For years fans of the Diablo franchise have been hoping, waiting, and praying for the announcement of the much anticipated Diablo 3, yet as the third installment to this franchise was announced the same underlying question has been asked by all fans... Is Diablo 3's art going to be true to diablo, and is it too much like the Warcraft franchise?
So lets truly examine this question... since it has been asked by many.
1. Detail - In Diablo 1 and 2 facial features on characters in the game were not defined, there (as far as we have seen so far) is alot more character detail in diablo 3 (eyes, nose, mouth, even bone structure is more clearly defined). the other day i put on a helm on my amazon and her face looked like a peperoni pizza (i just laughed and thats part of why im writing this). there is clearly alot more detail in diablo 3 than 1 and 2. There was alot more emphasis put on armor than characters in d1 and 2 but this is also because armor is easier than the body. the most difficult thing to draw is the human body (especially a naked one) Take a look at the barbarian... If you look at how much detail is in the character of diablo 3 and how they have evolved the features and structure of this character... he has a resembalance to the d2 barb we all know and love. yet there is something more - his face looks weary and that plays a big part with the story behind this character and the life he has lived. And as an artist you get creative and want to include all these emotions bottled up inside this person who has seen so much bloodshed... this just would not ever be possible with the graphs of d1 and 2.
2. Environment - the textures used are much more defined. For example grass - in diablo 3 so far grass looks more like blades of grass rather than blotches of green with various shades of brown patched in. Moving on into the dungeons... the entire dungeons in D1 and 2.. throughout the same dungeon, there is no sence of activity going on or even a purpose for the dungeon to exist. Take for example the catacombs, one of the more well knowen dungeons, as your ventureing around the catacombs have you ever wondered what the heck the place was used for before it was consumed by demons? And if it was used for anything at all, why was it set up so akward? Every single room in the catacombs (for the most part) looks exatly the same... usually rooms in a building are used for different purposes so they are going to have a different layout or even different decore.
3. Tone - The tone in Diablo 3 so far is very true to diablo 1 and 2... infact for all you gore seekers its going to be much more gory as far as blizzard is leading on. You can find blizz reps talking about how they want to incorporate animations that have a "gears of war" goryness to it. Blizz has also said that when you die you will have a death animation and not only one generic animation there will be several, some mentioned have been a monster picking you up smaching your head into a wall, ripping off your arms, and also eating you. I dont know of any time in D1 or D2 where this has happened but just reading what Blizz has said on just your death and what they want to do with that... seams like their direction with the tone and maturity level of the game is pretty dark and gory.
4. Color - Well this is probably the thing that confuses alot of people. Color is what distingueshes different objects in a sceane or shades of the same color... so naturally if you have more detail to show and diferenciate between other details... there is going to be more color. This is just how your going to bring about more detail in a sceane and that is what i see blizzard trying to do. Your not giong to get a very gory sceane using D1 and D2 graphs... or else you would have had it in D1 and 2.
5. Realism - Face it we all know Sanctury is a fantasy world, but what makes it apealing is that there is a sence of beliveability to it, there are elements to it that reflect our own world (so that we can picture ourselfes in it) yet has that pinch of magic to let us be free from our own nich of life that we live in. So not evey day is a sunny day nor is it a day where a storm is aproching. However... these elements could be used to emphasise the tone of the story... such as the closer you get to Hell the darker it gets... Lore wise the whole of sanctury was never completly affected in d1 or 2... there are places in sanctury that are untouched by diablos minions. And we will get to visit some of these places in diablo 3 and see what exactly are the wonders of this world and perhaps make a player feel more attached to this world and tying the lore to the player, make the player want to save sanctury or else this majestic place that he visited will be overrun by demons.
So what I see blizzard trying to do is add alot more detail to the world of sanctury and more importantly than the detail but the story that is told with all this detial.. I see blizzard wanting players to get attached to something more than the "grind" or the gear, something more than just baal run after run... Blizzard wants you to feel not just addictied to the game but attached to it.

