For as much as color and lighting plays a part in their design philosophy and drastically changes from area to area, spells and such really do not affect the environment despite how vibrant and explosive they tend to be. Would have been a fun(not essential) addition to see our skills light up rooms, enemies and other players as they are cast.
I mostly bring this up because I am starting to install mods on Skyrim and it is amazing what shifts in lighting can do to a game's immersion. Of course, Diablo 3 wont have mods... but still, a conversation while we wait for the game to be released is always fun.
I see alot of people complaining about the graphics. But even on youtube videos they dont look that bad. Diablo has never been the go to game for graphics anyways
Right. The graphics as a whole are quite nice. Gorgeous stylization imo. It's just that, while the lighting that exists is quite brilliant, the dynamic aspects of it (with things like spells, dramatics shadows and such) are almost non existant. Spells very much affect the games physics, which I love! The thing that would also be neat had they allowed spells to radiate their respective lights across rooms and such. Or to see a solitary torch in a dark room cast your shadow across the opposite wall. Ah well. Here is to Diablo 3! Glad it is almost here
Real time dynamic lightning is a very resource consuming feature - that could be a reason they stayed away from it. They want the game to be playable (and beautiful) in a wide range of specs. I've seen the game on low and it doesn't look bad at all (artistically speaking).
In the recent GDC conference, they stated that "great art is ageless", so maybe that's why they went with the whole stylized graphics and not many heavy computing features such as dynamic lightning (they kind of already have some of it, dynamic shadows look awesome in the game, but I get what you're saying).
I'm no expert, though, so I could be completely wrong. That's how I see it anyways.
I have to say I recently upgraded to a gtx 560 and set starcraft 2 to extreme settings and played a custom map. All of a sudden someone set off the mothership's planet cracker ability and every unit in the area was lit up like christmas. I yelled out "wtf was that!?" I was in awe for a few seconds. Option should be there for those with the hardware.
Right. It would be very resource intensive to have so many spells across the screen casting lighting and shadows. 4 player co-op would be a system drain.
Maybe in the future we will see games that can do it and systems that can handle it efficiently
and by f2p scam you mean you get to play a small sample of the game for free, but if you really want to get into it and have full access you have to pay, maybe even annually?
