3 and GW2 all in the same year? And with every one, he flailed wildly at the developer.
3 of the most popular games ever released on PC.......
Awesome.
Thank you.

Kripp's ego is loving this.

Whatever.

What he does have control over is what he says when he is being video taped. He does have control over the level of contempt he shows towards the casual player. He also has control over the level of hate he spreads about the game he himself has invested thousands of hours into. But if he does not control those things then what more can you expect from his fanbase?
