Hey! I just thought of something. I'm pretty sure Starcraft 2's Warp Rays (Protoss) work similarly to Disintegrate. They steadily increase damage until a point, where they are doing max damage. I'd imagine that Disintegrate would work similarly, where even if a boss or mini-boss was trapped by your wall of 3 barbarians, you could only be doing max damage of disintegrate per second, instead of having exponential damage on the beast.
Hmm...good point on there being a cap, there has to be. Imagine some insane damage in PvP if it didn't. Not sure how I feel about all those changing colors, I'd say nah to that. The idea of the monster heating up and changing slightly could work or the idea of melting. That sounds complicated to implement in the game though, as are most things.
Guess we'll just have to see later on with more footage or when the game is released.
(Another side note from what GoldenCave had me thinking about Starcraft, I just got back from Japan and Korea last week and Korea has a channel dedicated to SC 24/7. Just thought it was funny, I recorded some of it with my camera too. Would of been nice to find if they had a Diablo 2 channel on TV since we all remember those days of Koreans playing. But would could you really do with that? ;))

The idea is cool, but I don't know. Personally, I liked different multicolor renditions of Disintegrate people have done. I have seen it in a nice violet with white hue and many others, I think it might have been here. The only problem I see with the beam changing color over time is, how exactly do you tell how long its been on each target? Lets say your shooting it down a hall of zombies, its hitting 5-8 zombies, but a few actually walk into the beam over time coming close. How would you tell that the first zombie you aimed at is taking more damage that subsequent zombies who have stumbled into Disintegrate's path. Would the color of the beam tell you only how much damage its doing to the highest target? I mean, the idea makes sense artistically, but it kinda doesn't. The beam itself isn't (ideally) getting hotter because its hitting a target longer, that target is just heating up more because the beam has been there longer.
Yeah you're right...
I though the beam gets stronger as time passes by, not because the enemey is getting hotter..
I would prefer a color chaging beam anyway =/

Well, if it's arcane damage why not make it purple?
Because they wanna give visual variation, even inside the same skill tree.
If you're a full spec arcane wizard and all arcane spells were purple the player might get the idea all spells are viasually the same because they are all from the same color. It's much more fun use the purple to kill smaller mobs, the yellowsh explosion to do some AoE and the orange-red beam to wipe out big monstars then use the purple bolts, the purple explosiona and the purple beam.
This is even more important in MP. If you're a arcane wizard expert in desintegrate and meet a arcane wizard that use more bolts/orbs you would look pretty much the same because of the constant purple spells. However every build must be individualized, both in gameplay and in visual, so give different color to the spells, even inside the same tree, is important.
Well, if it's arcane damage why not make it purple?
Because Arcane is not purple?
I really hate the idea of Diablo being colorful. Bleh, its suppose to be scary, goth, dark .... this whole idea of rays changing colors seems childish to me. No offence

Tell me Izanami, what exactly makes you think arcane isn't purple? What would you base your arguement off of to say that Arcane is not and cannot be purple? A real life example? The fact is, we don't have real visual magic, let alone arcane magic, in this world to base that off of. Its a fantasy world. Arcane could be any color of the rainbow for all we know, its not our world. Even if DnD said arcane magic should be effin yellow for all I care, Blizzard could make arcane any color they like. Since they already have arcane magic in previous games, and its typically purple, one could assume they would keep that idea in mind when making arcane magic in this game.
I personally understand that they changed the color to broaden the color spectrum in the different trees, but personally this red color doesn't make sense to me. Red is the color of fire. People see red and they associate it with fire. To me, if anything, highly focused arcane magic would probably look pure white. Thats just my opinion, however it could then also be confused with Holy magic. I did however see a really nice photoshop someone did of a pure white with purple outline that made it look really sweet and put no doubt in my mind that that was pure arcane energy.

Now which kinda of purple are you talking heer? like bright purple (which no ones likes) or kool dark purple, like maybe with black added to it, maybe some bronze or gold color. Maybe even add some spiral color, like idk, some strange "arcane" designes.

You're talking about Warcraft aren't you?
In the Warcraft universe, atleast on Azeroth, Arcane itself usually takes the form of blue, purple, and corporeal forms, not just pruple.
Anyways, I think the red-color for Disintegrate is awesome. It doesn't remind me of fire at all for fire usually takes an unpredictable shape and form, plus it's usually assosciated with reddish orange, not pure red.
Disinetegrate is a pure red beam which kind off reminds me of a lasers or a huge beam of destruction, there is no unpredictable movement, there is just only pure desetruction and dismemberment where it goes or touches through. If it were purple that would remind me more of an AoE spell AKA Warcraft/WoW's Dalaran shield, if it were blue it would remind me off a mana-drain or something simaler.
No i think red fits perfectly due to the color's reputation of releasing havoc and destruction.
Sure, it's not a flame or anything, but it does heat up the target. Heat = fire in my mind. Not to mention, I typically associate fire with energy anyway, like..:
Fire =/= energy
Air =/= gas
Water =/= liquids
Earth =/= solids
So if there's a red energy beam that heats up enemies... it seems to me it does fire damage. But I do think the red color looks cooler than purple would look for that beam come to think of it.
And arcane magic is purple because the spell Baal casts at the opening of LoD is purple-colored, and I think that's supposed to be arcane magic he's using there.
You mean the opening cinametic? i could've sworn it was red/orangish/yellowish then they all go into the dude and make him explode, I'ma watch that again.
Anyways, yeah red is a good color, I jsut can't picture a beam of pure destruction being purple...
Who cares what color it is as long as it kills your enemies

We are talking primary colors here. For example, a pearl - colored car isn't white for you? A white color with purple/blue/pink GLOW is an arcane spell. Fire is not red, its primarily yellow. And holy is white, with a yellow glow, and it's very different from white with purple glow.
At the end, arcane can be ANY color. The thing about arcane is, its highly concentrated energy beam. It can be any color, it will still be white because of the "high energy".

I agree with you on the colors with yellow is flame and all that, but when you say white for a high energy beam don't you mean 'bright'? Think of a high conentrated shadow spell it's going to be darkish purple and black not white, but it will still be very bright, defining it's magnitude of power.
The same goes for Disintegrate its form is a pure red beam that is very bright defining how powerful it is to wipe out one but many monsters at one casting.
Alright fine, disintegrate not purple or red, but.......RAINBOW!!!!!
Think about it...
DUDE THAT WOULD BE WICKED SICK!!!i!! All the colors of the rianbow spew out at your enmys and when they die from the move flowers grow out of the gounr and bunnys start nesting where hte monster died. That would be AWESOMESZZZZzzz my kinda d3 ROFL

Yea them to but really we shouldent all be so uptight about disintegrate. I mean arcane magic can combine a few other elements. I mean its arcane mystifying and im shure some of it could have some fire power to it. I mean come on lets face it arcane is just suppost to be like......idk intelect power crap that goes pew pew BOOOOOOOOM or somethin..idk what im talkin about anymore i give up tryin to explain this.
