I thought this was cool and worth sharing since many have been complaining about the color palette since the game was announced.
This is a reliable source, so there is no danger in trying this for the beta.
I was browsing the Diablo III Forums when I found this Direct 3D filter that does a pretty good job at fixing some of the chief complaints against Diablo III's graphics style. Tired of the 'muddy' textures and lack of detail? How about the 'cartoony' colors and style?
Well there are currently 11 flavors of filter options you can use to get the grittier Diablo III you've been dreaming of. Personally I like to take it all the way to the Hardcore, but if you want to keep more of the colors or eliminate the sharpness, there are options for you as well.
The best thing about this filter is it is not a mod, and therefore doesn't violate any user agreements. See the video below, as well as all of the download links and full instructions after the break
-Stronger effect (tones down all the bright "washed out citrus like colors" (bright blue, yellow, green colors) while keeping the same saturation level as the normal effect):
2. Extract the contents into the root directory of your Diablo 3 install.
3. Start the game and turn off/on the effect using the Pause key on your keyboard.
4. If it doesn't work read the current issues list at top.
Credit: I take no credit for the actual coding and creation of the DLL file and shader filters, I based this on this mod for skyrim: http://www.skyrimnex...file.php?id=131
The only thing I did was tweak the filter settings to match what you see in the video.
The modified graphics do look alot cooler but it looks to be a real pain in the ass to make them happen with the zip files. Would be very nice if we could just play with the settings in the game and make those graphics.
Ugh. That's looks way too grainy and pale for my tastes. I for one, like using all the colors in the spectrum the way D3 was meant to be played =)
course if you like the change nothing is stopping you from using the filter or just turning down your gamma, but please don't try to get Blizzard to change their stance now. MOST people actually like the look of D3, and I'd rather them not waste development time on something you can do on your side.
I never saw the problem with the art style of Diablo 3. D2 wasn't all that bland and dark the whole time, so I don't know why people complain at D3 being bright and 'cartoony'. But this isn't really the right place to discuss that
I watched the video and compared various screenshots and even though I don't think there's a problem with D3's look and style, some areas do look pretty cool with the filter on. Saying that though, some areas also look more bland, washed out and lack detail with the filter on too.
I'll be playing the game through without using the filter so I can see it as Blizzard intended at first, but I'd certainly be tempted to play around with the filters in future.
It's actually pretty funny, because when D2 came out all people could yell about was the bright colors and that it wasn't as dark as D1. It's funny how people forget =D
TBH that screenshot example looks really bad. Even Diablo 2 wasn't as colorless as that... I think the only thing that needs to be done with current Diablo 3 is get rid of the post processing that blurs everything out. It'll give a sharper look atleast. This same post processing effect is also in WoW and it adds AA but because it does blur things a bit.

There are 11 different "settings" to choose from, personally i like the original blizzard look.
Just as a heads up, I use the filter myself in Beta. The darker it gets, the more impossible it is to play. Some of the dungeons are actually already very dark on the screen and if you darken it it makes it hard to see any detail or your character. The sharpening works best with very very minimal darkening.

I really disagree with the people who are calling the look of the game 'cartoony'. It's a very painterly style, and I love it! Messing with the filters just makes the artists cry :(.
I'm such a huge fan of Diablo 3's art direction. It's painterly, yes, but it's also subtle, the colours are often quite muted, and it's fantastic for conveying atmosphere beyond generic 'dark', which is how that filter makes all areas in the game look.
I had seen this on the D3 forums quite a while back too, when Pyloneer/Axecutioner posted it. I thought the screenshots he posted were a little too colourless though. I'm not a big fan of the current look of D3 though. It's not that I don't like the fact that it has colour, I just find too many areas are glowing with green/blue/etc.. Yes Diablo II had colour, but when you went somewhere like, let’s say the cathedral, the whole place wasn't drowned out by blue or green tones everywhere. It’s just very unnatural colours for lighting and I personally hate it. I haven’t looked at all the configurations you posted, but hopefully one of them will be what I’m looking for. Otherwise, I’m sure I can find something that will work for me.

I actually cant even play the game without the increased sharpness now. The normal game is almost blurry.

I stumbled across this after watching different beta videos on youtube. Now I have no issue with how the game looks in the first place, I think it looks great. However, I am of the opinion that it does add that darker more "gothic" diablo feel. Thus I thought it might be nice for gamers to choose which to play with, whether it be one of the different presets available or just the way it is normally. It even gives you the option to make it darker in outside areas and lighter in dungeons and underground areas if you so choose. Also you might notice that the sharpness is increased as well with this, and in my opinion makes the games look incredibly more detailed. What do you guys think? Would you use this, or want the option to, and should blizzard allow its use when the game releases? My personal vote is on yes :).
I have added a video link showing "just one" preset available in action compared to the normal look, as well as the sites link showing the different presets available, the site also lets view the difference between the sharpness on and off (also if you just want the added sharpness and want to play without making it darker you can do that as well):

The filter makes the game look way better imo, makes everything less blurry aswell.
Well I'd be inclined to agree with you, I don't see why they would not allow it, but I mean they did make the game that way because that's how they wanted it, : /, but yeah I suppose you're right would be greedy and selfish of them.

How would it be greedy and selfish of them? You're licensing the game - it's greedy and selfish of you to want to tailor the game to your needs and wants. It's their product - not yours.

Now just need beta access so I can see this in action
You guys think there's a chance that this is implemented by Blizzard so that we don't have to do this for the retail version?

I think it makes the game look terrible, personally
