This isn't a flame post or anything - just asking general opinions.
We've been really busy with our studio and now I'm starting to come into some free time that will let me get back to some games. I've followed most of the news thus far for D3 and I'm just curious; any reason to keep playing?
I've played a few HC characters to death - literally. I have a PL100 SC Monk already and could continue to work on PL of my other SC characters, but from what I've read, not too much is going to transfer over beyond the first 100 or so you have.
Since most gear is going to be worthless potentially - any reason to play?
Well I was hoping to not start this question with the tone of "its pointless to play"
I was more curious as to any news or developements that I hadn't read that perhaps laid out a few details of RoS that might be worth prepping for.
Specifically - Paragon Levels. I could have swore that I read that beyond the first 100 Paragon Levels, the Devs were going to drastically reduce how many more levels got transferred over as points. So in essence, getting all your characters to 100 wasn't really worth it.
Hunting for loot right now also on the surface seemed to me to not be a good idea - only because of ladders and what gold will be valued for.
@Bagstone - if so many people are playing right now (which I believe you) than that's why I asked the question - what are they doing and what might be something good to do for prep of RoS?
Wasn't aware that another thread had started about this 3 weeks ago - as I said, we've been busy
Also - sure its fun to play no doubt. However there are some other games I want to check out and figured I'd try and find out if there was anything I was missing about D3 and prep for RoS.
As far as I've read of the updates and expansion news, it just seems to me that the direction the game is going in places more onus on the individual player to decide what they want to get out of the game. Whether it's loot, levels, character progression, build experimentation, or simply glory or bragging rights on any of those fronts.
So Polrayne, I guess it really depends on what you want out of it, going forward.
My goal, right now, is to grind Paragon XP to raise my Paragon Level nicely so my characters each have a good amount of points to spend when the updates come. Not going crazy about it, but a little bit each night works fine. Seems like the best use of my time playing the game right now.
But like you said, there's other games you want to work on, I'm with you there. I just finished GTA 5's story mode, that was awesome. I restarted Red Dead Redemption. I have Beyond: Two Souls waiting in the wings, as well as Assassin's Creed Brotherhood and Revelations and Black Ops. So yeah, I have games on my plate that need attention, so this seems like a good time to work on them and go a bit easier on Diablo.
However there are some other games I want to check out and figured I'd try and find out if there was anything I was missing about D3 and prep for RoS.
Which other games? You don't happen to have Forced in mind? See this thread I created recently in a more hidden part on these forums. Just bought it, gonna try it later tonight.
Well, I'd say, I'd wait after Blizzcon to see what's exactly going to happen with this game. If what I see is really game changing, then, I'd probably spend some time leveling my WD to 100.
Hmm Forced looks like it might fun - I'll look into it a bit further. I was going to try and stay away from any ARPG to save up the interest for RoS. Not sure about Terraria...
I was actually going to try and pretend that I have the mental agility and finger speed of an Asian gamer and start playing a little SC2 again. I bought Castlevania: Lords of Shadow recently and didn't give it a go because my boss at work (my wife) barked something that sounded like "VIDEO GAMES" and the word: "NO!"
Meh. There is no reason to grind. In fact don't. Grinding the game will only making it stale and boring. If you want to get some paragon levels then maybe an hour or so each night will do. I find it impossible to play for more then an hour with the game in it's current state.
If you need any reason other than "because it's fun", you're taking it too seriously.
Maybe he's looking for a "long term" reason...
It's always awesome to have some mindless fun, but I think we all love some permanence in our games... OP probably just wants to know whether there's anything other than Paragon experience that's worth farming, based on the most recent news.
But getting to a good gear level will give you a headstart at farming once RoS hits, of that I'm sure. If you're at 50k DPS and MP1 gear lvl, you will probably not be able to get to RoS' end-game (loot runs, adventure mode, whatever) as quickly as those 500k DPS guys
I wish I could tell you "go do at least 90% of the achievements, whoever does that will get a special 'flaming dye' once RoS comes", or "farm as many Legendaries as you can, because they will already be unlocked for Transmog once RoS hits", but alas we don't have any info like that

Definitely do not farm legendaries for transmog. From the front page:
Legacy items (items that drop before [the expansion/pre-expansion patch] goes live) will not unlock unique item appearance, but they can be Transmogrified.

