I tried to come up with a build that would let a wizard fire and never stop with Ray of Frost while being able to take a lot of possible damage. Nobody knows exactly what Archon abilities are but if it is good, then this would work with it...
Damn, yeah, with that build it seems like ray of frost wouldn't cost anything. I might take out Astral Presence and replace it with Galvanizing Ward, because you already have AP regen from Familiar. This also plays off the tank idea, since it increases your Energy Armor duration and gives you some life regen. I might also replace Arcane Torrent with something that would help in the survivability theme, like Teleport or Slow Time. If you're going to be shooting a laser beam all the time you'll probably want to be able to teleport, because you'll probably be doing a lot of kiting.
Ya I could easily take out Astral Presence and replace with galvanizing ward and still have RoF going and be regening mana. I'd have to keep Torrent because that rune makes it add 120% to damage so the second time you cast it it'll add 217.2 damage for a total at best of 398.2 damage per cast. I like teleport and slow time but Archon has slow time with the indigo rune and it lasts 20 seconds. Add the precision from energy armor and torrent critical damage could be near 800 when it hits? I don't know what the critical is but assuming it is at least twice...
Ya I think the regen would be around 16.5 a second for AP more than enough for Ray of Frost without AstralP. With AP it would be 18.5 arcane power a second total regen, there is a toss up between whether Arcane Torrent with storm armor and gold rune (to cast AT forever) would be better than AT with Energy Armor and Precision (40% critic), without knowing what a critical value is I can't figure out which would be best, does anyone know what critical value is?
I wonder if players will have to spec for arcane power once they have end game gear. I've seen + resource mods already.. will resource regen be an affix?
The thing is (on Arcane Torrent), I don't know if Ray of Frost counts as arcane damage. I'm thinking it's probably cold damage, and if that's the case you don't get the damage bonus from that rune on Arcane Torrent. You could put Sparkflint in Familiar for the +40% damage increase, keep Astral Presence, and figure you get more damage and just have to take breaks occasionally.
Might as well put in glass cannon instead of changing the familiar rune... that is a massive amount of mana and that level 7 gold rune for RoF won't be easy to get but with AstralP you'll regen enough mana to keep firing till you find that 7G rune and when your not firing it'll just add to shield to keep you alive. I thought I would use RoF for regular monsters and arcane torrent for bosses before switching to RoF, twisting AT with RoF was never a consideration. With Evocation skill and diamond skin the character would be in diamond skin all the time with level 7 indigo rune. If Aechon really did suck you could add teleport with obsidian to lower damage taken but with blur, and energy shield, and diamond skin... defense shouldn't be an issue, so maybe Eave of force with alabaster for the stun.
I can't possibly know that K, haven't even played the game yet.
Good build. But Ray of Frost is a line spell, and we don't really know the radius of Arcane Torrent but I'd say its a small area. Main problem I see is that they both require you to be stationary cos there are channeling spells.
How about swapping out Arcane Torrent for Blizzard or Frost Nova giving you more time to finish off mobs. Frost Nova with a crimson rune for Bone Chill. So you Freeze them and use Ray of Frost to finish them off. If going Blizzard, I would use Alabaster for Frozen solid or Indigo for Stark Winter. Both will give you more time to finish mobs off. Also if you do use Frozen Nova which requires no AP, you can re-ruin Familiar for dmg or replace the spell, your base AP regen would more than cover Ray of Frost.
I know the Diamond Skin would only be for Uh Oh situations or boss fights, but your build really is more of a don't let anyone get close to me build, especially since Ray of Frost has a LONG range from what I've seen. Perhaps swap it out for Slow time or Teleport. Slow time with an indigo ruin to ensure mobs are slowed for 14 sec after, would again help your Ray of Frost finish them off before they get to you.
I don't like Ray of Frost at all. From what I understand, it is just like disintegrate but does no AoE damage and does not pierce targets, making it a strictly single-target spell only which is really crappy in Diablo.

I didn't know that frost is single target spell, but with arcane torrent you should be able to hit more. AT as far as I know does way more damage than blizzard, but I could see replacing it with blizzard and alabaster rune for freezing to get crowd control and if the precision of energy armor and indigo stack then that would be 120% chance to critical hit with blizzard.... If critical blizzard equals the amount of damage from Arcane Torrent with crimson rune stone then I would either switch out archon for Blizzard or switch AT for Blizzard. I like slow time but it is only 10 seconds, Archon with slow time lasts 20 seconds... Diamond skin with Indigo and Evocation skill means that when you find that level 7 indigo rune your never out of diamond skin because the cooldown is cut to 20 seconds but duration is 21 seconds, that said I don't see myself dodging very much to need teleport, while I can still get slow time from Archon if I wanted.
If Arcane Torrent with crimson rune doesn't critical hit, it is 398.2 damage on the second strike but if it does and critical is only double damage then it is a max of 796.4 damage at mana cost of 20 AP but Blizzard costs 45 mana, to do less than 1/3rd the damage even if it criticals every strike (which it would with Energy armor and precision). You could go glass cannon instead of AstralP and with all that defense stuff probably wouldn't notice a thing. I don't know of any spell that criticals for more than 796.4 damage... that is why I kept Arcane Torrent. If archon sucks, then this would be what I would use but chances are it'll be good and I'll definitely have the mana for it...
With this build or the one before it, it isn't really a don't let anything touch me build it is a Hillary Clinton build, you can touch but nothing substantive will happen. The area between Arcane Torrent and Blizzard might close or a little smaller etc. etc. but AT and RoF when they critical do way more damage than Blizzard ever could, and RoF slows to, the Temporal flux with it might be good and would stack with Arcane Torrent as well....

Replace energy armor with storm armor and with the natural hero AP regen of somewhere around 12? you should be able to spam that forever.
What do you think ?

I could go with this http://us.battle.net/d3/en/calculator/wizard#UkVQjO!eVW!ZZYabb but it depends on how good Arcane torrent but there would be some overlap just depends on the monsters.
Did this one just to get most damage out of RoF since I would be doing it a lot:
