so i am now over 200 hours in, and at right around 200 i got my first JC pattern. i know these things are ultra rare and dont drop often, and at about 10 hours later i got another one??? so within a week, farming act2, with 300mf, i got 2 jc patterns. am i getting really lucky? or did they adjust the drop rate??
I've only seen 1 drop, and it was from the random Tomb event (can't remember the name, the one with the lever that clears out the water) in Dalgur Oasis in Act2.
I have about 300 hours I believe and I still haven't seen a single one. I think they dropped the ball on the droprates for those plans. Oh well, I bought all the plans I wanted from AH.

They adjusted the drop rate like casinos adjust the win rate right before I hit back-to-back blackjacks.
I get this game is about farming; but it's retarded how little things like that drop. By my math, for all 12 to drop, I'd have to play around 3600 hours. I can safely that'll never happen.

I've seen one. By my math, I'll only need to play 2,000 hours. Whose math is correct? Law of averages says we're both probably wrong.
You can also purchase them if you're a completionist (most are only a million or two); if you haven't seen them all in 3,600 hours, I daresay you should have enough gold to pick them up.

IT's not about being a completionist; it's about getting the best stats possible. The one I got was for the life gem on the helm (purple? who knows). I'd much prefer the MF one. The one that gives me intelligence for other sockets.
It's not like a pet that is just visual an non-improving. It's a good bump in stats necessary for progression.
Buying your way to getting them just isn't satisfying. I don't even sell stuff on the AH, and have never really bought much; so not really an option. You shouldn't have to play so long (even 2000 hours!) for it to happen. There's RNG; then there is punishment. Much of this game's loot system tends towards punishment.

You can get the best stats possible by purchasing the gem, or the recipe. In truth, crafting the gem yourself only saves you a small amount of gold relative to the overall cost of the gem (approximately 300k on the Flawless Star with current market prices for materials). If it's satisfaction you're after, I guess by my book that's a completionist thing - I'm the same way, so I know the feeling; however I also have no qualms either purchasing the recipe or the gem by itself if I desire having the extra stats.
This game will be around a long time. Most people won't play it to "completion" (that is, all of the recipes, characters geared to the teeth) in one round. They will quit for a while (read: a few months), come back, play some more, repeat. I don't know what to say anymore beyond that. It's what the game is, it's what Diablo has always been about. That specific item you want is either going to take dumb luck to see, or require trading/buying. For the former, expect to spend hundreds and thousands of hours acquiring it. For the latter, expect high prices and a different kind of satisfaction that comes with checking another item off the list.

Bought the perfect star ruby on the AH because it was cheap.