Edit - adding the above statement.
I don't think you ever did the math. Levels do not transfer. They never said that. Its experience that transfers. Experience in this game like many ARPG or RPGs in general have exponential growth. IE if you farmed 80 million xp in one run and you were Para 0 you can be para 5 in that same run. But the moment you hit para70 for every run you do you'll only gain 5 stacks of xp. When you hit para90 it is about 10 times more tedious to get xp versus at para30.
If you actually do that math If you have 10 x 100 paragons your actual level for para 2.0 would be 150 - 200.
Maybe the "we don't have any info like that" sounded a bit off - as in "we don't have any info about that".
I just meant that there isn't any real news that would make currently grinding the game have a long term impact (or benefit) on RoS, as the OP thought there could be. Not that there is no info about anything
Blizzcon is around the corner, let see what are they going to do.
I just don't want more: "we are talking about blabla" or "we are working on blabla". Stahp. I wan't: "when loot 2.0/RoS/etc hits, these will be changes:".
Eeeeeeverything not posted in an official blog by Blizzard is just speculation based. Note everything that even Blizzard employees post are all in the lines of "plan to," "intended for," "in the works," "meant to be," etc. Nothing is concrete. Including:
If you actually do that math If you have 10 x 100 paragons your actual level for para 2.0 would be 150 - 200.
And all the datamined info. Anything to do with Loot 2.0, Paragon 2.0, ladder, anything not mentioned in the recent Mystic post, so on and so forth.
So right now, play based on what's confirmed and not what's being assumed. Why hoard DEs when all we know so far is that they're being used for the current level 63 crafts? Do you think level 70 crafts (if any) will use DEs or will there be other mats? Craft your current gear and play with them. Go level your characters knowing that Paragon 2.0 will be based on account-wide EXP. Useless gear? Perhaps? We know the mystic can reroll stats up to your level, for instance if you get your character to 70 you can get your level 70 stats. Probably won't be as great as nice in-game level 70 drops, but they won't be total garbage. After all, you have to farm with something going into RoS, right?
Maybe? Perhaps? Just play the game and as new confirmed info and answers come up, adapt to them. It's a game.
- Waiting to hop on my flight to BlizzCon
- Leveling alternate characters, long overdue: I have 2x paragon 100 wizards, 1x paragon 80 monk, 1x paragon 60 WD, a garbage DH and barb; will finish monk and WD first
- Will level my 3rd wizard (male) to 100 at some point after BlizzCon, will also reroll yet another female wizard and level her to 100
- Will finish DH and barb to 100 afterward
- Keep crafting items as DEs become available; mostly int gloves and dex gear for now
- Do more video work; planning on doing a joint wizard tribute before the expansion's release with fellow MVP PieHole1628, an all-classes popular builds tribute video, more wacky wizard build videos (with the same taste of my Ninja Wizard videos), and whatever else comes to mind
- Hang on Mumble with other players, you know, the whole socializing aspect of the game
- After getting at least 5x characters to 100, going to build gear sets based on what I find in-game (already working on a puny self-found Archon set to give away)
- Ubers when people request me to help
- Facilitate trades when people request for help
...And most importantly, just play the game because it's a game and I want to play a game.
Thanks for the responses. I think we can all agree that this is a game and its fun to play - I was just curious if anything had been discovered or discussed that was something valuable to do and give players more of a reason to play rather than just for the fun.
It sounds like its a catch all of what you find enjoyable out of your Diablo 3 experience. Until at least Blizzcon.....

Seeing that said thread was later locked, I doubt this is going into a better direction.
TL;DR: Many people are playing more than ever, even if it's just leveling up paragon to have a head start when paragon 2.0 hits.

Or the new Civ xpac.