"Always respect the purity of battle. For only in the heart of combat are all pretenses of nobility and quality stripped away, replaced by survival and death."
i think it's stunning overall, but there are only a few points i don't like.
as long as they change the lethality animation (which is cheezy when i saw it on youtube) into a more "gruesome death" thing that doesn't look like an aura, i'm happy with everything else. i would like it to be a little less cartoony (but it's a good compromise between realism and cartoon) by making the blood darker, and in general i'm one of those people that wanted it to be a more sinister and edgy-looking game, but i suppose they have their rating to consider. Also there's no accumulation of blood-spatter on the character. I think the death sounds of the monsters are a little too similar, and there should be more to make it seem more realistic, and some sort of animation that gets one monster in a group to point at the character and call his friends over, or get angry, or maybe cower in fear or run away.
However, i do think that their entire artistic theme as it is executed is beautiful in and of itself, and the attention to detail is fantastic. I guess i'm just one of those people who like it darker than the rating may allow.
IMO the game isn't detailed enough. If they added more detail to the textures and what-not, I think the complaints about the art style would be gone. The extra detail would remove much of the "smooth" and "colorful" looking objects in the world because it would be more clearly defined.
But alas, they have to cater to people who can't shell out a measly ~$200 for a vid card and/or RAM.
Yeah, nice try but this doesn't have anything to do with the art or style of the game (franchise). Its more detailed, duh, what did you expect? Obviously its gonna be a whole lot more detailed but i fail to see why you make a point out of this in regard to the art and style of Diablo (and to be more exact the criticism/doubts/questions people uttered). It sounds to me that instead of actually listening to the valid concerns you just made up a fictional person with the opinion D3 shouldn't have been as detailed as it is now just so you could argue with yourself a bit. Plus, as far as i can see D3 isn't that detailed at all if you compare it to todays games, or in fact if you compare Diablo and Diablo 2 to their age games. (Remember that Blizzard opted for 2d back then because so much more detail and realism was possible with it) So i really fail to get your point here.
Yeah, nice try, 800x600 2000 2d graphics are more detailed than widescreen 2009 3d, yea sure.
Again, textures are going to be more detailed, but also again, they are far from being as detailed as the textures of Diablo were in relation to the games back then. In fact i'm possitive a whole lot of people were weary of the almost textureless pillars and walls when they first saw D3, it reminded a lot of people of WoW (where its done intentionally, for that cartoony feel). I'm sure a lot of people are hoping that that isn't Blizzards intention with D3 though. (the good thing is that D3's development is still quite early)
Onto the "dungeons", Blizzard will be capable of creating ones that make more sense in room layout i guess, although if you look at architecture then its an utter fail, what i've seen so far makes less sense then all of D2's and D1's dungeons combined. Again, i'm failing to see the point of you bringing up the technological limitations of back then when you only succeed in noting the technological possibilities of today without making it relevant to the actual art of Diablo as a whole. I also don't see all those different rooms you claim to see, what i see is destroyable actors like furniture, woopedidoo, big deal. Hooray for technological advances, can we now discuss Diablo's art style please?
You should look at some leaked WWI demo video. Comparing wow textures to Diablo 3 texture is plain stupid and also funny. Diablo 3 textures are way more detailed.
Haha, yea, good one. "Its gory so it must be true to Diablo"? Hmmm, nope. Its like saying Evil Dead 2 is true to Reservoir Dogs because they're both so gory. The "gore" D3 has shown me makes me rather laugh, its so over the top and cheesy. What i see is a whole lot of gibs and blood, guess what, more then half of the games these days have lots of gibs and blood. Give me the decapitation animation of the hidden any day. I'm looking forward to seeing great death animations of my own character though.
They already said they will had lots of different monster death but it looks like you missed that while you were trolling and ranting on internet forums. More than a half of games these day are in 3D so since diablo 3 is in 3D, it isn't Diablo ? Whatever, your argument is tasteless.
No really captain obvious? Maybe you are somewhat confusing yourself, because the point people are making isn't about all the shades of color this game utilizes, its about the contrast of bright colors you see in your every day American comic. Plus, if your whole statement is about detail and the amount of colors and therefor using more colors that stand out and contrast with each other then that is an absolute oxymoron for the reason that if you can make use of more shades of color you are less forced to make use of heavy contrasting colors to make a detail stand out. (8 bit games vs today games, which would you define as being "more colorful"? Exactly)
Hahaha, American comic, yes sure, same colors  With all those spells, monsters, loots, environnement and more on the screen, you do need more colors.
