It is the single most important skill on Inferno. I would never have been able to solo Act IV without it, and I believe nobody will (well maybe if they can deck out in sick gear, but I only got 26k dps and 7k hp)
I've used Smokescreen+Preparation since I got them, never leaves my bar. It's the only reason I rerolled Demon Hunter from my lvl 43 Wizard, now I've passed my Wizard and am in Hell ^.^
So now with some good arguments, why would i take smoke screen over vault? vault+caltreps is working fine?
Odd I was considering getting rid of caltrops.
The slow seems to do nothing, and the bind of torturous ground works ok on weak mobs, but barely seems to do anything at all to champions. And I mow down regular mobs like its nothing most of the time.

Still doesn't answer. Why take smoke screen over vault?
it makes you immune when you cast it, enemies stop attacking you, if you have a partner the enemies go back to them, you can run through pools / arcane ect. Vault is really useful and I use it sometimes, but atm I'm on act 1 inferno, and SS with prep is just awesome.

I am not trying to compare vault and smoke screen. You could always use both, but SS is a must.
Blizzard said there would be a diminished effect for stuns and what not on champions and bosses, but that is the understatement of the year. 2 seconds = 0.2 seconds. Smoke screen always give you 3 REAL seconds to do whatever you want: DPS, generate Hatred, get to a better spot, etc...

Vault/Caltrops is competitive till Inferno. After that, you absolutely need SS if you hope to get past any of Act 2. Act 1 is perfectly fine without it, though.

This a thousand times over. I got rid of Caltrops once I hit Hell, grabbed Smoke Screen (yes, I was an idiot who didn't realize the power of it), and will never look back. I simply got to the point where the packs that gave me trouble were slowed so little/for so little time by Caltrops that it became rather pointless.
My 2 DH friends, and all DH's I've seen streaming, are just spamming Smoke Screen non-stop, mobs can't do shit.
Seems like an uber lame tactic, I'm gonna laugh when they put a cooldown on SS.
if a pack can't be kited (most) and SS is nerfed then what do you expect hunters to do?

Smoke Screen breaks CC effects such as stun, freeze, etc. You can SS out of Butcher's hook if he catches you, you can SS out of the AoE, if you SS while mortar is falling you won't receive any damage. SS basically means 3 seconds of invulnerability and drops all threat from monster making them wonder around or hit your pet/follower, giving you time to recover. Also, while invisible you can continue to use your abilities. There are countless use of SS and these were only few of them.
On the other hand what does Vault give? Ability to get away from monsters.

Stack +60 max disc from items and bam! perma god mode for DH haha.
I thought it's only possible to get +30 discipline (cloak, and two crossbows or one bow/crossbow and quiver)...
Cloak + wpn + wpn/quiver
I thought the max was like +15 on an item=, which would only yield +45 max disc.
Idk if it would yield god mode, but with prep it would drastically increase your survivability.
+Disc is by far our best stat.

tank? not play?
Learn to play, or play with a group.
Learn to play? WTF? Its impossible to play at high levels without SS.... DHs don't have any passive defense, and almost no reactive defense. A mob in Hell of Inferno teleports in your face, and you are fucked. You might be able to take 2 hits, and then splat.
Playing with a group is not required champ.

I use tactical advantage. Infinitely better than vault as while SS, I have complete control of where I want to go.

I hit inferno on 5/19/12 and have been messing around in act 1 ever since. Inferno is going to be the place to farm so i'm not rushing it, taking my time, and enjoying the farming. That being said here's what i've been running:
Bola Shot(Thunder Ball), Multishot(Fire at Will), Vault (Tumble), Caltrops(Torturous Ground), Rapid Fire (Web Shot), Preparation (Backup Plan)
It's true that caltrops has significantly diminished return on the actual stun, but the slow is still fairly effective, and against anything but fast type mobs (or standardly fast elites like the dogs or the bats) it's enough to kite nearly indefinitely. Also, if you haven't messed around with Bola Shot Thunder Ball yet, you really should. If you have any decent attack speed, you can spam this on an elite so often that they seem to stay stunned indefinitely. Try it for a NV run and you'll see a chained stun and be impressed.
That being said, this thread has definitely got me thinking about at the very least playing around with SS, but abandoning Vault seems crazy to me...it's been the button to my survival since NM D. Also, SS seems really expensive...I personally don't have the +Disc to back it up, but maybe this is easy to acquire? I'd love to open this up in to a general NV skill set discussion. The best things to run from Mira up to the SK down, and rinse and repeat. Likewise, when I've gotten farther into the act, to run Warden/Butcher runs of. Maybe I should make a separate thread for that though...
Smoke Screen nerfed, but still required.
Lingering fog is also now required.
Did it get nerfed this morning? Cause i played till about 11pm eastern time yesterday, and it did not have a cooldown. If they place a cooldown its really gona F my plans cause its about the only defensive skill the DH gets. Vault is nice, but it gets me away from mobs too late or the mobs catches up anyway.
