I know Bashiok already said weapon swapping has been stripped from D3 but in my opinion this is different. What about ranged and melee sets. Ok first off Yes, this is a feature WoW has, but just because that game has it doesn't mean its a bad idea. My suggestion was that say an enemy is far away well you could whip out your ranged and tag him till he gets close and then whip out your melee. In a way its different because you cant make two melee sets only a melee and a ranged. It would make it easier for a ranged character to adapt to an enemy running up on them.
I think that idea works well in a lot of games, but I don't think it'd fit well with Diablo's play style. I often set up my characters like that in LoD and Titan Quest, but didn't end up switching very often at all. If my character was primarily melee, I never really bothered trying to fight at range. Instead, I would just close the distance and attack. With a ranged character I would either kite the enemy or if possible just stand there and use my ranged attack point blank.
I just never found many cases where a character was balanced enough between melee and range to warrant switching weapons regularly.
The swaping feature is not limited in those games because of the overall game desing. It's a matter of mechanic.
Ranged-melee builds in those games are usually inviable because the way the skill trees and stats are desing does not allows you to use both weapons with enough efficience. The game usually asks you to concentrate in one play style instead of hybridize.
Imagine a class that have skills that works both in melee and in range, the masteries also works in both weapons at once and every point in invest in dex also adds to str and vice versa (in a way that your str and dex are equal). Depeding on the monster and level desing this class could be totally viable.
Actually this kind of build exist in D2. I play alot of Javazons in D2 and I find usually change between javalin/shield and spear. I usually use Power Strike / Lightning Strike with spears since their damage higher since it's a two handed weapon. And there are situations were melee are better then ranged (like when you're fightning extra fast in hell).
Ranged-melee builds will problably be in D3 in a way or another. For exemple, the wizard have melee spells and the barbarian have ranged skills.
So the change occurs in changing between skills, not swaping weapons.
My dear friend. Javelin and spear weapons are in the same skill tree in case you haven't noticed. We're talking about two completely different skill trees here (melee and ranged).
What the skill tree have to do with it ? Skill tree is nothing but a form of organizing the skill display since zons make close to no use of +skill in a certain tree. If power/charged/lightning strike were in any other tree noone would even notice.
I though you guys wer talking about gameplay and the viability of playing switching from melee and ranged weapons. Skill trees are something irrelevant.
Spears and javelins ARE different kind of weapons.
Spear = melee.
Javelin = ranged (in 99% cases you shouldnt use java in melee, unless you really need your shield).
I don't think any classes can utilize both close and long range combat without seriously gimping themselves. This is mostly because there's not yet currently a long range physical fighter (hopefully the Rogue will fill this spot!)
Still he has a "Throw Weapon" skill to hit enemies at distance !
I never liked "throw weapon" !! I always find that stange... Maybe if it's a big skill (high damage) but you need to retake your weapon after he threw it.

Yeah I always thought that was kinda weird.. when you throw a knife or something.. it just disappears lol.. could also be kinda strange if you had to pick it up after but it would be more realistic.

The skill was not implementd yet, but there are several ways to solve this issue. For exemple, the barb can throw a "summoned" weapon (like the Hammer of the Ancients). Since those 2 skills shared the same tree (battlemaster) i believe it would make alot of sense.

Well that's not completely true...What about the hybrid zon. Zons where my fav class in d2, I always made a java/bowa zon for snips and gigles. It was fun to own people with a weak little halfling when they where decked out. Sure I got owned too sometimes but who dosen't every once and awhile. I mean most of the time I didnt't switch with my guys. Imagine using BO and having to switch from your regular setup to your CTAs or your war spears...would kinda get annoying wouldent it? idk

Just doesn't work... and it's a way to make the game more easy on start !!! It's already easy on start so please no...
I don't see a barb switch for a bow when he only need 1 melee hit to kill....
♣Strength and Honor♣
Barb switching to bow would be kinda strange.

Another option would be a boomer lol
