One thing we do have that Diablo II didn't have is weapon effects, which was really more of a technical limitation back then.
It's seem to be a very great news. I just don't know what it's could be ?
Idea :
staff = fastest block and return projectiles (skill already do that so I'm not sure)
sword = open wound
2 handed = open wound + knockback
spear/bow = bleeding + critical hit
hammer/mace = stun
Big maul = stun + knockback
dagger = fast attack + more chance to critical hit
.....
How are the suggestions you posted different from the effects items could have in d2? I think "weapon effects" in this case means something completely different since Jay said that d2 didn't include "weapon effects" at all due to limitations.
I really have no clear idea of what he means,, I mean it must be something quite extensive since it couldn't be implemented in d2.
I think he meant stuff like axes beheading people, and swords piercing an enemy's heart and such... Different animations depending on the type of weapon, whereas in Diablo 2 no matter if you were wearing a sword or axe you always fought the same way with it.
Makes more sense in the context he was talking about it (that is, how your gear would look like).
That makes alot of sense, although his answer doesn't really point us in the death animation/killing blow direction. Any other suggestions?
Ohhh do you think "weapon effect" are only animation ??? eurk... I'm disapointed.
I think it's normal to have a different animation for each TYPE of weapon (not each unique weapon) only categories like : sword, lance/spear, mace, axe...
all sword will have the same animation, if not I think blizzard waste him times.
Oh i thought he meant stuff like the Lightning axe, glowing sword and so...
I don't think so, because Jay said, something that d2 haven't and in d2 when you put a gem in an item, the item change color... (glowing and animation on weapon it's seem for me the same thing as a changed color)
Or those really crappy fireworks that give out sparks at the tip..
Sparklers?
I like the effects we saw in the first video but some weapons with a feint glow would be nice too. The wider the variety of effects, the better as long as they are all used sparingly. It would be kind of annoying if every magical/rare item with fire damage looked like it was on fire. Maybe limit it to uniques, rares and socketed items and mix up the effect and intensity of them.
For example, maybe have some fire weapons glow slightly red, some glow bright, some one fire, some with occasional sparks, some that look like they have fiery cracks and many with no visible effect.
I really believe at this point it's really only as Don_Quillotine described it.. Like swords glowing red or graphical stuff like that.
Alltho, "stuff like axes beheading people, and swords piercing an enemy's heart and such... Different animations depending on the type of weapon" sounds pretty damn awesome!
ONLY graphical stuff
But I like the idea of a "finishing move" for each type of weapon, it's can be triggered by a critical ?!
I'm pretty sure weapon effects pertains to the fact that the effect ON the weapons will be different. If you look at the barb's weapons in the first gameplay video, you see a lightning axe, cold axe with frost on it, and the flaming hammer.
I like weapon effects. Cool ones. I think it would be cool if your weapon was cold enchanted, given it had enough cold damage to it, could freeze water and create walk ways. Into secret areas, or for convenience.
I was just going to say glowing isn't the same as changing the base color of the item..... Fuck it, I'm still going to say it anyway
lol, it's the same thing if you consider that the magics effects on weapon make a difference in the look of it.

So it's not new... every new game in that kind having that... and although d2, blue gem color your weapon blue, red in red.... I don't see why Blizzard will won't put an animation on magics weapons???? So why it's a new ?

This thread is about the weapon effects, which are definitely the elements pulsing through the weapons.
Definitely ?? you're sure... I don't see where it's clearly said.

Your quotes are messed up a bit
Okay, if he meant it like that, sure. For a 3D game the code involved is likely very much the same, just an animated clip of a glow around the weapon (with a code that stretches it to match the weapons shape) instead of a static alpha shading.
But in a 2D game like D2 I can imagine that the glow would have been much harder to pull off, not to mention look alot less convincing and more out of place.
Yes I know, 3D is easier to implement that than 2D...

Well it's more about the fact that D2 was made a decade ago, adding weapon effects without them looking odd is probably much easier than it was back in the late 90's when the D2 was being developed.

Yes AND it's easier with 3D...
With 2D you need to have each unique animation, in 3D, depending of what is the logicial you use (if it's 3D studio max) you have particles generators that can almost do all the job for this kind of thing, like blood, fire and weapon effects indeed.

Ahh, I thought you were disagreeing and being sarcastic with the previous comment for some reason.

Omfg Dingler I hope you don't actually look like that in real life. I'm gonna have nightmares now.
lmao... and he hasnt posted on this tread since. >.>
Im glad to see that they are having weapon effects in the game. I cant stress enough however IMO that there is no such thing as too much weapon effects for end game equiptment.

Battle not with monsters lest you become one.
Then make a different thread about it.

I think he was referring to it in terms of the programming required.

Do you really had doubt about that ?????
I never care about that... do you really think that blizzard will not going to have weapon effects when any previous similars games all having that.
