Just curious from any other players on the PTR that have crafted some of the new gear - its it worth it? I know that some folks have posted a couple of amulets that had a decent roll - but, over all looking for opinions on whether or not you've had success with some gear craft/roll or if its just a waste of time and materials.
The answer completely depends on the market price of mats which will naturally adjust to be more in line with the worth of the crafted items even if they are BoA. I don't feel like figuring out the exact math (requires counting all the possible affix codes, not just visible affix stats) but having the 1 guaranteed high main stat affix tremendously raises the odds that it will be a good item ie. 5 good rolls is much easier than 6 good rolls.
No, the odds are *not better*, some people are just extremely lucky, but the sample size is too small to make any general claims. There were some people who tried to pull off larger numbers and crafted a lot of amulets (like dozens of them) and I remember that their conclusion was "it's not worth it", because none of their amulets had more than one of the basic trifecta stats (cc, cd, ias).
For me personally, I'll use crafting when it hits live. Why?
-It's gambling. It's like buying amulets off Gheed in D2.
-The amulets will be better than those you identify from your daily loot, because of the fixed stats.
-How many amulets you need to craft will depend on your level of gear; but then, the crafting cost will (on average) also scale with what a possible upgrade costs at the AH. To get a BiS amulet with perfect quinfecta stats will cost you close to billions of crafting materials, but then, the amulet we've seen here recently - fake or not - is worth billions, too. If you have a cheap 5m amulet you're more likely to get an upgrade within the first 50 crafts you do.
-Crafting gives gratification. Well, it's a subjective feeling, but I personally feel better about an item that "I found myself" than "I bought this @AH". This effect is even better if you can say "I crafted this myself".
-Crafted gear is BoA. This is so underestimated. Many people probably won't keep BiS items that they found but sell them for billions and buy more upgrades for other slots. There is the AH game again that so many people complained about. Since crafted gear is BoA, this is not the case.
Bottom line, I'm not going to try crafting on PTR (would kill myself if I roll an upgrade THERE) but I'll definitely use it on live. If you're not up for gambling and prefer more reliable results of your playtime, like AH flipping or RMAH, then crafting won't be of interest for you.
I farmed for an hour on the PTR and crafted 15 ammys. Two of them had CC/CCD on them, but nothing to earth shattering.
What I find curious is that most of the posts that I see are people showing/talking about the new Ammys and not any of the other slots for gear. I got the Dex version of gloves (Monk here) and rolled a few. While I saw CC or IAS pop up, nothing along the lines approaching amazing trifecta stats.
I agree with @Bagstone - I will most likely give it a whirl on the live servers, since its something to do and use crafting mats for

Since they're account bound items, they should make it less "luck" dependent. RNG really sucks. They should introduce one for fixed affix. Something like "6~8% increased attack speed" would be nice.
Thanks!