Evolution in art? How, where, when, why? The only thing which is barely relevant in your romantisazing vague speech is your assumption the game will get darker the closer you get to Hell. You could've just said that instead of wasting our time.
It makes the world more believable, therefore more realism, therefore it adds depth and immersion.
I want my ten minutes back.
Not posting would have fixed that. Would have been an interesting thread.
Well I dident realise that my thread would upset you so much... for that i can only say im sorry that you happen to stumble across it. Cant do much about your 10 mins though... although there are far worse things that you could have done with those 10 mins, or happen to you for that matter. But in all truthfullness i can only exchange my words for thats what was exchanged in the first place...
The thing is I am confused as to what you want from me... I never gave you ten minutes in the first place (time is not mine to give), and i never took them either... see you took ten mins out of your busy day and spent them reading my thread... It is actually impossible for me to have taken them from you, you spent your ten mins on your own accord, i dont know how i could ever give you back your 10 mins... cuz i simply did not take them...
When time is as valued, as it seams to be for you, chosing how you spend it would naturally seam to be of the utmost importance. Like now, if you ever do get around to reading this, i would have to ask you why are you still reading this??? you read my thread, posted your 2 cents and now your are still here... I dont exactly see the logic in this but you are a very "interesting" person... actually to think that i have the power to give you 10 miins, means you must think very highly of me... Unfortunatly im not that powerful, im just another person in this world like many others who has thoughts... and thats all they are - at the end of the day, the end of my life, and alas the end of time they remain just thoughts nothing more nothing less, and most likely forgoten before the day is done. So if you are reading this just know that this whole conversation will be forgoten sooner than later, and i belive much sooner than you think.
Once again, i say im sorry to you and wish you the best of luck with you and the time you are given.

"Always respect the purity of battle. For only in the heart of combat are all pretenses of nobility and quality stripped away, replaced by survival and death."
Yeah i just after playing d1 and 2 for so long and then WoW... i dont see how D3 is sketched after WoW. I can see how the detail has more similarities with WoW than D2 or 1 (just because for example facial features: d2 you had a ball with a few dots, wow you had nose, eyes, mouth) but to actually take WoW as a building block... i really dont think its that black and white. D2 was colorful compared to d1 and there was also almost the same debate when d2 first came out when talking about color. D2 you start out in one of the "brightest" places in the game and it does kinda get darker as you go along (thats more individual for the act though, start is bringht boss dungeon is dark). And when you talk about armor the D1 armors look much more darker then d2 armor... I loved the warrior armor and was hoping for more of that in d2 but i was indeed disappointed...
When i take a moment though and step back and look at the history and evolution of art in D1 then D2 it has actually been getting more colorful... and it is due to having alot more things to color in the game. there was not as many "things" in D1 as D2 and hopefully theres alot more "things" in D3.
Blizzard is focusing on keeping the elements that make the Diablo universe "Diablo" but to say that Diablo has always been this dark game is actually not neccesarily true... Diablo 1 by all means was the darkest... but you dident have a wilderness, a jungle, a desert. I played AoC when it came out and the graphs were awsome... prob the best ive seen in any game to date, but all the actions looked the same. I played a Dark Templar and every move i did looked the same... and it was like that for all the classes pretty much, well i dident mind this that much in diablo where the graphs where inferior, but in AoC i expected alot more variety it was almost boreing to see the same thing over and over again. What was really cool in AoC i must say though were fatalities you had a chance of performing this really sick animation when you kill something and it was the coolest thing. The elements that make diablo is really that addictive killing spree that you go on... and making it look that much cooler is what i think they are going after... and of course we all want it to be dark... but with so many things to put on the screen i can see why diablo has evolved into being a more "colorful" product.

What debate? I don't see anyone debating anything, all you do is fixating on some words and throwing them back at me. I also don't see where i flamed or insulted the OP though (apart from calling him "captain obvious", oh my god, quickly delete my entire post and all of my arguments, do it), but anyways.
You're kidding right? You called him stupid, and you called him a jackass, and proceeded to talk about his posts being a waste of your time. (Why would he care, anyway?)
It's childish, and isn't needed. You can express your opinions on the topic and his post without resorting to garbage like that.
How any one could watch the WWI trailer and not think "bad ass" is beyond me so I will abstain from any debates like this because of their absurd ridiculousity.
