If they announce a D4 it's gonna take more than 2 years before we actually see it. So no, there is no way there is going to be a D4 in 2019.
There might be some additions to D3 though like a new class some time in the future. Like early 2019.
It would be SO strange if they decided to release another expansion for D3.. It's been so long now since RoS, and let's face it, there are not that many active D3 players nowdays, so by now i think most people wouldn't be very excited for another expansion. It seems to me that it would be a much smarter move for them to start fresh and build the hype for a new game.
So judging by this, since OW 2 is unlikely to come so soon, i think a D4 announcement sometime next year isn't impossible at all
Diablo business model isn't about maintaining active player base because there are no microtransactions / monthly subscription fees, therefore the main goal for the company is to sell as many copies of the game during a release phase, as it is only possible. Note that this is a gaming company no longer, unlike for example Grinding Gear Games, Activision Blizzard is a corporation who has to satisfy its shareholders.
So from the management point of view, it's reasonable to create another expansion for a half-dead game, spend few $mil on advertisement and marketing hype and with a very limited budget steal another 15 * 50 = 750 mil dollars from the naive nostalgic players.
Development of Diablo 4 is very likely to be a reality, however, it will take them a couple of years, and it will surely be no longer a game which will follow a standard business model to which majority of gamers from the 90s and early 2000s are so used to - it will be either based on a monthly subscription or microtransactions (or both), and will, of course, focus on maintaining a healthy, active player base in order to generate a steady income (like other Blizzard games: WoW, HS, HotS, Overwatch).
I work as a management consultant and this is a common practice in the business to squeeze as much money from the devoted customers as it is only possible, as I said do not treat Blizzard as a Gaming company for gamers, it's an enterprise listed on the stock exchange and their only purpose is to make more money.
I liked this new patch and having more builds per class which are actually not only viable, but effective. But I have to say that the last few seasons for me have been a bit SSDD (Same Shiz Different Day). I have no clue if a new Diablo will be coming but I cannot see myself doing the same for much longer...
Well reality is that the patch has last a lot more than expected, but now is already winding down again. S12 is one month in, and chats and communities are dead city, with 20-25 mins trying to find/form a group to play. Even in my clan there is people that has already stopped playing as there is not much more to be done.
Bots everywhere also, it's an issue that as it has not being properly addressed, has killed the little life the S12 had. So for example in my case, i've moved to play other games: why?? Cause after a month of grinding and getting my monk/DH and Znec geared, it seems impossible to find groups to play, to push the LBs is useless if you are not botting 24x7, and the people it's already asking for 1.5K paragon at least to play in their 115-120s, otherwise you are not welcomed here.
There might be a D4 coming? Could be, but will someone or any of those nostalgic players, came back to it after D3? I doubt it very much. My two cents.
So u really think they would let Diablo 3 fail and die so they can make a 4th ??
That makes no sense at all...
Yeah. cause keep spitting in money on a game they gonna replace soon makes more sense yeah ?
I don't see either of those things happen really...
Thats on y ou. They have more or less confirmed it by the job listings they have done. They are not hiring a game producer with mmo experience and a love for diablo to bring diablo into the future. Only for a class or a simple expansion. Beyond all doubts that we gonna get a new diablo down the line
There is only a certain amount of things they can fix in a expansion. If they make a new game they can go an entirely new direction. They can't make an expansion where you lose access to things in the earlier game. So its gonna add on the game. Change minor things, but not change the base game.
A new game can change a lot of stuff, make the base game better. Make it great from the start. Which d3 was far from. vanilla d3 was utter garbage.
That doesnt mean its not an expansion. WoW has had 6 xpacs what is the point of a brand new diablo makes no sense plus in storyline all the greater and less demons are free now.
The job postings made it clear that they were for a brand new game, so yeah...
Also, releasing a new title makes a ton of sense, actually.
1. Diablo III is plagued by a "bad game" stigma ever since it launched - though subsequent patches and RoS expansion did a lot to improve the game, many people still associate it with being a failure. It's much easier to remove said stigma by creating a new title and giving the franchise a fresh start, rather than investing resources into a game that some people will always consider to be bad, no matter what.
2. They can't make sweeping, massive changes in an expansion. Sure, they may add content and new systems, but the core of the gameplay and mechanics would pretty much stay the same as changing it would not only piss off a large chunk of players, but probably also be more complicated than starting from scratch - which is what they can do with a new game.
3. The game is old. Sure, D3 still looks and plays really well, but in a few years it will be hard to lure anyone to the game unless it has better graphics, more modern engine, more robusts systems, etc. Putting all of that into D3 is - once again - not really worth it.
Also, comparing D3 to WoW makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. They are two almost completely different games with completely different financial structure.
