Let me start off by saying that I am a long time player of Diablo 1 and 2 and a huge fan. What really immerses me in the Diablo experience is not only the horror lore attached, but the uncertain atmosphere that you live in through your character.
The art style of the environments can add a lot of fear, anxiety and bravery into the player, which is something that concerns me with Diablo 3. Looking at the "art style" if you will, the graphics...the game doesn't have that same horror appeal. And if I can be honest...it looks a little childish to me, almost like a cartoon. And when you have that sort of atmosphere, you can certainly expect some of the game elements to reflect their environment.
I could talk a long time about why D3 has some good fear/anxiety ..what have you into it. Just in the beta alone some of the nice gore/evil/w/e you want to call it, is very noticable if you just look. In the later acts (THe butcher SS we also saw) its even more so.
As for the art, I really think people should look at this
ive played the beta and i found the game not childish at all and foudn both the environments to look good artistically and the background music gives thema spooky feel. In response to the cartoony graphics all games have a cartoon element to them imo and diablo looks no where near as cartoony as world of warcraft for expample
Man have you played the beta? There's piles of corpses with blood spattered everywhere, the graphics may be cartoony but I've seen some pretty SICK cartoons. I wouldn't worry, this game is going to be plenty disturbing!
No doubt that the perspective of Diablo 3 is very different from D1 or D2. (not real spoilers, just big images illustrating my point)
vs.
i
The perspective is more similar to Warcraft 3 (i.e., everything is on a slightly exaggerated curve so that the buildings are angled slightly and not straight up and down). Honestly, I think that's the biggest contributor to the "cartoony" feel. (edit: I included a similar picture from Warcraft 2 so you can compare - WC2 really doesn't look cartoony at all, to me at least)
if you think D3 have childish graphix may be you should stop playing video games in your basement secretly and open to the outside world. it is time for you to see all the world's horrors and human cruelty in its pure form, you are mature enough now.
While i get your sarcasm... and I agree... to be fair you would need to at least do a NIGHT screenshot in WC3.
Sorry, I wasn't meaning to be sarcastic. I'm not really talking about the color scheme as a contributor to something being cartoony or not, just the exaggerated angle of the buildings which add a slightly "cartoony" flavor. Like they say in the video that Molster posted, it is a more stylized look (and a more modern one, as well) instead of going for realism. I added a picture of Warcraft 2 to compare how the different perspective affects that series as well.
Blizzard would be really foolish, frankly, to release a game that looked in any way like D1 or D2. Even the hack-and-slash genre is pretty outdated, so I'm happy that D3 is as true to its roots as it is, 10 years later.
When I was watching my girlfriend play a demon hunter and seeing her literally shoot the head off of a zombies body , with the head spinning like a coin. To punch a zombie and have its bloody skeleton fly out .
You have to be childish to be scared by a game, maybe you have just grown up?
Games like Amnesia and Bioshock have scared me, that's part of why they're fun. What exactly is childish about being scared by a well-made horror game?
Since when was Diablo 3 supose to be competing with Amnesia when it comes to scare factor? This is a Action RPG mate no dead space 2
I agree, I don't think of Diablo as a horror franchise either. Dark? Yes. Violent? Absolutely. But not horror, really. Demons don't make something horrific, the atmosphere does. Diablo has some creepiness to its atmosphere, but it's an action game.
Diablo 1 is at best a little tense because of the music and being most of the game in the dark but Diablo 2 really isnt scary. They were scary when you were 10 maybe but even at 12 when I played D1 I wasnt scared at all and thought it was just the best game ever...
Really I mean I really dont see how people can praise D2 for being dark and criticize D3. The only really dark game was the first. I even find D3 better than D2 because it has a lot more unique atmosphere and canvas background that are actually strongly stylised and detailed.
It's also not childish at all, there are still dismembered and impaled body. What can you ask more ? Brown colors ? Use the filter for that.

Well I don't have a basement, and I'm a war veteran so I have seen the "cruelty" that you think you know from watching tv.
I never said anything about being scared in a video game. Diablo 1 and 2 were designed to pull you into the world, and there is nothing to be ashamed about with following that path. It's like reading a great book, you get pulled into the portrayed world, all I'm saying is that from the video and screenshots, Diablo 3 feels different than its predecessors.

You are correct in your thinking anyway. It is different, now some smart ass will come in here im sure and post something along the lines of "Well it is D3 and not D1 or D2.". Combat is much more chaotic, and very spam happy. The feel of the game is less in tuned from what I felt compared to D1 and D2. I cared a lot less about my surroundings and the people in town opposed to D1 and D2, and pretty much cared a lot less about everything else compared to the others. Maybe it is because I am older now or that is just how they built it ha.

Congratulations on your trolling by the way, you really have done an excellent job. The more toned-down lead-in for your OP really helped, most people make it too obvious by hitting caps lock and going ZOMG TEH GAEM IS RAINBOWS RIGT GUYS LOL I'MMA BUY TORCHILIGT SCREW BLIZZRD. The title was a bit much though, kinda killed it.
A few pointers though:
1.) Try to establish the account somewhat before you start trolling, it makes it blend in a little more. You can see this with some of the guys that spam about 200 posts spewing verbal diarrhea before they make their first troll topic. The trick is making those posts subtler, like your topic was (minus the title, you really can't make the title a question without giving away that you are trolling, and it's too overtly inflammatory regardless)
2.) Don't counter someone's trolly basement rebuttal with an army vet claim. Rookie mistake, you lose all your credibility. Even if you were an army veteran, whipping it out in response to a cheap insult makes you seem desperate and defensive.
3.) Get an avatar, seriously, having a blank one destroys just as much of your credibility as your low post count. Makes it look as though you aren't established on the forums.
Anyway, good luck, good first attempt, keep at it!

There's also a thread on the official forums, and the general consensus is that using it won't get you banned.
Personally, I like it very much, even though sometimes the letters of the items get this ugly effect to them (kinda like a grain effect, all white).
This made me lol... But yeah, since when was the diablo series ever scary?