Sorry for having to disagree Murderface, but going with that mentality means for you Diablo 3 is (will be) no different than any good random action RPG. Why not just play God of War then?
It will be superior in lore and customization to most random action rpgs, of that much, I am sure. Are you saying that badassedness is a bad thing?
Here's what I honestly get out of the whole thing. Yes, the game has changed, and it has evolved whether you like it or not. But I think you guys don't see why its all linked together.
What I mean is... Diablo 1 especially was focused on the story, the Gothic element, and the sinister look of it all in order to keep you enganged. Why? Because of the limitations of the game at that time. You couldn't make fancy animations, spell effects, or insanely textured dungeons. So they went with what they had and made the focal point of the game on something else that they could go crazy with. The story, cusomization to an extent, and the feeling the game gave you with what little they had.
Moving on to Diablo 2, they chose to stick with a 2d environment because it gave them a lot more breathing room to play with things, rather than doing it in a 3d environment where it would be yet again limited. So this time, animation got a little more improved and they concentrated hard on what they could... armor, and customization. With the improved resolution, the extra frames in the animation, and some more bit depth per texture to work with, of course they added something different to it. And I agree with what they've said before about making certain things stand out, in order to make something a focal point you have to make the object next to it contrast. So obviously some variations are going to come in, and god forbid... that means color seeps in. Now considering they're still limited by graphical effects, and animations, they obviously didn't go over the top on anything else.
However, I'd like to make a side argument about epicness for a sec... If you watch the Cinematics, particularly the LoD one with Baal's army, you can't for one second tell me that the entire Act V is based on 'epicness'. Sorry, but having things look crazy has been a long time coming in the Diablo series if you paid attention to what LoD added as far as dungeons\cinematics were concerned.
And finally we come to Diablo 3, we're working in pure 3D with fluid animation, all the particle effects and shaders we could as for, but in order to cater to lower end machines we're still using sprites and 2d images on somethings... mobs when they die for instance. So.... we have the basis of one of the coolest stories ever, tons of customizations have already been done (Diablo 2), so now we get to bring in some BadA animation, spell effects, and a grand world. I will admit that some of the Spell Effects are a little more flashy than I would like, almost to the point of cheesy, and some of the dungeon shots seem a little odd with the like 40 ft.+ drop offs, but I really have to say I can't blame Blizzard for it, and I really think it has nothing to do with WoW at all. I think it has to do with the fact that they've wanted to focus on something new for a long time, and they've been restrained from going crazy on spell effects, animation, and the environment with full color, 3d, and depth that they're going hog wild on it.
Its like waiting x-mas after x-mas askign for that brand new console and never getting it.... wiating and waiting and waiting, and you keep saving up your money. Then all of a sudden this x-mas rolls around an even newer console comes out and you have tons of money saved up for it now. Hell yeah you buy it and go crazy playing it with all the cool new games.
If i was a blizzard artist I would be DYING to explore all the things in the diablo world that has had to be off limits due to technical limitations. Along with that, yes the style has been affected because they've never been able to do any of it before. As well as previous point... you're also going to be seeing places of the world that were untouched by Diablo's minions and of course they're going to look bright, and cheery. Evil hasn't beena round for quite some time. I'm cool with that.
So really in the end, you're all right. The art has been affected, not the way you think it has, or for the reasons you thought. But all in all, whether they went over the line a little bit with it or not, its a brand new game and they're obviously going to be pushing the envelope somewhere, in some part of the game.
If you don't like it when it releases, just turn up the contrast on your monitor and turn down the brightness It'll all be ok =)
EDIT: Off Topic I know, but no light radius = lose. I'm really going to miss the whole aspect of the game where after like 10 ft. there could be a huge 500 strong throng of monsters and you would have no idea it was there. I really wish the whole 3d thing didn't screw performance as far as dynamic lighting with a light radius is concerned.
This pretty much sums up how I feel. The lack of details makes it look smooth, colorful, and very much like WoW.

SHOCKING, is the key. And no, your barb getting his head biten off isnt necessarily the most shocking thing.
Atmosphere is the biggest factor. Without that, its just "over-the-top gore".
When Baal sits down beside Marius... You hear whipcracks and screams... Laughter.
Or when you enter The Butcher' s room and there are slaughtered HUMANS everywhere...
