I think they will move the enchants to gems. I mean, greatly increase the amount of gems and what gems can do.
The jeweler also improve your runes if i'm not mistaken. Rune level might be more important to some builds then new items. But i really think the vats majority of players will invest on Bs first.
I hope they rework the gems, they sucked! they were terrible stats on them and i honestly hope they had a few, maybe give skulls back to us aswell.
D2 gems felt very limited and lacklustre. What I like about D3 gems are that they represent the new attribute building system, and they come with an extra useful stat (well +gold and MF is useful, +xp not so much). They shouldn't trey to go all crazy with gems, instead they should bring back the Mystic. She was the best part of gear customization in the game, and they removed her.
The reason? The gem system already represents that aspect, Bashiok claims. Gems have 4 properties, while the Mystic had 390 recipes. I don't know how that is an equilateral representation of the same mechanic, it makes no sense at all.
to answer your statement, yes the gems in D2 were lackluster, but that was only because of the Runes in D2:LOD. if you played just regular D2 for a long period of time gems were all you had and they were amazing. D3 seems like its going to be in the same boat! so not take a look at the D3 gems and count the number of effects vs what gems in D2 have, you'll see its almost half of those effects covered. Theres alot of gem effects from D2 i would like to make it into D3 life leech or or increased regen ect.ect. Not to mention there is only 4 color gems... Amethyst, Emerald, Ruby, and Topaz currently. i like options, other people like options, i vote more damn options.
The Mystic will be back, just not in time for release. We may not even have to wait for an Xpac either.
She, along with new gems, is probably something that will be going into a major content patch a few months after release, hopefully. Unless they don't have any ideas of how to differentiate her and make her "cooler" yet.
I thought that enchanting items with the Mystic was pretty cool personally as it was, but if they say they have ideas to make it better and more different than gems, then it probably will be worth the delay, as I said, we may not have to wait for an Xpac to get a new Mystic and new gems.

No, gems weren't that amazing. In fact, the majority of them received a large boost in LOD. I did play D2 classic. If I remember correctly, the majority of socketed items you saw were normal items, I don't think rares and uniques came with sockets until LOD. In D2 classic, by the time you had a perfect gem, about late Normal, you already had your pick of rares and uniques, which were more desirable than normal socketed items. In the circle of players I knew, almost none ever used gems.
Plus, this isn't D2 anymore, D3 is going in new directions.
Like I've said, what I like about sockets are that they are attribute centric, something the D2 gems were not. D2 gems were elemental centric, which I hope they bring back since the Mystic left us. The Mystic had a sense of controlled itemization, you chose what upgrades you wanted on which items, a niche the socket system doesn't quite fill.
With the salvage option going to the blacksmith, what's your thoughts about the jewelcrafter artisan? It looks like it became less interesting as he looses usability in so many ways to the blacksmith. Upgrading gems/runes, crafting sockets and removing gems from them don't seems equally usefull in comparisson to the blacksmith's salvage, immense recipe list, "gambling" (with the crafted item randomization) and the help that the blacksmith can provide with more interesting items for new alts and even your main as he levels up to 60.
Since he is “less” useful than the blacksmith, let trash hem, we can do without hem right.
Seriously what’s your problem? How can he lose usability when there are no changes to hem?
Probably he is getting more use because weapon enchant are gone and they will probably allow gem socket in weapon now.
EDIT - After reading more posts, now I understand your problem (1 artisan / account) but that’s just not true.
I will play the jewel with a lot of patience. I will probably worry about leveling my blacksmith throughout the game (while not spending too much recources on items until later in the game) and wait for the later game to level the jeweller. I will probably horde/collect gems until until I have a lot of them and then worry about getting the jeweler up to speed. I don't want to waste even low level gems on items I know I will replace in a few days.
You mean level up your blacksmith, then, at a later game, dismiss your leveled blacksmith to get jewler??? That will be a lot of resources spent to change your artisan (and was not even said how it will work to switch artisans) as you can have only one artisan per account.
And anyways, you will not waste low level gems on low level items as you will be able to remove the gems from items with the jewler, saving both the gems and the item for further use.
What’s the point of the caravan when you have only one artisan following you?
No you can level all available artisans (right now there are 2 of them, blacksmith and jeweler).
The idea is that your caravan is composed of your 10 heroes, 3 followers that help you in your fight, blacksmith and jeweler that provide service to you, Leah and maybe some other character that help you with your quest.
I'm a man who's way too lazy to go hunting through blue posts and all that, so I'm just gonna throw out this totally unbacked thought: I swear they said at one point that putting multiple gems in an object would lead to additional effects beyond what was promised by an individual gem. So like, Ruby does effect A and Topaz does effect B, but together you get effect C added in as well.
