I've been using a 720 dps 1hand sword with full barb stats with 1000 life on kill and a pretty good shield for a bit.
Well I just found on the AH an undervalued 753 dps 1hander that has 244 strength and 108 vit that I couldn't pass up.
Both are 1.40 speed.
Will I be stupid giving up my shield for dual wielding? The shield I have is medicore. 755 armor, 1445-1549 block amount, 67 str, no vit, 8% health, 29 resist all, +5% block.
With war cry and impunity rune I have right around 750-800 resists to all. And I'm just starting Act 2.
life on kill doesn't work nearly as well as life on hit. if your only means to get hp back was to kill mobs then you'll probably die before the mobs do. i'd probably stick with the shield until you have enough Life on hit to keep yourself alive then try duel wielding.
if you have revenge(provocation) that works really well when there's atleast 2-3+ mobs but when it's a champion pack or boss you kind of need more then that.
I wonder what happened to the "pretty good" shield from line 1 and why you list a million stats of your "mediocre" shield but not the block chance %. That's like talking about weapons ignoring the dps
Otherwise, the answer to your title question is probably yes. Many people will tell you how well they fare with DW or 2h but they're just overgeared. Even Blizzard stated that we're supposed to be defensive before that point.
Just a little headsup: Today I bought a new weapon for my barb (currently farming siegebreaker@act3) with 900 loh, so i thought "let's give dw a try". So I used my old and new weapon (something around 1500 loh together) and tryed to go to my old farming act2 belial route. I reequipped my shield 5 minutes in, it just aint viable in my opinion. Maybe if you overgear your act really really hard, but if then you're better off with a 2h.
With my shield I didn't die again and cleared everything. Dual-wield sucks imho.
Damn this really bums me out. I've been saving up for either a 30%+ SS or a 900+ DPS LOH weapon and have been leaning toward dual wield.
Can you please also post your attacks per second and defensive stats so I can compare to see how much I will suck if I switch?
For soloing.. forget it. I die in seconds. It's not worth it.
For 4 person group play, it's actually pretty viable. Just spam the cooldowns if you are start tanking and keep running around and you'll live. With dual wield, I don't consider myself a tank anymore even though I have all the defensive cooldowns on my bar. I pop wrath for insane burst damage when needed.
In my opinion for DW to work, you need to have a high attack per second ratio. 1.56 just isn't gonna cut it, try for 2.5-3.0. With high res, very fast attacks, great LoH you should be very tough to take down.
I am going for something similar, difference being I am a monk and have 60% dodge, so it makes it a little easier for me to DW then you ha.
idk what you guys are talking about....I made the switch from sword and board to dual wield and act 2 is very easy to farm, not to mention more enjoyable. I still haven't made much progress in act 3 with either spec though. I have about 1000 resist all and 9000 armor with shout up. I have 700ish LOH between both weapons, not that much, and I have 0 IAS gear.
I still don't know how to feel about this but considering the 1.03 patch is coming soon I think I'm going to just do it. Also Rorinn I was really surprised to see you not take Leap or IP. Do you end up having to run around a lot waiting for FC cooldown?
I've even been considering daggers for that 1.9 attack speed. Maybe that will be good enough?
no I don't run around...maybe occasionally on elite packs. I run in barbarian style. I do think I have fairly good gear though....a good bit of all resist and +armor items. I think the new patch will let me progress to act 3 with either dual wield or a 2h....the shield playstyle is silly.

IMO, once the first major content patch for fixing inferno acts 2-4 happen, this might be a fun game style

No nonsense with chaining iron leap or ignore pain, I run up to things and smack them while they smack me.
