In the official trailer we see at 1:27 (I tried getting a screen shot of it but it came up black in every copy... any help?) we see a Lord of the Rings style army marching or going to war...
My question is: Should we expect to see or be a part of such battles?
It's probably been discussed or explained somewhere why the huge army is marching. If it has please point me in the right direction otherwise please discuss!
I think it would be a nice feature to have rare wars where you call your friends in to help you out. You fight along side *your allied army* and kill a shit ton of bad guys. Difficulty would be scaled by your level and players in game.
I dont know.. maybe it wouldn't fit in with the game? I've never read any of the books i'm just a really big and lazy fan hehe.

It is not sure if this actually means something. It's a trailer, and basicly the only thing it does is describing the story a bit just enough to get the attention from viewers. And I assume this marching army is just there to show the viewers that the monsters are coming from hell, and that there will be fighting all over Sanctuary.
I don't really think players will be in such a large fight. They said we were going to fight larger amounts of monsters, but not that big.
You won't see 2 full scale armies going at each other in the game, your hero is there to hunt down big bosses, not to fight in an army. Altho there is an open warfare going on in the story line, you won't be appart of it for the most part.

actually this could be really cool. If there was a war and your character couldn't survive, I guess it would mean that you simply didn't level up your characer enough at that point. The fast paced and really hecktic nature of people at war fighting eachother every square inch of the screen sounds cool. Especially if you had responsabilities of holding your fort/ keeping the city from being overrun.
If you happened to have leveled your character really high, there could be some bad ass pwnage going on which would be a prime time to show off to your friends how powerful you have become... or enter the party saving the day.
Considering this game usually has to be able to be played individually, perhaps it could still be done but it would force you to level your character all the much much more to be prepared for battle all by yourself. But if you are in a party, you all could be slightly underleveled and everybody could have a blast coordinating what people are doing to stay in the fight!!!!!!

How are you so sure of that?
I actually think that we will take some kind of a part in this big war, it will be special and unique. Its something we havent seen before... And our hero is not only designed to hunt down big bosses as you said... It is designed to fight 100 small monsters together too.
Do remember act 5 in the diablo expansion? It could be sortof like that only times a thousand.
You of course would be the deciding factor in the outcome of the war because you are the hero and
i guess you'd assume the army of yours would be way too incompetent to save themsleves otherwise.

I'm sure because it was like that in diablo 1 and diablo 2 and so should be diablo 3.
And also how the hell do you want them to make a full scale battle the way a diablo game looks, just to find yourself on the battlefield with the zoomed in view would be impossible, and that's without talking about the orientation and the time it would take just to get one side of the battlefield to the other.
I'm not saying it wouldn't be fun, i'm saying it wouldn't work with how the game works.
ummm, i was under the impression we were fighting against the armies of evil in diablo 3? i mean... thats how it was in d1 and d2? or are you talking about like a huge ass field of just button mashing and killing? which would be fun and you could do i guess "waves" and get progressively harder. either way this game is going to be fun as hell.
Theres alot of new stuff they can do in D3 to inovate in the genre...
Large scale battles are sure one of then.
Really, they will surely make lot of new stuff in terms of level design. And i agree with that guy of the cute avatar... D1 dungeons > D2 dungeosn, no doubt.
Would be cool to have an in-game event like "Battle for Mt. Arreat" where you'd be one of the human soldiers in an army fightning against the armies of demons. There would be a score table showing score of each character in that particular game plus in addition highest scores would be registered into a world wide ranking list. Just like ladder in D2 but it wouldnt be scoring levels but how much demon heads you had ripped off in the battle for Mt. Arreat. \o/
nothing but it was in relation to this post that the topic has lead into?
Instead, I stand here looking at a mountain that has been torn asunder by some extraordinary force. The sight, I must confess, is incomprehensible. Yet what I see before me cannot be denied.
What truly happened here? Where are those majestic warriors of old?
taking out of the barbarian character excerpt.

um it was never comfirmed yet what exactly happened there yet though
or did i miss some sort of announcement xD
but that certainly is one theory =3
but if that is the case then chances are the hero that defeated baal whatever class that may be is probaly dead xD
so i kinda doubt thats what happened exactly =3
baal died, tyreal came and ported them out, and then chucked his sword into the worldstone shattering it. im getting annoyed with people who come here make statements and never played the friggen video game.

id like it if every act were more like act 5 was in D2
it would be more fun to get the dungeon crawling from diablo 1
but the outdoor adventure fighting from D2 =3
i think the dungeons were designed better in D1 than in D2
but D2 had a few cool visuals that D1 didnt have
"andariels big swimming pool of dead rogues lol"
"mephistos moat and bone bridge"
"baal's war xD"
just in D1 the dungeons looked more like dungeons lol
id actually like to see a hell in diablo 3 with a mix of D1 and D2 ideas
i also think the catacombs were just downright better in D1
but d2 pretty much crushed it on all the other dungeons lol
still both games had nice designs =3
i also dont see why they wouldnt have you fight in a huge war like that lol
diablo is pretty much about how the sin war never ended
wouldnt that be what it would be if hell did find the gate to heaven lol =3

Soooo... you're guessing.
