We're probably [B]not going to be dealing with items that are anywhere near as astronomically rare as some of the Diablo II runes[/B'], and I think it's probably fairly likely that you'll be able to overwrite what's in a socket just by placing a new gem over the old one (destroying it in the process). So, you can still screw up, true, but it probably won't be nearly as devastating - and fixing a mistake should be pretty easy.
Source: http://forums.battle.net/thread.html?topicId=17223146050&pageNo=1#1 Ok...I don't know about the rest of you guys, but I was massively addicted to D2 primarily because I was on a quest to legally find all the most uber rare items...which often meant finding super rare runes and using them to craft godly rune words etc.. The day that I finally could not think of any awesome item I didn't have, I realized there was nothing left to do, I sold my account on ebay and never played the game again. If there are no similarly rare items in D3, I fear this will cause the game to get boring for a lot of people really quickly.
He said nowhere as rare as D2, which is nice. When one may need to kill 8 millions of baal to get an item (asside from luck), there is a problem, don't you think?
This game's core is gear. Blizzard isn't going to make everything so easy to get. But things like Runes are more commonly used or replaced now, and as such shouldn't be as rare as in D2.
I think tahts cool. Im shure the best rune will be hard to come by but not nearly as hard as it is like to find a soj in d2 im shure it will be easier than that(Thank god I dont gatta do 274390754093 hell andy runs woot!!) lol

If a player can find any item they need from their own drops, then the market would be FLOODED with all the best items. In D2, nothing was that rare as needing to kill a boss 8 million times to get it, but you did have to rely on trading to get high items -- which adds a nice element to the game. D2 is, after all, a game about collecting items...and once you've collected all the best stuff, there's nothing left to do but quit. Ideally, they should have some items that are so rare that no player in the entire Diablo universe ever finds them. This will give people something pleasant to dream about.

Umm once you have the best items there is still more to do. Espeshally in Diablo3 where you can restart the same character and have diffrent quests. I dont think making items a little less rare will be a problem. There will be probably alot of items and we maybe wont find them all.

The problem is that Diablo have a singleplayer that cannot be ignored. I agree one should not be able to collect everything he wants by droping but the only reason most runewords are possible are because of dupes and bots.
Imo the solution to this problem is: keep the drop rate per period of time about the same of D2 (we will problably have much longer runs, so the drop rate is naturally higher) but add *alot* more items. This way one will not be able to drop everything he wants because theres just to much things to drop, but he will be able to drop good things relatively easy due the large amount of items in the game.Yes, the market will be flooded with good items - but with different good items. So tecnically the prices will not drop that much because they are not putting a direct competition between then.
To balance things out they must also put alot of reason to one collect many different items to one character - like every build must have alot of alternative but needed gear. In the ned the result is the same of D2 - you need alot of time and trade to collect all character gears. The difference is that you must collect more gear and also drop more. This way the game will be much more friendly and less luck dependent without loosing the difficult.

Yeah don't get me wrong..it's fun trying to get that next level up...but once you get to level 90 something and you realize that there is not a single frickin item in the game that could possibly make your character any better...it becomes REAL boring and you stop caring about the next level up, especially considering that you know it's going to take 400 baal runs and all it's going to do is increase your damage from 14k to 14.1k, which is already enough to insta-kill practically anything except Uber diablo. You should always have something to work for...and it doesn't hurt anyone to have insanely hard to find items. If they are truly insanely hard, then either nobody else will have them, or the people that do have them deserved it because they worked their asses off to get it.

You can always make a new character try a diffrent build. Or seee if you get a new side quest. Explore some dungeons with some mini bosses talk gossip. Theres lots of things to do lol

Good change.. in D2 there was huge amount of items that I didn't even consider for my characters gear setup because the chances of getting them were close to 0.
the people that do have them deserved it because they worked their asses off to get it.
Do you realize that the chances of getting something super-rare in D2 like zod had such a low drop-rate chance that whether you worked your ass off or not, it would hardly make a difference. How do I put it... with those chances, sure, the more runs you do the higher chance of it finally dropping, but its so negligible (just like the drop-rates) it would hardly make a difference.
When it comes down to it, I'm glad they're not going to make drops "so astronomically rare like D2".
I'm with desmond on this one. I've never gotten bored of Diablo, simply because of how many thousands of different character builds there are. I like the asdtronomical chance of finding a Zod, because it makes me feel like I have something to do, even though the Chinese copy of Diablo apparently drops it freaking REGULARLY!, and getting every rare item in the game hardly constitutes selling and quitting Diablo. I've yet to make a Hardcore passive Barbarian, I'm going to make a passive Barb first to see what he's like and then do hardcore, but all that means is that I've still got something to do in the game. Have you made it to level 99 with every conceivable build of every character in Diablo? No? Then there's still crap to do.

First, if it were possible for one player to easily find all the best items individually, then the game would be seriously unbalanced. You are not individually supposed to find a Zod. but there are millions of people who play D2, and someone will find it, and all you need to do is find who's advertising it and trade them something of equivalent value that you found. It's called an economy...and it would be broken and not work if everyone could find all they needed without having to trade.
Second, if you dont think working your ass off makes a difference, then you obviously never worked your ass off.

What the fuck was that sentence for?
The point was you can't get a Zod yourself if you want it. You just cannot. No matter how hard you work for it. Its the same for most items. But thats mainly because D2 just bundle all possible drops together, giving them abysmal changes.
Items need to be hard to obtain, sure, nothing against that. But how rare you want your items to be is purely opinion. Its nice to want something bad, but you need to find what you want a some point to be worth it. Like Bashiok said, we want things to drop. Just dreaming of getting things forever will not keep all players playing forever.
But you're not suppose to drop what you want. You're supose to drop something to trade for what you want. In singleplayer you can fix that by using p8 without have to share loot with anyone.

And by "get" do you mean...drop for yourself? Well I beg to differ. I'm sure it dropped for many people. Although Zod never dropped for me, every single other rune did drop for me at least once. And if I had wanted Zod, it would have been very easy to trade for it.
But thats mainly because D2 just bundle all possible drops together, giving them abysmal changes.
Haha, speak for yourself...almost every single item in the game has dropped for me. Obviously nothing drops on demand. You don't say to yourself, "Gee...I want Crown of Ages right now"...and then 2 hours later, POOF!! Fallen One drops Crown of Ages. Not likely. But if you know how to play, it's not hard to find SOMETHING that has trade value equivalent to it.
Yeah...so if you were never capable of acquiring Zod, then you need to go back and learn how to play D2 before you even bother with D3 my friend.

It's the decisions you make when you have no time to make them that define who you are.

All you are constantly arging about is that, for you, you really can't get nothing on your own, you must absolutely trade to get it.
Not only does this vision sucks horribly for single player, but otherwise its an opinion. You like it that way, I don't. The need to trade for absolutely everything is not my cup of tea. I like my good items when there is a way for me to get them myself, see it drop, thats just so much more awesome than getting an item and trading it for what you want.
I was only talking about Battle.net. For single player you can't trade (or maybe a little bit of trading if you're on LAN), so they should increase the drop rates accordingly in single player.
I think the rarity of items was just about perfect in D2 on Battle.net...it was not easy to find the good stuff, but it was doable. In single player I think the drop rates were a bit too low.
What annoyed me the most was that you couldn't really find Normal unique items until you were ready for Elite unique items.
