See, I keep hearing different things. Last I read, you were mostly IDed by battletag, but your emotes in the chat window used your character's given name. I still don't like this, but whatever. So... does that mean we can all use whatever actual character names we want regardless of how many others are also using it? Just wondering if I need to assure I create characters with the names I want right away, or if it won't matter since duplicates are allowed.

Believe ME
You are identified through your battletag, which even that is not unique. You just get a number attached to it for exemple Ayr1777. In game people will only see Ayr and not the number. So you and I can have enven the same battletag, we just get different numbers.
For characters their names are irrelevant, you can name them all the same. In game most of the time your Btag will be displayed. Your character tag will only be displayed in quest dialogs in the chat window. But everytime you speak or if someone hovers over your portrait/char they will see your battletag.
Yep. So character names are just for fun really and are not unique to just one person on the server. Which.... is disappointing to me in some ways, but in others it's good... since one will not have to battle to get a good name, and won't be let down when one they like is already in use. Hmm, even Battletags are not one person only, though? That is sort of crappy, imo... I mean, I get that we have a number after it to ID us (not that it seems anyone will see it to be able to differentiate?), but I still don't want to risk being confused with another JenesisX who might be an asshat. Aah well, no biggie.
Even though you are identified by the Battletag, I wouldn't name all of the characters the same. I can see myself jumping on the game to dick around after drinking, only to die and only then realizing that the one I was on was my HC character

Well yes you got it. For BTag not being unique its kinda the same argument, you wont have to fight but you can end up being confused with another guy. But really its a problem only if both of you are popular AND have a common tag. This quickly limit the chances.
Where the BTag is more annoying is when some people use the nickname of popular person and get more or less popular themselves, it happened in SC2 (pro nicknames used by guys in masters league). But its still pretty minor.

So in your drunken state you won't be able to see the name color difference of white/greyish and red?
OT: Yah I am slightly concerned over being mistaken for someone else.. but you do have the # portion to tell the difference if it came down to it.

Makes sense ?

I still want to use unique and decent names for my characters, though... it's sort of an obsession with me.
