He's not saying your argument is less valid because of your vocabulary. He's saying that for being machanima, they are, in his opinion, of a good quality.
You know, the same thing kind of happened with Team Fortress 2 for each of the playable classes. And the devoted fans went out and created their own 'meet the....' videos before Valve could release the official ones themselves!
So do we have any talented video editors out there that would like to make their own take on the barbarian or witch doctor trailers?
They made a pair of little machinima trailers to show off two classes and you boycott them because of that? Would it have been better if they didn't make one in the first place?
Yes, just skip to the gameplay vids. This is bad press for those who encounter these vids and aren't intimately following every step of development.
You can't expect every little video they make, videos for people following a game that won't be released in 2 years, to have actual renders that costs tens of thousands of dollars to produce.
They're taking YEARS to make this game, I expect them to put out a little effort to keep marketing and promoting it, so people don't lose interest. After the 2009 Blizzcon interest in D3 dropped off in a big way.
Blizzard happens to be one of the few companies that actually take time to make things like this that aren't meant for publicity or profit, but for entertaining us.
Not for publicity or profit? You think publicly releasing game trailers aren't intended to increase game sales? They are, and no, these videos are globally available to anyone, not just hardcore fans.
The trailers are like their april fool's jokes; they make no profit out of them whatsoever, it is a gift for us. If you don't want the gift, fine, but don't whine about it as if it was actual game content, or something meant to show off the game.
Here's the bottom line: These videos ARE meant for promotion and marketing, why do you think they HAVE Blizzcon? Why do you think these videos are posted on youtube with hundreds of thousands of views? And there are tons of people PUBLICLY dogging the graphics pretty mercilessly, and I don't blame them. If you're trying to say these videos aren't used for marketing and promotion, well, you're wrong.
Blizzcon is an internationally televised promotional event. Its content is distributed ALL OVER the internet. April fool's joke? I wish. They were dead serious when they made that video and I fully maintain that it looks god-awful and is bad press.

Actually, the way those videos are made they simply show a bit of the character's feeling for the game. The monk being the calm dude killing things after being attacked, the wizard entering the dungeon to find some arcane secrets and the demon hunter hunting demons and recruiting. That's how those classes will feel. It's part of their background.
As for the videos themselves, they're made in the game engine so they can't be spectacular in looks, but they're definitely very good at what they are.
I'd have to agree with you both on this one.
Ophion makes some solid points with they are good quality for what they are, however, Dolaiim in the end is right. Anything released by Blizzard is part of their marketing campaign, whether they be free gifts or videos released on youtube. It is all part of building product awareness to the massess. Viral videos are reaching one of the number one forms of marketing, due to the increased time people spend on the internet and the invention of tivo/dvr.
Ophion - Would it be fair to say that a majority of people that play computer games and a percentage of console gamers have heard of Blizzard or Blizzcon? Imagine you were a die-hard WOW fanatic and saw these videos. What would your reaction be? - What crappy graphics - I'm assuming. I think that is the point that Dalaiim is trying to make.
I personally love the videos, not because of the graphics, but because it's a glimpse at what we have all been waiting for for far to long!
Ophion - Can you link some good machinima videos? I have never heard of it prior to this post.

I have forgotten more then you will ever remember. Do you have change for a nickel? I need three pennies.
You do make some very solid points Ophion, I'll give you that. I do stand by my take on it, but in the end, Blizzard hasn't really started ramping up their full marketing campaign yet, and of course the actual fully rendered cinematic is pretty amazing. I have no doubt that D3 is going to be flipping great. As a software engineer myself, I have the utmost respect for Blizzard as a developer.
That said, if I were a marketing executive at Blizzard, I would hate machinima. I disagree that everyone know what machinima are, especially the not-so-hardcore market (who, unlike us, are not going to buy the game regardless of advertising). If I were a marketing exec at Blizz a convo with devs would go like this:
Me: Holy shit guys. What was that video, and why are you trying to convince people that our graphics are bad.
Devs: Don't worry, they're machinima, not fully rendered cinematics. They look great for what they are.
Me: Mkay. Still they aren't representative of the quality of this game. People are going to think our graphics are outdated and our dialogue is cheesy.
Devs: Well, it's just for the hardcore fans, to reveal new classes, kick up excitement, and keep them from losing interest.
Me: Kay that's important.. but these vids are all over youtube and they could go massively viral.
Devs: Let's hope they don't.
Me: Yeah, let's hope they don't.
In the grand scheme of things, these videos aren't going to make or break. But on youtube it's about a 50/50 split between excited comments, and people lambasting the poor quality of the videos.

