This is my only problem with the game, I'm sure it will be amazing but does anybody think the dialogue in the game is lame? It's so cliche with the evil laughter and corny lines.
I appreciate that the team at Blizzard do have a sense of humor and incorporate some of that into the storyline (some of it is quite funny) but the latest monk video made me cringe.
Yes, I thought the same. What I tell myself, though, is that I am playing a game that was originally aimed at teenagers with an insatiable thirst for bloodlust and online play. I'm hoping for a good general overarching story, but I'm not too concerned with dialogue. I'm mostly concerned about the gameplay and looks, since they're mostly what we're going to be dealing with in the long run.
I agree i was really disapointed when i saw the monk video it felt like watching a badly animated and storyless anime. Like daggers in my kidney and sludge down my throat i bared with it though and took a thorough helping of monk gameplay which i must say releaved the aformentioned symptoms considerably. Though i agree there are some in game dialog that really tweaked my nerves, for example in the first offical gameplay footage when the random rescued soldier goes "OH MY GOD WHAT WAS THAAAA-
A*higher*-AAAT" but i have faith half of these are place holders and no where near final they do have practically 2 years if they are planning for 2011
The voice acting and script were lacking a bit, and the animation wasn't top notch, but I felt that it portrayed the monk class accurately, and served its purpose overall. The first fight scene was better imo, the second one was very anime'esqe as previously mentioned. Animated trailers are probably the last thing on their minds at this point in development, and they probably just used higher poly/res versions of the models being used in game. I would much rather them focus on the actual game anyways.
Agreed, but eh, it's not something I really expect them to have invested a lot of time into, i.e., as they would for a 'real' cinematic. These are just game-engine trailers to try and give cool little introductions to the classes.
I didn't think it was that bad really, The Wizard one wasn't any different / better, if anything I though the Wiz trailer was a lot more dull.
Blizz has actually done some impressive work RE: the story / lore / character development / etc., especially compared to most cookie-cutter RPGs. This little trailer may seem more than slightly cliche, but look at the Diablo novels, the history they've developed over time and it's very solid. Not really that fair to hold something like this up to this level of criticism, heh.
These were never meant to take anyone's breath away, at best they probably expect someone to sit back and say, 'Cool. That looks fun.' Compare that to the full cinematic trailer from the D3 announcement which was pretty awe-inspiring. They know when it matters, when the A-game is called for.
"during development" is the BEST time to rise concerns not go, "they will fix it when it is released, they will have it fixed by then, etc".
by then it would be too late.
if we think that things are not up to scratch, as fans, we should be voicing it out instead of thinking that the developers are god and would fix everything by the time the game is released.
Tons of game has gone down that road where people went, "it is still under development, it is just a beta", assuming that things would be fixed by release but guess what?
i've lost count of the number of games that didn't get things fixed by release and those are just the ones i cared to know about
Yeah, that whole cinematic disappointed me. I hope that's just something to spice up the monk's announcement - I don't want to see cinematics like that in the game. I'd rather see 5 really high-quality cinematics (like Diablo II) than a game littered with shitty ones (somewhat reminiscent of Guild Wars).

The dialogs were pathetic and i'm deeply disapointed.
All those cliches and over the top setences are terrible made and 11 kids can creat better stuff. I'm afraid the dialogs are so bad that read all the texts will be a sacrifice instead of a joy. If that happen the game will become a frame work.
And theres no such thing as "it's not their focus". A game cannot reach it's full potential without a good storyline and well made characters, specially a RPG derivate. Well made characters are a powerfull tool. All of us have some special feeling for some Diablo 1 and 2 NPC, item, location, class. When our favorite stuff are mentioned somewhere something good is triggered in our souls. All this happen because the background of D1 and D2 are extremely well builded and good texts are a very important part of this process.
And all the great lore developed in the first two games and in the novels only increase their responsability in this area. If they fail all the beaty will turn to dust. A game background is pointless if it not makes into the game.
Ignore the context and background of the game simply to add childsh and "funny" stuff is the number one blizzard's defect. What they did to Warcraft universe in WC3 and WoW is their ultimate sin and I pray for the safaty and health of Diablo and Starcraft universe.
Diablo did sort of laugh Dauroth, just not in game. When you opened up the game (the original Diablo I mean) and saw that big image of Diablo there was definitely a laugh in the background which I'm sure was meant to come from Diablo.
Yeah, the dialogue as well as the entire cinematic video in general for the Monk was pretty atrocious. I'm sure that this will be one of those videos that will be dugged out of obscurity by fifth generation (!) Diablo players and be laughed at.
While we're on the subject of dialogue, does anyone know if NPC dialogue is still in the game like the one we saw between Cain and the Barbarian in the original gameplay trailer? I'm really hoping it's not because I find the change from the NPC monologue system to a dialogue one kind of lame. For me, it takes a key role-playing element out of the game where you create your own proper personality and responses for your character rather than having them constantly handed to you.
I don't mind characters commenting on the wilderness or yelping orders but dialogues just seem to end up being clumsy to me. I mean do we really need a grunt from the character after a long speech from an NPC? Especially if the speech is especially dismal where a response to it is just plain jarring and easily ruins the solemnity of the words.
I for one could very much do without dialogue and I hope it's kept to a minimum.
Oh and by the way, I too find villains laughing under most circumstances really annoying. Especially with the Diablo 3 version of King Leoric's speech, just didn't work as well as the first time around. Overuse is deadly.

Nihlathak was a great villain for this reason. He wasn't all, "Mwa ha ha ha!"