When you walk along a silent, dark dungeon and come to a room... where a corpse... cut in half... of a women lays on a table...
That is the shock.
Will we see those in D3?
I hope so. I hope this doesnt make me a psycho. =P
Its really hard to get a shock like that if the game concentrates on fast paced action where your barb is just bashing all those monsters into pieces with his big glowing magical hammer, so i hope they at least have those things in cinematics or something.
Epic, yet cruel. Thats what Diablo is about. Not exactly D1 though. Its the same very-basic style just.
D1 has more "suspense" instead of "epic" thanks to the tight dungeons instead of open places lie a battlefield.
D1 is just less epic. And if you want to add epicness, which is not bad at all, then it should be more like in that trailer.
This post is mainly about my opinions, just wanted to share my thoughts. What do you think?
Diablo 3 has a slower run/walk speed so I don't think the shock value will be decreased, we have only seen part of the first act and we already have virgin sacrifices, decapitations, and mass corpse burnings. I'm sure there will be more gratuitous shock value to come. Compare the first act of D3 (what we've seen so far) and the first act of D2. Corpse tree, burnt tristram, and Andariels lair. Those are the only things that really shocked me. Weve already had at least 2 shocks in D3 so far(the gnarled walkers were kinda shocking too, but not in a brutal way).
It's going to be slower, you can already tell and it goes with their new philosophy. The chambers are also much tighter so you cant just evade combat that easily, you need to bash your way through (unless you use special abilities - but they come with a price, for example, you can't Leap unless you have Fury, and you don't have Fury unless you hit monsters with your normal attack skill).
The closest to the confirmation you are asking for would be statements regarding the three things that made D2 characters overpowered and which they are trying to avoid in D3: unlimited amounts of health gained through potions, the fact that you could TP your way out of hairy situations, and the fact that the player was faster than any monster in the game pretty much. Two out of those three things are officially confirmed to be changing, so there's no reason the run speed wouldn't as well.
In many ways, D3 is going to be much more in spirit with D1 than D2 was.
@Crucifixious - yea things generally get more detailed after a decade of technology evolution.
i read the first two paragraphs then stopped.
@Kenzai
i agree.
its not the fact that OH LOOK UR ARMS GOT RIPPED OFF, UR HEAD GOT BIT OFF, UR BADASS, LOTS OF BLOOD BLAH BLAH that makes diablo what it is.
diablo one used various elements EXTREMELY EFFECTIVELY. they KNEW when and where certain things would have the GREATEST effect on the player. it wasn't at every turn, it wasnt over the top gore left and right with bodies littered everywhere. it was the delivery of the horror that made d1 > d2 and with waht ive seen so far, better than d3.
I read most of the first post and its nice, good thinking.
I recently discovered ''what makes diablo 2 look horror-ish''... go play d2 and look at EVERY object and EVERY piece terain and notice the black color. Everything in d2 has black in it, even just simple dots or stripes, but theres black in everything.
I dont know if blizzard is gonna make d3 like this, cuz it dosnt really look like it on what we have seen so far.
Simply, the black adds to the horror element in the game, without looking at the blood bathes, blood and gore.

You're kidding right? You called him stupid, and you called him a jackass, and proceeded to talk about his posts being a waste of your time. (Why would he care, anyway?)
It's childish, and isn't needed. You can express your opinions on the topic and his post without resorting to garbage like that.

Fuck you, I'm a dragon.
This pretty much sums up how I feel. The lack of details makes it look smooth, colorful, and very much like WoW.

In many ways, D3 is going to be much more in spirit with D1 than D2 was.
i read the first two paragraphs then stopped.
@Kenzai
i agree.
its not the fact that OH LOOK UR ARMS GOT RIPPED OFF, UR HEAD GOT BIT OFF, UR BADASS, LOTS OF BLOOD BLAH BLAH that makes diablo what it is.
diablo one used various elements EXTREMELY EFFECTIVELY. they KNEW when and where certain things would have the GREATEST effect on the player. it wasn't at every turn, it wasnt over the top gore left and right with bodies littered everywhere. it was the delivery of the horror that made d1 > d2 and with waht ive seen so far, better than d3.
DA: Origins looks great
I recently discovered ''what makes diablo 2 look horror-ish''... go play d2 and look at EVERY object and EVERY piece terain and notice the black color.