I personally do not pay attention to game trailers and videos that are early or mid development. In my opinion D3 is still in the late parts of mid development. I call late stage when the release date is announced and betas. Then I expect the videos to be getting better. I take the early videos as a glimpse to the development and progress in the making of the game.
I think many people are making buying decisions by looking at the early videos of a game that are 2 or more years from release.

On Strike and supporting Fallout 4 Mod Makers
Some fallout 4 mod makers have had their mods stolen and uploaded and downloaded on Bethesda's site for the Xbox One.
I think many people are making buying decisions by looking at the early videos of a game that are 2 or more years from release.
Did you mean "I don't think many people are making buying decisions..." ?
I don't know if they are or not.. but what I would be afraid of as a Blizzard employee is alienating potential customers with content that misrepresents the potential quality of the game.. that's my whole beef really, is that, as "good" (relative to other machinima) as these videos may be.. In 2010, with the kind of shock and awe you see in video game marketing these days, these videos just don't stand up. As an end user who stumbles upon trailers for this game and doesn't have a clue about the current stage of development, I would think "Damn, this looks terrible." Many many people have said as much on youtube and other sites. First impressions are extremely important, and are difficult if not impossible to undo.
Not sure why I care.. maybe I love Bliz so much that I want them to make enough money so they can keep making the best games in the world. Or, maybe I'm just a complainy twat. There's evidence supporting both.

Why do I get the feeling all the people who say they want to see barbarian and WD trailers just want to see something, not nescesarily that. If anything, it's really a sign of how tired we all are of waiting for the game with so little news to keep us hanging in there all the time.
We'd probably be better off just asking for them to show us something actually new to us.
i think that's more like it for the majority. but for some people, we just love watching those vids anyway!
now on how it would alienate the potential customers, i don't think there's much of a chance for that. most people that won't go buy the game anyway (like the majority of the forum here for example) will just wait to see how the game does from magazine reviews.
I wish I could say that something doesn't matter without getting my head bit off.
Really, I don't think we need a trailer for either class. They've had plenty of coverage over the past couple years. In fact, I would consider the 08' gameplay video to be the trailers, although there weren't any cinematic elements.
Edit: I'd rather get something new than something that doesn't give us any new info.
"But, but Azriel, they're different teams and stuff."
That's beside the point. Don't you think that the teams already have enough to do? Have you not seen how extensive the production for this game is? They've been developing for well over three years what a shitty company like EA can push out in a year. Paying attention to every little detail, making sure that it lives up to our expectations, and you want them to backtrack and make a couple videos simply because there's a lack of them?
All I'm trying to say is that you should leave them to their job and be happy with what you have. Until we get new info, I'm looking at Elder Scrolls news. We haven't gotten any good info in well over two weeks, it's been stale speculation and it's boring (and, no offense, but this thread is a good example of that).

You made me realize what I truly wanted.
Cookies...and sex with Zhar of course.
Less seriously, I have no desire to see the char trailers like in the near future. I want them to be in the game as some sort of intro cinematic for each char right after the main story cinematic and just before gameplay. So it's nothing to do about just wanting to these to pass the time for now.
My wait for D3 ended with last blizzcon, so am pretty cool about whatever time they want to take.
Something I just remembered. I think all the classes will have a sort of class-specific introductory phase for the character in the beginning where their background is told. I think it was said either during some panel or some interview during this year's BlizzCon.
That will probably tell all you need to know about the two classes that don't have their own video (Barbarian and Witch Doctor).
Ola! I never knew of this bit of news(you sure about this, right?).
That should solve it if this is confirmed. I mean we'll see the other 'trailers/intros' when we get the game.
Good enough for me.

Then you admit they don't look awesome. Apparently they're supposed to look like amateur fan videos made in 2005. And you're right, they do.
